15Nitrogen transfer from legumes to neighbouring plants in multi-species grassland

This study investigates the N transfer from legumes to neighbouring plants, grasses, legumes and herbs in a temperate grassland. In a field experiment white clover (Trifolium repens), red clover (Trifolium pratense) and lucerne (Medicago sativa) were leaf-labelled with 15N enriched urea. The 15N tracer was measured in above-ground plant tissue of eight neighbouring plants in two subsequent harvests in 2008. The three legumes donated 15N to all neighbouring plants, of which grasses, white and red clover were strong receivers. Results show that N transfer increases with N application and from the 1st to the 2nd cut

The use of multi-species mixtures in herbage production can add value in terms of improved conditions for pollinating insects, better resource utilization, carbon sequestration, yield stability, animal health and product quality. Preliminary results of pheromone identification in Zygaena loti, and the potential for pheromones in burnet moth conservation.

Zygaena loti scotica (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775) is a threatened species endemic to Western Scotland. Its known distribution is currently limited to approximately 10km2 in Western Argyll, which are under careful management for the insect’s conservation as a Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) priority species. In 2014, a small number of Z. loti were collected from Scotland and reared for pheromone identification. Headspace collection and gland extraction was carried out on two female moths, from which compounds were subsequently analysed by Gas Chromatogram Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS). Potential pheromone compounds eliciting an antennal response in males were assessed by GC-linked Electro-Antennographic-Detection (GC/EAD). Analyses revealed one potential compound present in female glands and headspace samples. Candidate pheromone lures were produced and tested at various sites in Western Argyll in order to determine behavioural responses of male Z. loti to a synthetic blend containing the previously identified compound. In this presentation the study is discussed as well as the potential for pheromones as a tool for monitoring and studying rare zygaenids

Education as Regime Change in Aristotle\u27s Politics

Aristotle’s Politics is a study of political science, established by Aristotle as the practical science of all things related to the polis, the highest human community, with the purpose of securing and promoting the good life, that of noble action and happiness, for its citizens. Aristotle observes that the political communities in existence around him all fall short of this lofty goal, and much of the Politics and subsequent commentary on the Politics is an attempt to establish what type of regime is best able to achieve this highest end of the polis. This paper argues that the relationship between the end of the city, the happiness of its citizens, and the methods used to achieve that end are reciprocal, and that as such only the ideal form of regime change is capable of producing the ideal regime. Through an analysis of the Nicomachean Ethics, the Politics, and the Constitution of Athens, this study demonstrates that there is, according to Aristotle, only one proper method of regime change: education. Through proper education, of both the young and the old, both civic and intellectual, in what is noble and what is useful, the regime is able to progress towards the ideal regime simply. This ideal regime simply, then, is the rule of the virtuous multitude, in which all citizens of the city have achieved full virtue. Given that this may in fact be impossible, it is also apparent that it is only through proper education that the best regime possible is reached; any regime that has the ability, through education, to move closer to the regime of the virtuous multitude

Optimal advert placement slot – using the knapsack problem model

The Knapsack problem model is a general resource allocation model in which a single resource is assigned to a number of alternatives with the objective of maximizing the total return. In this work, we applied the knapsack problem model to the placement of advert slots in the media. The aim was to optimize the capital allocated for advert placements. The general practice is that funds are allocated by trial and error and at the discretions of persons. This approach most times do not yield maximum results, lesser audience are reached. But when the scientific Knapsack problem model was applied to industry data, a better result was achieved, wider audience and minimal cost was attained
