Functional principal components analysis via penalized rank one approximation
Two existing approaches to functional principal components analysis (FPCA)
are due to Rice and Silverman (1991) and Silverman (1996), both based on
maximizing variance but introducing penalization in different ways. In this
article we propose an alternative approach to FPCA using penalized rank one
approximation to the data matrix. Our contributions are four-fold: (1) by
considering invariance under scale transformation of the measurements, the new
formulation sheds light on how regularization should be performed for FPCA and
suggests an efficient power algorithm for computation; (2) it naturally
incorporates spline smoothing of discretized functional data; (3) the
connection with smoothing splines also facilitates construction of
cross-validation or generalized cross-validation criteria for smoothing
parameter selection that allows efficient computation; (4) different smoothing
parameters are permitted for different FPCs. The methodology is illustrated
with a real data example and a simulation.Comment: Published in at http://dx.doi.org/10.1214/08-EJS218 the Electronic

Fireworks-related Injuries during New Year celebrations in Kosovo: A comparison of the years 2008 and 2009
Background: Fireworks related injuries in children occur in Kosovo particularly during New Year celebrations.Aim: To report the pattern of fireworks- related injuries in childrenup to 16 years of age treated at the Emergency Center and Plastic Surgery,University Clinical Centre of Kosovo during the 2008 and 2009 New Year celebrations. Methods: Retrospective review of hospital recordsResults: During the New Year celebrations in 2008, a total of 65 caseswere admitted, 32 (49.2%) of who were children injured by fireworks. The ages of the children ranged from 5 to 16 years with a mean of 10.5years. The modal age affected was the 10 – 14 year-old group (53.6%). Boys constituted 93.8% of patients and girls 6.3%. During the 2009 New Year celebration, 17 cases were admitted with fireworks injuries, 12 (70.58%) of who were children ranging in age from 8 to 15 years (mean 11.5 years) with a modal age group of 10 – 14 years (66.7%). Boys accounted for 88.3% and girls for 16.7% of patients. Conclusions: The frequency of fireworks injuries reduced appreciablyafter introduction of laws restricting sales of fireworks devices and banningtheir use by children.Recommendations: It is recommended that parents play a greaterrole in controlling the activities of their children during festivities. Thegovernment and police should also ensure compliance with the law onthe use of fireworks during the holidays.Key words: fireworks injury, epidemiology, wounds, prevention
CASTOR: The ALICE forward detector for identification of Centauros and Strangelets in Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions at the LHC
The physics motivation for a very forward detector for the ALICE heavy ion
experiment at the CERN LHC is discussed. A phenomenological model describing
the formation and decay of a Centauro fireball in nucleus-nucleus collisions is
presented. The CASTOR detector which is aimed to measure the hadronic and
photonic content of an interaction and to identify deeply penetrating objects
in the very forward, baryon-rich phase space 5.6 < eta < 7.2 in an
event-by-event mode is described. Results of simulations of the expected
response of the calorimeter, and in particular to the passage of strangelets,
are presented.Comment: Presented at XXVIII Int. Symp. on Multiparticle Dynamics, Delphi,

Clinical trials for stem cell therapies
In recent years, clinical trials with stem cells have taken the emerging field in many new directions. While numerous teams continue to refine and expand the role of bone marrow and cord blood stem cells for their vanguard uses in blood and immune disorders, many others are looking to expand the uses of the various types of stem cells found in bone marrow and cord blood, in particular mesenchymal stem cells, to uses beyond those that could be corrected by replacing cells in their own lineage. Early results from these trials have produced mixed results often showing minor or transitory improvements that may be attributed to extracellular factors. More research teams are accelerating the use of other types of adult stem cells, in particular neural stem cells for diseases where beneficial outcome could result from either in-lineage cell replacement or extracellular factors. At the same time, the first three trials using cells derived from pluripotent cells have begun
Nuclear Interactions Of Super High Energy Cosmic-rays Observed In Mountain Emulsion Chambers
Here we present a summary of joint discussions on the results of three mountain experiments with large-scale emulsion chambers, at Pamir, Mt. Fuji and Chacaltaya. Observations cover gamma quanta, hadrons and their clusters (called "families"). The following topics are covered, concerning the characteristics of nuclear interactions the energy region 1014-1016 eV: (i) rapid dissipation seen in atmospheric diffusion of high-energy cosmic-rays; (ii) multiplicity and Pt increase in produced pi-mesons in the fragmentation region; (iii) existence of large-Pt jets, (iv) extremely hadron-rich family of the Centauro type; (v) exotic phenomena in the extremely high energy region beyond 1016 eV. © 1981.1911125(1977) Acta Univ. The Analysis of Two-Way Functional Data Using Two-Way Regularized Singular Value Decompositions
Two-way functional data consist of a data matrix whose row and column domains are both structured, for example, temporally or spatially, as when the data are time series collected at different locations in space. We extend one-way functional principal component analysis (PCA) to two-way functional data by introducing regularization of both left and right singular vectors in the singular value decomposition (SVD) of the data matrix. We focus on a penalization approach and solve the nontrivial problem of constructing proper two-way penalties from oneway regression penalties. We introduce conditional cross-validated smoothing parameter selection whereby left-singular vectors are cross- validated conditional on right-singular vectors, and vice versa. The concept can be realized as part of an alternating optimization algorithm. In addition to the penalization approach, we briefly consider two-way regularization with basis expansion. The proposed methods are illustrated with one simulated and two real data examples. Supplemental materials available online show that several "natural" approaches to penalized SVDs are flawed and explain why so. © 2009 American Statistical Association.Link_to_subscribed_fulltex
