The Poor and Marginalized Among Us: Contingent Faculty in Jesuit Universities

Faculty of institutions of higher learning have an opportunity to discuss, debate,and discern how to create workplaces that are just and inclusive.As members of Jesuit institutions, wehave a moral obligation to do so. How, then, can Jesuit universities justify the poor treatment of contingent faculty, who are now a majority not just in our institutions but in the country as a whole? Tenure-track employment is a fading tradition in universities throughout the United States. The data also show that non-tenure-track faculty, particularly the growing number of part-time adjunct faculty, constitute a population of marginalized, often poor,employees working alongside more privileged colleagues. Furthermore, the data show that the burden of inequality falls more heavily on women and people of color. How do Jesuit values and the mission statements of Jesuit universities guide us in this situation? How do Catholic social teaching principles help us to see and articulate the current situation more clearly, and find a path to more just and equitable employment in Jesuit higher education

Experiments in Experience:Towards an Alignment of Research through Design and John Dewey’s Pragmatism

This article explores John Dewey’s theories of inquiry, communication and existence in relation to design inquiry or, more particularly, research which incorporates design practice. Held in combination, these theories are seen to offer a unique approach to knowledge. This approach, it is argued, can be readily appropriated within existing methodological formulations of design research. By way of demonstration, I conclude the article by outlining a number of key features of Dewey’s theories, which are seen to hold the potential to enrich the epistemological basis of design inquiry as a research approach

Strategies Used by Employment Service Providers in the Job Development Process: Are they consistent with what employers want?

Historically, the role of job developers employed in the state/federal vocational rehabilitation program and the larger network of community-based rehabilitation programs has been to identify and secure paid employment for individuals with disabilities, particularly those with significant disabilities. This technical report describes the results of a study of job development/job placement professionals' strategies in the employment process, and compares these results to employer perceptions of the employment process from recent literature. The report also identifies implications for job development/placement practice based on this comparative analysis

Fungal Fimbriae: Their Structure And Distribution

The cells of Ustilago violacea, the anther smut fungus, extrude numerous hair-like appendages termed fimbriae. They have been shown to be similar to bacterial pili in that they are flexuous, proteinaceous fibrils, having a helical structure, a diameter of 7 nm and a variable length--often exceeding 15 (mu)m. Fimbriae were removed from cells by mechanical or thermal means. The isolated fimbriae were (a) chemically characterized; (b) injected into rabbits to obtain an antifimbrial antiserum (=AU). Fimbriae were found to consist of protein subunits of 74,000 daltons molecular weight with no detectable carbohydrate moiety. The protein was found to reassociate readily into fibrils of normal dimensions upon dialysis, and the reassociated fimbriae could be reattached to cells. Fimbrial protein was very resistant to thermal, or chemical treatments, maintaining both structural and antigenic integrity. The size of the fimbrial gene was estimated by UV mapping to be 2270 base pairs, only 17% larger than the 1944 base pairs needed to code for a 74,000 dalton protein. The antiserum AU agglutinated fimbriated but not defimbriated cells and was used as a test for the presence of fimbriae.;The presence of fimbriae on other fungi was examined by both direct EM observation and by serological screening for antigens responding to AU and to a similar antiserum raised against the fimbriae of Rhodotorula rubra. Visible fibrils resembling the fimbriae of U. violacea were seen on all tested smut fungi, with one exception, and on most basidiomycetous yeasts. Much shorter fibrils of similar diameter (6-10 nm) were observed on the surface of virtually all tested non-basidiomycetous fungi. Agglutination and immunofluorescence tests confirmed that the vast majority of the tested fungi possessed surface antigens which reacted with either one or both antisera.;It is concluded that fimbrial proteins are present on the surfaces of most fungi, rather than being restricted to smut fungi. It appears that the protein involved is highly conserved, though some differences in the antigenic region were detected. The possible functions of such fimbrial proteins are discussed

In this note, we characterize the products of simplicial generators for the Chow ring of a loopless matroid, extending a result of Backman, Eur, and Simpson. We prove that the stable intersection of a collection of tropical hyperplanes centered at the origin with the Bergman fan of a matroid is the Bergman fan of the dual of a certain Rado matroid.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figure

A Limnological Study of Ricks Pond and the Gulpha Creek Drainage in Garland County, Arkansas

A limnological investigation of Ricks Pond and the Gulpha Creek drainage of Garland County, Arkansas was conducted between 1 June 1978, and 21 August 1978. Water samples taken from ten stations on three different dates indicated that the stream and pond systems were typical in water quality characteristics of other small, high gradient streams and impoundments in the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas. In Ricks Pond, thermal stratification occurred along with the development of an oxygen deficient zone below a depth of one meter. Other water quality parameters indicated that Ricks Pond is a moderately productive ecosystem, with the productivity limited by the nitrogen species. The fecal coliform bacterial counts were very low, indicating no direct input of excessive amounts of fecal matter into the system during the present study. However, a Hot Springs city sewer line runs through the pond, and two manholes emerge from the pond\u27s surface. The possibility exists that this sewer line could discharge raw sewage into Ricks Pond during periods of high water. A biological investigation was also conducted in the study area, and lists of the phytoplankton, periphyton, higher aquatic vegetation, zooplankton, benthic macroinvertebrates, and fishes are presented. Twenty-seven species of fishes were collected from the Gulpha Creek drainage, and no rare or endangered forms were found. Ricks Pond is best-suited for the establishment of a put- and-take fishery for channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus. The following recommendations were made for the establishment of such a fishery: (1) Renovation of the pond by draining and deepening it; (2) Removal of the sewer line from the pond; (3) Stocking of catchable size channel catfish at the rate of approximately 300-400 pounds per acre; (4) Periodic monitoring of the water quality

Infection and Twiddler Syndrome in a Dog With Addison\u27s Disease, Complete Heart Block, and Wandering Artificial Pacemakers

Third-degree heart block developed in an obese seven-year-old dog with adrenal cortical failure. After three days of extensive medial therapy and use of a temporary transvenous pacemaker, a transthoracic permanent pacemaker was implanted in the usual paracostal location. After two years of normal function, the pulse generator suddenly migrated to a ventral location in the flank and became surrounded by an abscess. Intermittent pacing failure ensued. Medical therapy with antibiotics failed to eliminate infection until the infected pacemaker and site were excised surgically. A new pacemaker was placed on the opposite side and functioned well for two months. Subsequent migration and rotation of the new pacemaker led to spiral twisting of the lead and dislodgment of the corkscrew electrode from the myocardium in a syndrome analogous to Twiddler\u27s syndrome in man. The dog presently is 10 years old and asymptomatic with a nonpaced ventricular rhythm of 60 beats per minute and an usual chest radiograph
