ANISAP: A three-dimensional finite element program for laminated composites subjected to mechanical loading
ANISAP is a 3-D finite element FORTRAN 77 computer code for linear elastic, small strain, analysis of laminated composites with arbitrary geometry including free edges and holes. Individual layers may be isotropic or transversely isotropic in material principal coordinates; individual layers may be rotated off-axis about a global z-axis. The laminate may be a hybrid. Three different isoparametric elements, variable order of gaussian integration, calculation of stresses at element boundaries, and loading by either nodal displacement of forces are included in the program capability. Post processing capability includes failure analysis using the tensor polynominal failure criterion
Instrumentation for Measurement of Gas Permeability of Polymeric Membranes
A mass spectrometric 'Dynamic Delta' method for the measurement of gas permeability of polymeric membranes has been developed. The method is universally applicable for measurement of the permeability of any gas through polymeric membrane materials. The usual large sample size of more than 100 square centimeters required for other methods is not necessary for this new method which requires a size less than one square centimeter. The new method should fulfill requirements and find applicability for industrial materials such as food packaging, contact lenses and other commercial materials where gas permeability or permselectivity properties are important
Comparison of herbage yield, nutritive value and ensilability traits of three ryegrass species evaluated for the Irish Recommended List
peer-reviewedThis study examined 169 of the newest varieties of three ryegrass species, perennial (Lolium perenne L.), Italian (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) and hybrid (Lolium boucheanum Kunth), from Recommended List trials in Ireland. The traits examined were yield, dry matter concentration, three nutritive value traits (in vitro dry matter digestibility, water-soluble carbohydrate on a dry matter basis and crude protein concentration) and two ensilability traits (buffering capacity and water soluble carbohydrate concentration on an aqueous phase basis). Varietal monocultures of each species underwent a six cut combined simulated grazing and silage management in each of two years following sowing. Perennial ryegrass yielded less than both other species in one-year-old swards, but less than only Italian ryegrass in two-year-old swards, but generally had the higher in vitro dry matter digestibility and crude protein values. Italian ryegrass displayed the most favourable ensilability characteristics of the three species with perennial ryegrass less favourable and hybrid ryegrass intermediate. Overall, despite the high yields and favourable nutritive value and ensilability traits recorded, the general differences between the three ryegrass species studied were in line with industry expectations. These findings justify assessing the nutritive value and ensilability of ryegrass species, in addition to yield, to allow farmers select species that match farming enterprise requirements. We acknowledge the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine for funding provided through the Research Stimulus Fund (07 526
An investigation of microstructural characteristics of contact-lens polymers
The free volume and gas permeability in several contact lens specimens were measured as part of a Space Commercialization Program. Free volume was measured using positron lifetime spectroscopy, while permeability for O2, N2, CO2 gases was measured using mass spectrometry and polarography. Permeability for all gases increases with the mean free volume cell size in the test samples. As might be expected, the specimens with the highest free volume fraction also exhibit the lowest Rockwell Hardness Number. An interesting corollary is the finding that the presence of fluorine atoms in the lens chemical structure inhibits filling up of their free volume cells. This is expected to allow the lenses to breathe freely while in actual use
A journey into silence: students, stakeholders and the impact of a strategic Governmental Policy Document in the UK.
For our analysis we draw upon Macherey’s essay ‘The text says what is does not say’ (in Walder 1990) where he argues for the legitimacy of interrogating a text for ‘what it tacitly implies, what it does not say … for in order to say anything there are things which must not be said’ (Ibid 217, his italics). As with society, all works have their margins – the incompleteness that reveals their birth and production … ‘ What is important in the work is what it does not say … what the work cannot say … because there the elaboration of the utterances is acted out in a sort of journey to silence’ (Ibid 218). Our critical analysis of the Government e-learning strategy (2005) reveals that rather than harnessing technology to empower the typically disenfranchised within the educational debate, it is those very stakeholders at the margins who are silenced whilst the interests of those with institutional and economic power are given voice. Our analysis will show that rather than creating a stakeholder society, Government through its policy documents positions the already disempowered as either silent or deficit and our conclusions suggest that rather than a discourse of transformation, ‘regulation not education’ (Lillis 2001), is the real goal of the dominant stakeholders

Enhancing the Sensitivity of SMS Fiber Sensors by the Use of High Refractive Index Coatings
This paper presents a study on the behavior of single-mode/multimode/single-mode sensors with diamond-like carbon coating of high refractive index. Spectra and response for different values of the external medium refractive index are recorded and analyzed
Kinematical cusp and resonance interpretations of the X(2900)
We examine whether the LHCb vector state can be
interpreted as a kinematical cusp effect arising from and interactions. The production amplitude is modelled as a triangle
diagram with hadronic final state interactions. A satisfactory fit to the
Dalitz plot projection is obtained that leverages the singularities of the
production diagram without the need for resonances. A somewhat
better fit is obtained if the final state interactions are strong enough to
generate resonances, although the evidence in favour of this scenario is not
conclusive.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures. Version to appear in Physics Letters
Discriminating among interpretations for the X(2900) states
We make predictions for the production and decays of states, and
their possible charged partners, in and decays, considering a
number of competing models for the states, including triangle diagrams mediated
by quark exchange or pion exchange, and resonance scenarios including molecules
and tetraquarks. Assuming only isospin symmetry and the dominance of
colour-favoured weak decays, we find characteristic differences in the
predictions of the different models. Future experimental studies can therefore
discriminate among the competing interpretations for the states.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures. Version to appear in Phys.Rev.
The effects of donepezil in Alzheimer's disease - Results from a multinational trial
Donepezil has been shown to be well tolerated and to improve cognition and global function in patients with mild to moderately severe Alzheimer's disease (AD). The current trial was undertaken to investigate further the efficacy and safety of donepezil, in a multinational setting, in patients with mild to moderately severe AD. This 30-week, placebo-controlled, parallel-group study consisted of a 24-week, double-blind treatment phase followed by a 6-week, single-blind, placebo washout. Eight hundred and eighteen patients with mild to moderately severe AD were randomly allocated to treatment with single, daily doses of 5 or 10 mg donepezil, or placebo. The two primary efficacy measures were: a cognitive performance test, the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale-cognitive subscale (ADAS-cog) and a global evaluation, the Clinician's Interview-Based Impression of Change with caregiver input (CIBIC plus). Secondary outcome measures included the Sum of the Boxes of the Clinical Dementia Rating Scale (CDR-SB), a modified Interview for Deterioration in Daily living activities in Dementia (IDDD) and a patient-rated quality of life assessment. Statistically significant improvements in cognitive and global function were observed, as evaluated by ADAS-cog and CIBIC plus, respectively, in both the 5 and 10 mg/day donepezil groups, compared with placebo. Treatment-associated changes were also observed in functional skills, as shown by improved scores on the CDR-SB and the complex-tasks component of the IDDD. A dose-response effect was evident, with the 10 mg/day donepezil group demonstrating greater benefits in all outcome measures than the 5 mg/day group. Donepezil was well tolerated by this patient population and did not produce any clinically significant laboratory test abnormalities. The results of this study confirm that donepezil is effective and well tolerated in treating the symptoms of mild to moderately severe AD
Abell 3560, a galaxy cluster at the edge of a major merging event
In this paper we study A3560, a rich cluster at the southern periphery of the
A3558 complex, a chain of interacting clusters in the central part of the
Shapley Concentration supercluster.
From a ROSAT-PSPC map we find that the X-ray surface brightness distribution
of A3560 is well described by two components, an elliptical King law and a more
peaked and fainter structure, which has been modeled with a Gaussian. The main
component, corresponding to the cluster, is elongated with the major axis
pointing toward the A3558 complex. The second component, centered on the
Dumb-bell galaxy which dominates the cluster, appears significantly offset (by
about 0.15 Mpc) from the cluster X-ray centroid.
From a Beppo-SAX observation we derive the radial temperature profile,
finding that the temperature is constant (at kT~3.7 keV) up to 8 arcmin,
corresponding to 0.3 Mpc: for larger distances, the temperature significantly
drops to kT~1.7 keV. We analyze also temperature maps, dividing the cluster in
4 sectors and deriving the temperature profiles in each sector: we find that
the temperature drop is more sudden in the sectors which point towards the
A3558 complex.
From VLA radio data, at 20 and 6 cm, we find a peculiar bright extended radio
source (J1332-3308), composed by a core (centered on the northern component of
the Dumb-bell galaxy), two lobes, a "filament" and a diffuse component. The
morphology of the source could be interpreted either with a strong interaction
of the radio source with the intracluster medium or with the model of
intermittency of the central engine.Comment: 8 pages with encapsulated figures, A&A in pres
