Publikacja stanowi socjologiczne spojrzenie na problematykę zagrożenia zachowaniami korupcyjnymi w instytucjach państwowych na przykładzie Służby Celnej RP. Istotą pracy jest przyjęcie możliwie szerokiej, wielopłaszczyznowej perspektywy na problem ryzyka korupcyjnego, w której zawierają się organizacyjne, podmiotowe oraz kulturowe uwarunkowania tego złożonego zjawiska społecznego. Between the stage and the text : agency and structure in the analysis of cultural change from the perspectives of trust and uncertainty

Publikacja stanowi interdyscyplinarny projekt łączący w sobie teorie kulturoznawcze, socjologiczne, politologiczne i filozoficzne oraz zmierzający do przedstawienia dynamiki zmian społeczno-kulturowych z punktu widzenia zaufania i niepewności. Przyjmując tezę, że zaufanie jest sposobem na radzenie sobie z niepewną i ryzykowną przyszłością, praca ta opiera się na założeniu, że omawiane pojęcia służą zobrazowaniu stopnia zadomowienia się jednostki w zmieniających się strukturach i systemach społecznych, ekonomicznych i kulturowych. W ten sposób niniejsza publikacja wychodzi poza ramy tych teorii modernizacji, które zmianę społeczną przedstawiają przede wszystkim z perspektywy strukturalno-systemowej, uwzględniającej przemiany instytucji politycznych, administracyjnych (struktur biurokratycznych) lub ekonomicznych. Between Architecture and Cultural Studies : reflections on the Constitution and Devaluation of Urban Public Spaces

This interdisciplinary paper aims to outline the role of architecture in the societal construction and devaluation of civic public spaces from the perspectives of theoretical architecture, cultural studies, and theory of culture. When perceived in the context of the agency/structure duality, urban public spaces could be seen as societal constructs whose character and identity can be traced to the holistic organisation of architectural forms within a given locale. At the same time, the deflation in the quality of public spaces may be explained by making references to mutually reinforcing processes of spatial commodification and symbolic violence which are both exercised by implanting pure, self-explicable architectural forms into well-entrenched urban spaces

Co-expressed mitochondrial genomes: recently masculinized, recombinant mitochondrial genome is co-expressed with the female – transmitted mtDNA genome in a male Mytilus trossulus mussel from the Baltic Sea

BACKGROUND: Few exceptions have been described from strict maternal inheritance of mitochondrial DNA in animals, including sea mussels (Mytilidae), clams (Donacidae, Veneridae and Solenidae) and freshwater mussels (Unionoidae) order. In these bivalves mitochondria and their DNA are transferred through two separate routes. The females inherit only the maternal mitochondrial DNA whereas the males inherit maternal as well as paternal mitochondrial DNA, which is usually present only in gonads and sperm. The mechanism controlling this phenomenon is unclear but leads to the existence of two separate mitochondrial DNA lineages in a single species. The lineages are usually well differentiated: up to 20-50% divergence in nucleotide sequence. Occasionally, a maternal mitochondrial DNA can invade the paternal transmission route, eventually replacing the diverged M-type and lowering the divergence. Such role reversal (masculinization) event has happened recently in the Mytilus population of the Baltic Sea which consists of M. edulis × M. trossulus hybrids, but the functional status of the resulting mitochondrial genome was unknown. RESULTS: In this paper we sequenced transcripts from one specimen that was identified as male carrying both the female mitochondrial genome and a recently masculinized mitochondrial genome. Additionally, the analysis of the control region has showed that the recently masculinized, recombinant genome, not only has an M-type control region and all coding regions derived from the F-type, but also is transcriptionally active along side the maternally inherited F-type genome. In the comparative analysis, the two genomes exhibit different substitution patterns, typical for the M vs. F genome comparisons. The genetic distances and ratios of non-synonymous substitutions also suggest that one of the genomes is transitioning from the maternal to the paternal inheritance mode, consistent with its recent masculinization. CONCLUSION: We have shown, for the first time, that the recently masculinized mitochondrial genome is active and that it accumulates excess of non-synonymous substitutions across its coding sequence. This suggests, that, under certain cytonuclear incompatibility conditions, masculinization may serve to restore the endangered functionality of the paternally inherited genome. This is also another example of a mitochondrial genome in which the recombination in the control region predated its transition from paternal to maternal transmission route

Zrzucając maski. Refleksje na temat podmiotowości w świetle procesów (bio)medykalizacji

W ramach nauk o kulturze podmiotowość jest postrzegana w kategoriach wybitnie nieesencjonalnych jako swego rodzaju maska, którą jednostka jest zmuszona założyć adekwatnie do zastanych warunków społecznych i kulturowych. Podmiotowość jest konstruktem przypisywanym jednostce przez intersubiektywne struktury i instytucje kultury, w szczególności przez język. W przebiegu afazji mieszanej (afazja ruchowo-czuciowa) chory nie potrafi zrozumieć mowy innych ludzi ani swobodnie wypowiadać się przy użyciu wcześniej przyswojonego kodu językowego. Całkowitemu i często nieodwracalnemu uszkodzeniu ulega zatem ta część (nie)świadomości jednostki, która w rozumieniu części psychologów, a także językoznawców oraz filozofów strukturalnych i poststrukturalnych jest ukształtowana przez doświadczenie posługiwania się językiem, który w tym kontekście jest postrzegany zarówno jako mowa społeczna (tj. metoda komunikowania się), jak i mowa wewnętrzna, czyli medium kształtowania się i rozwoju świadomości (Lew Wygotski) i nieświadomości jednostkowej (Jacques Lacan). Jednak pomimo przeżycia tak skrajnie traumatycznego doświadczenia pacjenci zachowują podmiotowość, co znajduje swój wyraz w poszukiwaniu, często uporczywym i długotrwałym, skutecznych strategii kompensacyjnych mających na celu nabycie nowych umiejętności komunikacyjnych

No evidence of DUI in the Mediterranean alien species Brachidontes pharaonis (P. Fisher, 1870) despite mitochondrial heteroplasmy

Two genetically diferent mitochondrial haplogroups of Brachidontes pharaonis (p-distance 6.8%) have been identifed in the Mediterranean Sea. This hinted at a possible presence of doubly uniparental inheritance in this species. To ascertain this possibility, we sequenced two complete mitogenomes of Brachidontes pharaonis mussels and performed a qPCR analysis to measure the relative mitogenome copy numbers of both mtDNAs. Despite the presence of two very similar regions composed entirely of repetitive sequences in the two haplogroups, no recombination between mitogenomes was detected. In heteroplasmic individuals, both mitogenomes were present in the generative tissues of both sexes, which argues against the presence of doubly uniparental inheritance in this species

Systemic intertextuality : a morphogenetic perspective

If late modern literary production is structured by any principles rendering order to the otherwise nebular character of the process, this is the idea of intertextuality that paves the way for the dissolution of well entrenched structures, literary conventions and institutionalized canons. By fostering and facilitating the erosion of boundaries between elite and popular culture, mechanisms of intertextuality show that literature is not only a fixed collection of texts, but also a dynamic social system including structured practices of production and reception together with their institutional, cultural and technological determinants. The paper aims to provide a sociologically-oriented model of intertextual relations taking place within the social system of literature. In this context, circulation, dissemination, and recycling of literary motifs is viewed from a perspective of morphogenetic processes which result in the structural elaboration and systemic change due to the mobilization of social, cultural, and economic capitals in an effort to alter pre-existent practices of signification. Consequently, literature is discussed as an intertextual system in statu nascendi, a sphere of social practices that knows no sense of institutional boundaries or structural constraints

Między reprodukcją z zmianą systemową : czasopisma literackie w społecznym systemie literatury

The article aims to outline the role of literary periodicals in the social system of literature from a per� spective of processes that take part in the accumulation of both cultural capital and social capital. In this sense, the paper is an attempt to incorporate a sociological perspective into the theory of literature in order to provide a more informed view on social and cultural processes that are mediated by literary periodicals of diversified kind. By referring to the notions of embodied and institutional cultural capital (Pierre Bourdieu) as well as social capital (Robert D. Putnam, Francis Fukuyama), the paper examines the dialectic of system reproduction and morphogenetic change in terms of processes that organize the functioning of literature conceived of a specific kind of social system
