    Explicit Evidence Systems with Common Knowledge

    Justification logics are epistemic logics that explicitly include justifications for the agents' knowledge. We develop a multi-agent justification logic with evidence terms for individual agents as well as for common knowledge. We define a Kripke-style semantics that is similar to Fitting's semantics for the Logic of Proofs LP. We show the soundness, completeness, and finite model property of our multi-agent justification logic with respect to this Kripke-style semantics. We demonstrate that our logic is a conservative extension of Yavorskaya's minimal bimodal explicit evidence logic, which is a two-agent version of LP. We discuss the relationship of our logic to the multi-agent modal logic S4 with common knowledge. Finally, we give a brief analysis of the coordinated attack problem in the newly developed language of our logic

    A Logic of Blockchain Updates

    Blockchains are distributed data structures that are used to achieve consensus in systems for cryptocurrencies (like Bitcoin) or smart contracts (like Ethereum). Although blockchains gained a lot of popularity recently, there is no logic-based model for blockchains available. We introduce BCL, a dynamic logic to reason about blockchain updates, and show that BCL is sound and complete with respect to a simple blockchain model

    Estudio de caso: Evaluación de impacto de la intervención del Proyecto INCOPA/ ADERS en Huánuco

    El desafío de identificar y aprovechar nuevas oportunidades de mercado para los pequeños productores de papa peruana, articulándolos con otros actores de la cadena agro- alimentaria de este tubérculo, es asumido por el proyecto INCOPA – Promoción Competitiva de la Papa Peruana para Responder a Nuevas Oportunidades de Mercado1 – desde su origen en el año 2001. Este proyecto, que es financiado por la Agencia Suiza para la Cooperación y el Desarrollo (COSUDE) y coordinado por el Centro Internacional de la Papa (CIP), realizó en el año 2006 una evaluación de su segunda fase, en la cual se observaron algunos indicios sobre cambios positivos en cuanto a ingresos económicos y mejor relacionamiento con el mercado en las organizaciones y familias de productores participantes. Con el fin de complementar este estudio anterior, se decidió realizar un estudio de impacto para conocer la dimensión de estos y otros cambios en las familias de productores de una de sus sedes de operación, Huánuco, donde viene trabajando desde el año 2002, a través de su socio local ADERS. INCOPA y ADERS combinaron sus esfuerzos y capacidades en esta sede, en una intervención que no fue planificada del modo en que finalmente se implementó. Esta fue tomando forma en el camino, aprovechando la oportunidad que dio el proyecto PRO-PAPA, y bajo la influencia del Enfoque Participativo de Cadenas Productivas (EPCP), en pleno desarrollo durante la intervención. Se llegó a consolidar una forma de trabajar que tanto ADERS como INCOPA han sabido sacar provecho y extender a otros lugares

    Transformer-Based Neural Surrogate for Link-Level Path Loss Prediction from Variable-Sized Maps

    Estimating path loss for a transmitter-receiver location is key to many use-cases including network planning and handover. Machine learning has become a popular tool to predict wireless channel properties based on map data. In this work, we present a transformer-based neural network architecture that enables predicting link-level properties from maps of various dimensions and from sparse measurements. The map contains information about buildings and foliage. The transformer model attends to the regions that are relevant for path loss prediction and, therefore, scales efficiently to maps of different size. Further, our approach works with continuous transmitter and receiver coordinates without relying on discretization. In experiments, we show that the proposed model is able to efficiently learn dominant path losses from sparse training data and generalizes well when tested on novel maps.Comment: Accepted at IEEE GLOBECOM 2023, v2: Changed license on arxi

    Marginal Pinning of Quenched Random Polymers

    An elastic string embedded in 3D space and subject to a short-range correlated random potential exhibits marginal pinning at high temperatures, with the pinning length Lc(T)L_c(T) becoming exponentially sensitive to temperature. Using a functional renormalization group (FRG) approach we find Lc(T)exp[(32/π)(T/Tdp)3]L_c(T) \propto \exp[(32/\pi)(T/T_{\rm dp})^3], with TdpT_{\rm dp} the depinning temperature. A slow decay of disorder correlations as it appears in the problem of flux line pinning in superconductors modifies this result, lnLc(T)T3/2\ln L_c(T)\propto T^{3/2}.Comment: 4 pages, RevTeX, 1 figure inserte

    Impact of long-range interactions on the disordered vortex lattice

    The interaction between the vortex lines in a type-II superconductor is mediated by currents. In the absence of transverse screening this interaction is long-ranged, stiffening up the vortex lattice as expressed by the dispersive elastic moduli. The effect of disorder is strongly reduced, resulting in a mean-squared displacement correlator = characterized by a mere logarithmic growth with distance. Finite screening cuts the interaction on the scale of the London penetration depth \lambda and limits the above behavior to distances R<\lambda. Using a functional renormalization group (RG) approach, we derive the flow equation for the disorder correlation function and calculate the disorder-averaged mean-squared relative displacement \propto ln^{2\sigma} (R/a_0). The logarithmic growth (2\sigma=1) in the perturbative regime at small distances [A.I. Larkin and Yu.N. Ovchinnikov, J. Low Temp. Phys. 34, 409 (1979)] crosses over to a sub-logarithmic growth with 2\sigma=0.348 at large distances.Comment: 9 pages, no figure

    Post-Construction Support and Sustainability in Community-Managed Rural Water Supply

    Executive Summary This volume reports the main findings from a multi-country research project that was designed to develop a better understanding of how rural water supply systems are performing in developing countries. We began the research in 2004 to investigate how the provision of support to communities after the construction of a rural water supply project affected project performance in the medium term. We collected information from households, village water committees, focus groups of village residents, system operators, and key informants in 400 rural communities in Bolivia, Ghana, and Peru; in total, we discussed community water supply issues with approximately 10,000 individuals in these communities. To our surprise, we found the great majority of the village water systems were performing well. Our findings on the factors influencing their sustainability will, we hope, be of use to policy makers, investors, and managers in rural water supply

    We here report of a conference about "Pesticides in Soil, Groundwater and Food in Latin America as part of One Health" that took place at the "IV Seminario Internacional de Sanidad Agropecuaria (SISA)" in Varadero, Cuba, 8-12 May 2023. Researchers of Latin America (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico) and Switzerland (workshop initiator) held presentations about occurrence and effects of pesticides on the environment, human health, the replacement of highly hazardous pesticides (HHP) by agroecological alternatives and the agri-food value chain. In a subsequent round table discussion, the presenters identified deficits, needs, interests and opportunities. According to them, the lack of awareness of pesticide use affects the health and safety of workers applying the chemicals. Despite Latin America representing the main agricultural area in the world with a very intense pesticide use, monitoring data of pesticides in soil, surface and groundwaters, food, as well as in humans are missing. Risks of pesticides to humans should be assessed so that authorities can withdraw or limit within "short time" the access to corresponding formulations on the market. Also, communication is not state of the art and should be improved as, e.g. the teaching of workers and farmers, how to correctly use and apply pesticides or the briefing of decision makers. Pollinators suffer from multiple stressors not the least due to pesticides, and alternatives are badly needed. On the technical side, the different analytical methods to determine residues of active ingredients and transformation products in matrices of concern should be harmonized among laboratories.Seven future actions and goals were identified to overcome the above deficits. Next steps after the publishing of this conference report are to harmonize and complete the information status of the presenters by exchanging the results/data already present. Therefore, a platform of interaction to address issues described above and to enhance collaboration shall be created. Samples of different matrices shall be exchanged to harmonize the chemical analysis and establish interlaboratory comparisons. Such activities might be facilitated by joining international associations or organizations, where researchers can offer their expertise, or by forming a new pesticide network for Central and South America that could present tailored projects to national and international organizations and funding agencies

    Functional Renormalization Group and the Field Theory of Disordered Elastic Systems

    We study elastic systems such as interfaces or lattices, pinned by quenched disorder. To escape triviality as a result of ``dimensional reduction'', we use the functional renormalization group. Difficulties arise in the calculation of the renormalization group functions beyond 1-loop order. Even worse, observables such as the 2-point correlation function exhibit the same problem already at 1-loop order. These difficulties are due to the non-analyticity of the renormalized disorder correlator at zero temperature, which is inherent to the physics beyond the Larkin length, characterized by many metastable states. As a result, 2-loop diagrams, which involve derivatives of the disorder correlator at the non-analytic point, are naively "ambiguous''. We examine several routes out of this dilemma, which lead to a unique renormalizable field-theory at 2-loop order. It is also the only theory consistent with the potentiality of the problem. The beta-function differs from previous work and the one at depinning by novel "anomalous terms''. For interfaces and random bond disorder we find a roughness exponent zeta = 0.20829804 epsilon + 0.006858 epsilon^2, epsilon = 4-d. For random field disorder we find zeta = epsilon/3 and compute universal amplitudes to order epsilon^2. For periodic systems we evaluate the universal amplitude of the 2-point function. We also clarify the dependence of universal amplitudes on the boundary conditions at large scale. All predictions are in good agreement with numerical and exact results, and an improvement over one loop. Finally we calculate higher correlation functions, which turn out to be equivalent to those at depinning to leading order in epsilon.Comment: 42 pages, 41 figure
