    Commissioning of the vacuum system of the KATRIN Main Spectrometer

    The KATRIN experiment will probe the neutrino mass by measuring the beta-electron energy spectrum near the endpoint of tritium beta-decay. An integral energy analysis will be performed by an electro-static spectrometer (Main Spectrometer), an ultra-high vacuum vessel with a length of 23.2 m, a volume of 1240 m^3, and a complex inner electrode system with about 120000 individual parts. The strong magnetic field that guides the beta-electrons is provided by super-conducting solenoids at both ends of the spectrometer. Its influence on turbo-molecular pumps and vacuum gauges had to be considered. A system consisting of 6 turbo-molecular pumps and 3 km of non-evaporable getter strips has been deployed and was tested during the commissioning of the spectrometer. In this paper the configuration, the commissioning with bake-out at 300{\deg}C, and the performance of this system are presented in detail. The vacuum system has to maintain a pressure in the 10^{-11} mbar range. It is demonstrated that the performance of the system is already close to these stringent functional requirements for the KATRIN experiment, which will start at the end of 2016.Comment: submitted for publication in JINST, 39 pages, 15 figure

    Burden of paediatric Rotavirus Gastroenteritis (RVGE) and potential benefits of a universal Rotavirus vaccination programme with a pentavalent vaccine in Spain

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Rotavirus is the most common cause of gastroenteritis in young children worldwide. The aim of the study was to assess the health outcomes and the economic impact of a universal rotavirus vaccination programme with RotaTeq, the pentavalent rotavirus vaccine, versus no vaccination programme in Spain.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A birth cohort was followed up to the age of 5 using a cohort model. Epidemiological parameters were taken from the REVEAL study (a prospective epidemiological study conducted in Spain, 2004-2005) and from the literature. Direct and indirect costs were assessed from the national healthcare payer and societal perspectives by combining health care resource utilisation collected in REVEAL study and unit costs from official sources. RotaTeq per protocol efficacy data was taken from a large worldwide rotavirus clinical trial (70,000 children). Health outcomes included home care cases, General Practioner (GP)/Paediatrician, emergency department visits, hospitalisations and nosocomial infections.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The model estimates that the introduction of a universal rotavirus vaccination programme with RotaTeq (90% coverage rate) would reduce the rotavirus gastroenteritis (RVGE) burden by 75% in Spain; 53,692 home care cases, 35,187 GP/Paediatrician visits, 34,287 emergency department visits, 10,987 hospitalisations and 2,053 nosocomial infections would be avoided. The introduction of RotaTeq would avoid about 76% of RVGE-related costs from both perspectives: €22 million from the national health system perspective and €38 million from the societal perspective.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>A rotavirus vaccination programme with RotaTeq would reduce significantly the important medical and economic burden of RVGE in Spain.</p

    Slow-moving and far-travelled dense pyroclastic flows during the Peach Spring super-eruption

    International audienceExplosive volcanic super-eruptions of several hundred cubic kilometres or more generate long run-out pyroclastic density currents the dynamics of which are poorly understood and controversial. Deposits of one such event in the southwestern USA, the 18.8 Ma Peach Spring Tuff, were formed by pyroclastic flows that travelled 4170 km from the eruptive centre and entrained blocks up to B70–90 cm diameter from the substrates along the flow paths. Here we combine these data with new experimental results to show that the flow's base had high-particle concentration and relatively modest speeds of B5–20 m s À 1 , fed by an eruption discharging magma at rates up to B10 7 –10 8 m 3 s À 1 for a minimum of 2.5–10 h. We conclude that sustained high-eruption discharge and long-lived high-pore pressure in dense granular dispersion can be more important than large initial velocity and turbulent transport with dilute suspension in promoting long pyroclastic flow distance

    Constraint-induced movement therapy for children with obstetric brachial plexus palsy

    The objective of this pilot study was to investigate the feasibility of constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT) in children with obstetric brachial plexus palsy and receive preliminary information about functional improvements. Two patients (age 12 years) with obstetric brachial plexus palsy were included for a 126-h home-based CIMT intervention (3 and 4.5 weeks) and weekly monitored with the Melbourne Assessment of Unilateral Upper Limb function and the Nine-hole Peg Test. The Assisted Hand Assessment was performed 3 weeks before the beginning of intervention, preintervention, postintervention, and at 3 weeks follow-up (ABA single-case design). Tests were analyzed descriptively, visually, and where possible, using a time series analysis with C statistic. Results revealed changes of arm function in both patients between preintervention and follow-up test as follows: Assisted Hand Assessment from 85 to 92% in patient A and 80 to 89% in patient B, in the Melbourne Assessment of Unilateral Upper Limb function from 87 to 90% (C=0.578, z=1.876, P<0.05) in patient A and 72 to 80% (C=0.827, z=2.68, P<0.005) in patient B. There was no improvement in the Nine-hole Peg Test in both patients. Improvements as a result of CIMT found in this pilot study may not be considered substantial. However, they justify further research as some findings indicate relationship to the CIMT intervention in the 'B' phase. To enhance motivation and to plan a controlled, randomized clinical trial, child-friendly applications of the CIMT concept and adequate measures to monitor compliance are being discussed
