    Temperature and food quantity effects on the harpacticoid copepod Nitocra spinipes : combining in vivo bioassays with population modeling

    The harpacticoid copepod Nitocra spinipes has become a popular model species for toxicity testing over the past few decades. However, the combined influence of temperature and food shortage, two climate change-related stressors, has never been assessed in this species. Consequently, effects of three temperatures (15, 20 and 25ËšC) and six food regimes (between 0 and 5 Ă— 10^5 algal cells/mL) on the life cycle of N. spinipes were examined in this study. Similarly to other copepod species, development times and brood sizes decreased with rising temperatures. Mortality was lowest in the 20ËšC temperature setup, indicating a close-by temperature optimum for this species. Decreasing food concentrations led to increased development times, higher mortality and a reduction in brood size. A sex ratio shift toward more females per male was observed for increasing temperatures, while no significant relationship with food concentration was found. Temperature and food functions for each endpoint were integrated into an existing individual-based population model for N. spinipes which in the future may serve as an extrapolation tool in environmental risk assessment. The model was able to accurately reproduce the experimental data in subsequent verification simulations. We suggest that temperature, food shortage, and potentially other climate change-related stressors should be considered in environmental risk assessment of chemicals to account for non-optimal exposure conditions that may occur in the field. Furthermore, we advocate combining in vivo bioassays with population modeling as a cost effective higher tier approach to assess such considerations

    Evaluation of diabetic peer support in Malawi

    BackgroundType 2 diabetes is a major health concern worldwide and requires urgent attention from health care providers and policy makers. Due to shortage of health care workers in low-income countries, peer support programs have been viewed as a viable option in management of diabetes and have shown to be effective in sub-Saharan Africa. ObjectiveThe aim of this study is to assess and evaluate the Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) diabetic peer support program’s (DPSP) impact 4 years after its establishment by assessing knowledge, self-efficacy and behaviours of DPSP members compared to non-members.Methodology This is a cross-sectional study done among diabetic patients attending clinics between 12th August and 25th September 2018 at KCH. Self and interviewer-administered questionnaires (designed based on validated survey instruments) were used. The participants (n=176) were recruited consecutively after consenting. Results Results showed DPSP members were more knowledgeable regarding the effects of skipping meals and sweet juice on blood glucose and conditions not associated with diabetes. In terms of self-efficacy and behaviour changes, DPSP members believe that they are more able to correct hypoglycaemia, to communicate their concerns to health workers and to perform daily foot exam compared to non-members.Conclusion The KCH (Lilongwe) Diabetes Peer Support program has positively impacted its members and should be scaled up to engage all diabetic patients in Malawi. Ongoing training for peer supporters is necessary to update and reinforce management, knowledge and skills, and to ensure fidelity in program implementation

    Creation of single vacancies in hBN with electron irradiation

    Understanding electron irradiation effects is vital not only for reliable transmission electron microscopy characterization, but increasingly also for the controlled manipulation of two-dimensional materials. The displacement cross sections of monolayer hBN are measured using aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy in near ultra-high vacuum at primary beam energies between 50 and 90 keV. Damage rates below 80 keV are up to three orders of magnitude lower than previously measured at edges under poorer residual vacuum conditions where chemical etching appears to have been dominant. Notably, is possible to create single vacancies in hBN using electron irradiation, with boron almost twice as likely as nitrogen to be ejected below 80 keV. Moreover, any damage at such low energies cannot be explained by elastic knock-on, even when accounting for vibrations of the atoms. A theoretical description is developed to account for lowering of the displacement threshold due to valence ionization resulting from inelastic scattering of probe electrons, modelled using charge-constrained density functional theory molecular dynamics. Although significant reductions are found depending on the constrained charge, quantitative predictions for realistic ionization states are currently not possible. Nonetheless, there is potential for defect-engineering of hBN at the level of single vacancies using electron irradiation.Comment: 38 pages, 15 figure

    Depression, anxiety and stress among healthcare workers in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic: a cross-sectional study in a tertiary hospital in Northern Vietnam

    IntroductionThe outbreak of coronavirus severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV2) had significant effects on the mental well-being in general, particularly for healthcare professionals. This study examined the prevalence of depression, anxiety, and stress, and identified the associated risk factors amongst healthcare workers during the COVID-19 outbreak in a tertiary hospital located in Vietnam.MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional study at a tertiary-level hospital, where the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale 21 (DASS-21) web-based questionnaire was employed. We analyzed the determinant factors by employing multivariate logistic models.ResultsThe prevalence of depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms were 19.2%, 24.7%, and 13.9%, respectively. Factors such as engaging in shift work during the pandemic, taking care of patients with COVID-19, and staff’s health status were associated with mental health issues among health professionals. In addition, having alternate rest periods was likely to reduce the risk of stress.ConclusionThe prevalence of mental health problems in healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic was relatively high. Having resting periods could potentially mitigate the development of stress among health professionals. Our findings could be taken into account for improving mental health of the health professional population

    Micronutrient Deficits Are Still Public Health Issues among Women and Young Children in Vietnam

    Background: The 2000 Vietnamese National Nutrition Survey showed that the population’s dietary intake had improved since 1987. However, inequalities were found in food consumption between socioeconomic groups. As no national data exist on the prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies, a survey was conducted in 2010 to assess the micronutrient status of randomly selected 1526 women of reproductive age and 586 children aged 6–75 mo. Principal Findings: In women, according to international thresholds, prevalence of zinc deficiency (ZnD, 67.262.6%) and vitamin B12 deficiency (11.761.7%) represented public health problems, whereas prevalence of anemia (11.661.0%) and iron deficiency (ID, 13.761.1%) were considered low, and folate (,3%) and vitamin A (VAD,,2%) deficiencies were considered negligible. However, many women had marginal folate (25.1%) and vitamin A status (13.6%). Moreover, overweight (BMI$23 kg/m 2 for Asian population) or underweight occurred in 20 % of women respectively highlighting the double burden of malnutrition. In children, a similar pattern was observed for ZnD (51.963.5%), anemia (9.161.4%) and ID (12.961.5%) whereas prevalence of marginal vitamin A status was also high (47.362.2%). There was a significant effect of age on anemia and ID prevalence, with the youngest age group (6–17 mo) having the highest risk for anemia, ID, ZnD and marginal vitamin A status as compared to other groups.
