    Domain Wall Bubbles in High Energy Heavy Ion Collisions

    It has been recently shown that meta-stable domain walls exist in high-density QCD (μ0\mu\neq 0) as well as in QCD with large number of colors (NcN_c\to\infty), with the lifetime being exponentially long in both cases. Such metastable domain walls may exist in our world as well, especially in hot hadronic matter with temperature close to critical. In this paper we discuss what happens if a bubble made of such wall is created in heavy ion collisions, in the mixed phase between QGP and hadronic matter. We show it will further be expanded to larger volume 20fm3\sim 20 fm^3 by the pion pressure, before it disappears, either by puncture or contraction. Both scenarios leave distinctive experimental signatures of such events, negatively affecting the interference correlations between the outgoing pions.Comment: 6 pages, 1 fi

    Can Induced Theta Vacua be Created in Heavy Ion Collisions?

    The development of the early Universe is a remarkable laboratory for the study of most nontrivial properties of particle physics. What is more remarkable is the fact that these phenomena at the QCD scale can be, in principle, experimentally tested in heavy ion collisions. We expect that, in general, an arbitrary theta-state would be created in the heavy ion collisions, similar to the creation of the disoriented chiral condensate with an arbitrary isospin direction. It should be a large domain with a wrong θ0\theta\neq 0 orientation. We test this idea numerically in a simple model where we study the evolution of the phases of the chiral condensates in QCD with two quark flavors with non-zero theta-parameter. We see the formation of a non-zero theta-vacuum with the formation time of the order of 102310^{-23} seconds.     We have studied possible formation of Θ\Theta vacua states in heavy ion collisions. Random phases of the chiral fields were evolved in a finite temperature potential, incorporating the breaking of UA(1)U_A(1) symmetry. Initial random phases very quickly settle into oscillation around the values dictated by the potential. The simulation study indicate that an initial Θ\Theta=0 state do not evolve into a Θ\Theta \neq 0 state. However, an initial Θ\Theta \neq 0 state, if formed in heavy ion collision, can survive, as a coherent superposition of a number of modes.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure

    Snow Cover and Precipitation Impacts on Dry Season Streamflow in the Lower Mekong Basin

    Climate change impacts on dry season streamflow in the Mekong River are relatively understudied, despite the fact that water availability during this time is critically important for agricultural and ecological systems. Analyses of two gauging stations (Vientiane and Kratie) in the Lower Mekong Basin (LMB) show significant positive correlations between dry season (March through May, MAM) discharge and upper basin snow cover and local precipitation. Using snow cover, precipitation, and upstream discharge as predictors, we develop skillful regression models for MAM streamflow at Vientiane and Kratie, and force these models with output from a suite of general circulation model (GCM) experiments for the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The GCM simulations predict divergent trends in snow cover (decreasing) and precipitation (increasing) over the twenty-first century, driving overall negligible long-term trends in dry season streamflow. Our study demonstrates how future changes in dry season streamflow in the LMB will depend on changes in snow cover and precipitation, factors that will need to be considered when assessing the full basin response to other climatic and non-climatic drivers

    Impact of HIV Counseling and Testing on HIV-Infected Men who have Sex with Men: The South Beach Health Survey

    The impact of HIV counseling and testing on sexual risk-taking and related behaviors reported by HIV-infected men who have sex with men (MSM) was examined in a cross-sectional study conducted among a representative sample of residents living in a resort area. Participants provided specimens of oral mucosal transudate for HIV-antibody testing, were interviewed in their homes, and completed a self-administered questionnaire. Specimens were tested by modified ELISA and, if repeatedly positive, confirmed by Western blot. Of 205 men enrolled, 51 (24.9%) tested positive for antibody to HIV. All 51 had been counseled and tested for antibody to HIV-1 (median = 4 tests); 37 (74%) of 50 reported that their most recent test was positive. Twenty (39.2%) said they had engaged in unprotected insertive anal intercourse in the past year; 15 (29.4%) engaged in unprotected insertive anal intercourse with partners who may have been susceptible to HIV infection. Men who reported that their last HIV-antibody test was positive were three times more likely to have engaged in unprotected insertive anal intercourse in the past year (45.9%) as those who did not know they were infected with HIV (15.4%). Counseling and testing is ineffective as a measure for promoting behavior change among HIV-positive MSM in South Beach. More effective social and behavioral interventions must be developed, implemented, and evaluated

    Widespread dysregulation of MiRNAs by MYCN amplification and chromosomal imbalances in neuroblastoma: association of miRNA expression with survival

    MiRNAs regulate gene expression at a post-transcriptional level and their dysregulation can play major roles in the pathogenesis of many different forms of cancer, including neuroblastoma, an often fatal paediatric cancer originating from precursor cells of the sympathetic nervous system. We have analyzed a set of neuroblastoma (n = 145) that is broadly representative of the genetic subtypes of this disease for miRNA expression (430 loci by stem-loop RT qPCR) and for DNA copy number alterations (array CGH) to assess miRNA involvement in disease pathogenesis. The tumors were stratified and then randomly split into a training set (n = 96) and a validation set (n = 49) for data analysis. Thirty-seven miRNAs were significantly over-or under-expressed in MYCN amplified tumors relative to MYCN single copy tumors, indicating a potential role for the MYCN transcription factor in either the direct or indirect dysregulation of these loci. In addition, we also determined that there was a highly significant correlation between miRNA expression levels and DNA copy number, indicating a role for large-scale genomic imbalances in the dysregulation of miRNA expression. In order to directly assess whether miRNA expression was predictive of clinical outcome, we used the Random Forest classifier to identify miRNAs that were most significantly associated with poor overall patient survival and developed a 15 miRNA signature that was predictive of overall survival with 72.7% sensitivity and 86.5% specificity in the validation set of tumors. We conclude that there is widespread dysregulation of miRNA expression in neuroblastoma tumors caused by both over-expression of the MYCN transcription factor and by large-scale chromosomal imbalances. MiRNA expression patterns are also predicative of clinical outcome, highlighting the potential for miRNA mediated diagnostics and therapeutics
