"Oil Mania": Colonial Land Policy, Land Speculation, and Settlement in Enniskillen Township, 1830s-1860s
Geography, plus the economic and social conditions of oil resource extraction,
shaped settlement and land speculation in Enniskillen Township in southwestern
Ontario from the opening of the township to settlement in 1835 through the “oil
boom” of the 1860s. Colonial land policies were intended to encourage settlement by
loyal, industrious British subjects, but did not prevent land speculation. During the
early stages of the development of the oil industry, the activities of land speculators
in the township were part and parcel of the normal workings of capitalism. Land speculation
involved both settlement and improvement of land holdings. An analysis of
settlement and land speculation in Enniskillen Township over this period demonstrates
the continued usefulness of micro-studies in unravelling the nuances of colonial
land-granting policies in Upper Canada.
Some Adventures of the Boys: Enniskillen Township\u27s Foreign Drillers, Imperialism, and Colonial Discourse, 1873-1923
This paper analyses the travel writings composed by the oil drillers from Enniskillen township, in southwestern Ontario, to explain how they went about reinforcing the project of European capitalist imperialism while simultaneously disavowing the agency of native Others. As British subjects and Anglo-Canadians, travel and travel writing helped to define Enniskillen\u27s foreign drillers as both colonizers and colonized. As agents of imperialism Enniskillen drillers became part of an imperial overclass by virtue of their whiteness, Britishness, and technical expertise in the mining and refining of petroleum. The colonial oil fields also became a space for the re-invention of Victorian ideals of domesticity. The wives and children of foreign drillers also travelled abroad with their husbands. In their role as homemakers, women also reinforced imperialism and its hierarchies of race and class.
Defending The Art Preservative : Class and Gender Relations in the Printing Trades Unions, 1850-1914
The essay explores relations of gender and class, and the strategies developed by male unionists in defence of masculine craft status in the International Typographical Union (ITU), the International Printing Pressmen's and Assistants' Union(IPP&AU), and the International Brotherhood of Bookbinders (IBB), between 1850 and 1914.The ITU and IPP&AU organized along masculine craft lines and effectively defended their status within the workplace with industrial capitalist incursions and the mechanization of the production process. A crisis to male domination of typesetting occurred with the introduction of machine typesetting in newspaper production during the early 1890s. The ITU succeeded in securing control over the operations of the machines for its predominately male membership. By the mid-19th century the work of press feeder was defined as unskilled work suitable for women and boys. With the introduction of larger and faster presses during the last two decades of the 19th century, the IPP&AU struggled to appropriate the task for masculinity using the male breadwinner ideal.
Why the Flapper Still Matters: Feminist Pedagogy, the Modern Girl, and the Women Artists of the Beaver Hall Group
The flapper of the 1920s, with her bobbed hair, use of makeup, flashy dress, independent, flamboyant behaviour and eroticism, and love of dancing and jazz music, signified a new form of femininity, one where women were simultaneously modern objects and subjects. This article examines the flapper as a historical, historiographical, and pedagogical problem and addresses the question of why the flapper matters historically and why she should continue to matter to university teachers and researchers. The article dissects the learning experiences of a group of students who toured the 2016 exhibition of the modern art of Montreal’s Beaver Hall Group in conjunction with a fourth-year seminar on the Modern Girl. Students explored a new and diverse visual economy based on a strong, independent, and assertive Canadian feminine modernity, and discovered that images of women could be empowering. I argue that the flapper challenges masculine traditions by encouraging historians to consider changeable feminine bodies and identities, thus breaking down longstanding binaries in Canadian history and historical writing. The flapper points to the use of the historical material in the everyday world. This confluence of women’s history and visual culture suggests why the flapper still matters today.
Retention prediction in RP-HPLC
A method of calculating the RP-HPLC retention indices,
based on the alkylarylketone scale, has been developed. The
retention indices are calculated from the molecular
structure of a compound as the sum of the parent
contribution, the parent index, the substituent
contributions, the substituent indices, and terms to account
for the interactions between substituents, the interaction
indices. [Continues.

Fabrication of Myogenic Engineered Tissue Constructs
Despite the fact that electronic pacemakers are life-saving medical devices, their long-term performance in pediatric patients can be problematic owing to the restrictions imposed by a child's small size and their inevitable growth. Consequently, there is a genuine need for innovative therapies designed specifically for pediatric patients with cardiac rhythm disorders. We propose that a conductive biological alternative consisting of a collagen-based matrix containing autologously-derived cells could better adapt to growth, reduce the need for recurrent surgeries, and greatly improve the quality of life for these patients. In the present study, we describe a procedure for incorporating primary skeletal myoblast cell cultures within a hydrogel matrix to fashion a surgically-implantable tissue construct that will serve as an electrical conduit between the upper and lower chambers of the heart. Ultimately, we anticipate using this type of engineered tissue to restore atrioventricular electrical conduction in children with complete heart block. In view of that, we isolate myoblasts from the skeletal muscles of neonatal Lewis rats and plate them onto laminin-coated tissue culture dishes using a modified version of established protocols[]. After one to two days, cultured cells are collected and mixed with antibiotics, type 1 collagen, Matrigel, and NaHCO. The result is a viscous, uniform solution that can be cast into a mold of nearly any shape and size[]. For our tissue constructs, we employ type 1 collagen isolated from fetal lamb skin using standard procedures[]. Once the tissue has solidified at 37C, culture media is carefully added to the plate until the construct is submerged. The engineered tissue is then allowed to further condense through dehydration for 2 more days, at which point it is ready for assessment or surgical-implantation
