    Die Demokratisierung gesellschaftlicher Naturverhältnisse 'von unten': Soziale Bewegungen im Kontext von Postpolitik und ökologischer Krise

    Die in der Wissenschaft bilanzierte postpolitische Konfiguration der Politik hat eine wissenschaftliche Ungenauigkeit: Die Einschätzung und Bewertung des (Miss-)Erfolgs von (Klima-)Bewegungen begründen sich aus der diskursiven Konstruktion des Politischen und der Politik selbst heraus. Sie ist daher blind für ein durch soziale Bewegungen im Politischen Sinne erkämpftes verändertes Mensch-Natur-Verhältnis, da sie Natur als ein gesellschaftliches Konstrukt ohne Eigenlogik versteht. Für eine dezidierte Analyse sozialer Bewegungen im postpolitischen Kontext ist es also von Nöten, ein brauchbares Naturkonzept für ebenjenen 'blinden Fleck' zu entwerfen. Die Konzeption der gesellschaftlichen Naturverhältnisse soll dabei helfen: Diese begreift die Natur als eine Kategorie, die in einem dialektischen Verhältnis zur Gesellschaft steht. Natur wird durch den Menschen sozial produziert, entzieht sich aber einer vollkommenen Kontrolle durch ihren nichtidentischen Moment: Natur kann nicht eins mit dem menschlichen Denken sein. Dennoch bleibt das Verhältnis zwischen Mensch und Natur immer ein rein gesellschaftliches. Unter Rücksichtnahme aktueller Theoriedebatten wird ein Zusammenführen der Theorie des Politischen und der Theorie der gesellschaftlichen Naturverhältnisse getestet. Unter Bezug auf den Hambacher Forst wird diskutiert, ob die Einführung eines Mensch-Natur-Verhältnis als Kategorie in der Theoriedebatte des Politischen es ermöglicht, eine rein 'negativen' Bewertung des gesellschaftlichen (Miss-) Erfolges sozialer Bewegungen vorzubeugen

    Membranolytic Mechanism of Amphiphilic Antimicrobial β-Stranded [KL]n_n Peptides

    Amphipathic peptides can act as antibiotics due to membrane permeabilization. KL peptides with the repetitive sequence [Lys-Leu]n_n-NH2_2 form amphipathic β-strands in the presence of lipid bilayers. As they are known to kill bacteria in a peculiar length-dependent manner, we suggest here several different functional models, all of which seem plausible, including a carpet mechanism, a β-barrel pore, a toroidal wormhole, and a β-helix. To resolve their genuine mechanism, the activity of KL peptides with lengths from 6–26 amino acids (plus some inverted LK analogues) was systematically tested against bacteria and erythrocytes. Vesicle leakage assays served to correlate bilayer thickness and peptide length and to examine the role of membrane curvature and putative pore diameter. KL peptides with 10–12 amino acids showed the best therapeutic potential, i.e., high antimicrobial activity and low hemolytic side effects. Mechanistically, this particular window of an optimum β-strand length around 4 nm (11 amino acids × 3.7 Å) would match the typical thickness of a lipid bilayer, implying the formation of a transmembrane pore. Solid-state 15^{15}N- and 19^{19}F-NMR structure analysis, however, showed that the KL backbone lies flat on the membrane surface under all conditions. We can thus refute any of the pore models and conclude that the KL peptides rather disrupt membranes by a carpet mechanism. The intriguing length-dependent optimum in activity can be fully explained by two counteracting effects, i.e., membrane binding versus amyloid formation. Very short KL peptides are inactive, because they are unable to bind to the lipid bilayer as flexible β-strands, whereas very long peptides are inactive due to vigorous pre-aggregation into β-sheets in solution

    Oscillations and interactions of dark and dark-bright solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates

    Solitons are among the most distinguishing fundamental excitations in a wide range of non-linear systems such as water in narrow channels, high speed optical communication, molecular biology and astrophysics. Stabilized by a balance between spreading and focusing, solitons are wavepackets, which share some exceptional generic features like form-stability and particle-like properties. Ultra-cold quantum gases represent very pure and well-controlled non-linear systems, therefore offering unique possibilities to study soliton dynamics. Here we report on the first observation of long-lived dark and dark-bright solitons with lifetimes of up to several seconds as well as their dynamics in highly stable optically trapped 87^{87}Rb Bose-Einstein condensates. In particular, our detailed studies of dark and dark-bright soliton oscillations reveal the particle-like nature of these collective excitations for the first time. In addition, we discuss the collision between these two types of solitary excitations in Bose-Einstein condensates.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure

    Population genomic analysis of elongated skulls reveals extensive female-biased immigration in Early Medieval Bavaria

    Modern European genetic structure demonstrates strong correlations with geography, while genetic analysis of prehistoric humans has indicated at least two major waves of immigration from outside the continent during periods of cultural change. However, population-level genome data that could shed light on the demographic processes occurring during the intervening periods have been absent. Therefore, we generated genomic data from 41 individuals dating mostly to the late 5th/early 6th century AD from present-day Bavaria in southern Germany, including 11 whole genomes (mean depth 5.56×). In addition we developed a capture array to sequence neutral regions spanning a total of 5 Mb and 486 functional polymorphic sites to high depth (mean 72×) in all individuals. Our data indicate that while men generally had ancestry that closely resembles modern northern and central Europeans, women exhibit a very high genetic heterogeneity; this includes signals of genetic ancestry ranging from western Europe to East Asia. Particularly striking are women with artificial skull deformations; the analysis of their collective genetic ancestry suggests an origin in southeastern Europe. In addition, functional variants indicate that they also differed in visible characteristics. This example of female-biased migration indicates that complex demographic processes during the Early Medieval period may have contributed in an unexpected way to shape the modern European genetic landscape. Examination of the panel of functional loci also revealed that many alleles associated with recent positive selection were already at modern-like frequencies in European populations ∼1,500 years ago

    Optical dipole traps and atomic waveguides based on Bessel light beams

    We theoretically investigate the use of Bessel light beams generated using axicons for creating optical dipole traps for cold atoms and atomic waveguiding. Zeroth-order Bessel beams can be used to produce highly elongated dipole traps allowing for the study of one-dimensional trapped gases and realization of a Tonks gas of impentrable bosons. First-order Bessel beams are shown to be able to produce tight confined atomic waveguides over centimeter distances.Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures, to appear in Phys. Rev.

    European Association of Nuclear Medicine Focus 5: Consensus on Molecular Imaging and Theranostics in Prostate Cancer

    BACKGROUND In prostate cancer (PCa), questions remain on indications for prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) positron emission tomography (PET) imaging and PSMA radioligand therapy, integration of advanced imaging in nomogram-based decision-making, dosimetry, and development of new theranostic applications. OBJECTIVE We aimed to critically review developments in molecular hybrid imaging and systemic radioligand therapy, to reach a multidisciplinary consensus on the current state of the art in PCa. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS The results of a systematic literature search informed a two-round Delphi process with a panel of 28 PCa experts in medical or radiation oncology, urology, radiology, medical physics, and nuclear medicine. The results were discussed and ratified in a consensus meeting. OUTCOME MEASUREMENTS AND STATISTICAL ANALYSIS Forty-eight statements were scored on a Likert agreement scale and six as ranking options. Agreement statements were analysed using the RAND appropriateness method. Ranking statements were analysed using weighted summed scores. RESULTS AND LIMITATIONS After two Delphi rounds, there was consensus on 42/48 (87.5%) of the statements. The expert panel recommends PSMA PET to be used for staging the majority of patients with unfavourable intermediate and high risk, and for restaging of suspected recurrent PCa. There was consensus that oligometastatic disease should be defined as up to five metastases, even using advanced imaging modalities. The group agreed that [177^{177}Lu]Lu-PSMA should not be administered only after progression to cabazitaxel and that [223^{223}Ra]RaCl2_{2} remains a valid therapeutic option in bone-only metastatic castration-resistant PCa. Uncertainty remains on various topics, including the need for concordant findings on both [18F^{18F}]FDG and PSMA PET prior to [177^{177}Lu]Lu-PSMA therapy. CONCLUSIONS There was a high proportion of agreement among a panel of experts on the use of molecular imaging and theranostics in PCa. Although consensus statements cannot replace high-certainty evidence, these can aid in the interpretation and dissemination of best practice from centres of excellence to the wider clinical community. PATIENT SUMMARY There are situations when dealing with prostate cancer (PCa) where both the doctors who diagnose and track the disease development and response to treatment, and those who give treatments are unsure about what the best course of action is. Examples include what methods they should use to obtain images of the cancer and what to do when the cancer has returned or spread. We reviewed published research studies and provided a summary to a panel of experts in imaging and treating PCa. We also used the research summary to develop a questionnaire whereby we asked the experts to state whether or not they agreed with a list of statements. We used these results to provide guidance to other health care professionals on how best to image men with PCa and what treatments to give, when, and in what order, based on the information the images provide
