Gendered geographies of environmental injustice

Copyright @ 2009 The Authors.As environmental justice concerns become more widely embedded in environmental organizations and policy making, and increasingly the focus of academic study, the gender dimension dissolves into an exclusive focus on race/ethnicity and class/income. While grass roots campaigning activities were often dominated by women, in the more institutionalized activities of organizations dominated by salaried professionals, gender inequality is neglected as a vector of environmental injustice, and addressing this inequality is not considered a strategy for redress. This paper explores some of the reasons why this may be so, which include a lack of visibility of gendered environmental injustice; professional campaigning organizations which are themselves gender blind; institutions at a range of scales which are still structured by gender (as well as class and race) inequalities; and an intellectual academy which continues to marginalize the study of gender – and women’s – inequality. The authors draw on experience of environmental activism, participant observation, and other qualitative research into the gendering of environmental activity, to first explore the constructions of scale to see how this might limit a gender-fair approach to environmental justice. Following this, the practice of ‘gender mainstreaming’ in environmental organizations and institutions will be examined, demonstrating how this is limited in scope and fails to impact on the gendering of environmental injustice

Dimensional analysis using toric ideals: Primitive invariants

This is an open-access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original author and source are credited.Classical dimensional analysis in its original form starts by expressing the units for derived quantities, such as force, in terms of power products of basic units M, L, T etc. This suggests the use of toric ideal theory from algebraic geometry. Within this the Graver basis provides a unique primitive basis in a well-defined sense, which typically has more terms than the standard Buckingham approach. Some textbook examples are revisited and the full set of primitive invariants found. First, a worked example based on convection is introduced to recall the Buckingham method, but using computer algebra to obtain an integer K matrix from the initial integer A matrix holding the exponents for the derived quantities. The K matrix defines the dimensionless variables. But, rather than this integer linear algebra approach it is shown how, by staying with the power product representation, the full set of invariants (dimensionless groups) is obtained directly from the toric ideal defined by A. One candidate for the set of invariants is a simple basis of the toric ideal. This, although larger than the rank of K, is typically not unique. However, the alternative Graver basis is unique and defines a maximal set of invariants, which are primitive in a simple sense. In addition to the running example four examples are taken from: a windmill, convection, electrodynamics and the hydrogen atom. The method reveals some named invariants. Philosophies of adult education as practiced by agricultural education teachers in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Virginia
The purpose of this study was to increase understanding of adult education philosophies as practiced by Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Virginia secondary school agriculture teachers.;A Philosophy of Adult Education Inventory (PAEI) and researcher-created demographic sheet was sent to a sample of agriculture teachers in the tri-state area (n = 314). Descriptive data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences for Windows (SPSS). Frequencies, means, and correlational and multivariate analyses were used to describe and analyze the research results.;It was shown that there is a slight relationship between adult education preparation and the five philosophies. The Humanist philosophy is statistically significant when comparing the states of Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Educator\u27s payment for teaching adult classes is significant when compared to the Progressive orientation. The Liberal and Behaviorist philosophies were shown to have a very strong association as do the Progressive and Behaviorist philosophies

Computational Power and Realistic Cognitive Development
We explore the ability of a static connectionist algorithm to model children's acquisition of velocity, time, and distance concepts under architectures of different levels of computational power. Diagnosis of rules learned by networks indicated that static networks were either too powerful or too weak to capture the developmental course of children's concepts. Networks with too much power missed intermediate stages; those with too little power failed to reach terminal stages. These results were robust under a variety of learning parameter values. We argue that a generative connectionist algorithm provides a better model of development of these concepts by gradually increasing representational power
Effects of moisture in infrared thermography of resin matrix composites
Several multiply graphite polyimide composite specimens were examined by real-time infrared thermography in order to study the effects of moisture on their thermograms. Heat was injected from one side and IR emission detected on the opposite side using AGA Thermovision System-680. No differences between the thermograms of dry and water containing specimens were detected for defect-free specimens. However, the presence of trapped water in defective specimens modified the thermographic contrast significantly. It is concluded that: (1) IR thermography can be used to detect moisture in defective composites, and (2) because of the possibility of moisture camouflaging defects, IR thermography for subsurface defect detection should be supplemented by other techniques - such as acoustical imaging and X-radiography
Implosion in the Challenger Deep: echo sounding with the shock wave

Oceanography, 34(2), (2021), https://doi.org/10.5670/oceanog.2021.201.Since HMS Challenger made the first sounding in the Mariana Trench in 1875, scientists and explorers have been seeking to establish the exact location and depth of the deepest part of the ocean. The scientific consensus is that the deepest depth is situated in the Challenger Deep, an abyss in the Mariana Trench with depths greater than 10,000 m. Since1952, when HMS Challenger II, following its namesake, returned to the Mariana Trench, 20 estimates (including the one from this study) of the depth of the Challenger Deep have been made. The location and depth estimates are as diverse as the methods used to obtain them; they range from early measurements with explosives and stopwatches, to single- and multibeam sonars, to submersibles, both crewed and remotely operated. In December 2014, we participated in an expedition to the Challenger Deep onboard Schmidt Ocean Institute’s R/V Falkor and deployed two free-falling, passive-acoustic instrument platforms, each with a glass-sphere pressure housing containing system electronics. At a nominal depth of 9,000 m, one of these housings imploded, creating a highly energetic shock wave that, as recorded by the other instrument, reflected multiple times from the sea surface and seafloor. From the arrival times of these multi-path pulses at the surviving instrument, in conjunction with a concurrent measurement of the sound speed profile in the water column, we obtained a highly constrained acoustic estimate of the Challenger Deep: 10,983 ± 6 m.This work was funded by the Schmidt Ocean Institute, the Ocean Frontiers Institute, and the Office of Naval Research, Ocean Acoustics, Code 322OA, grant number N00014-18-1-2126
Cues and knowledge structures used by mental-health professionals when making risk assessments
Background: Research into mental-health risks has tended to focus on epidemiological approaches and to consider pieces of evidence in isolation. Less is known about the particular
factors and their patterns of occurrence that influence clinicians’ risk judgements in practice.
Aims: To identify the cues used by clinicians to make risk judgements and to explore how these combine within clinicians’ psychological representations of suicide, self-harm, self-neglect, and harm to others.
Method: Content analysis was applied to semi-structured interviews conducted with 46 practitioners from various mental-health disciplines, using mind maps to represent the
hierarchical relationships of data and concepts.
Results: Strong consensus between experts meant their knowledge could be integrated into a single hierarchical structure for each risk. This revealed contrasting emphases between data and concepts underpinning risks, including: reflection and forethought for suicide; motivation
for self-harm; situation and context for harm to others; and current presentation for self-neglect.
Conclusions: Analysis of experts’ risk-assessment knowledge identified influential cues and their relationships to risks. It can inform development of valid risk-screening decision support systems that combine actuarial evidence with clinical expertise
