From alchemy to Artaudian 'digital double' : a practical exploration in digital scenography

This research seeks to better understand the position of the contemporary stage phenomenon ‘The Digital Double’ within the theories of Antonin Artaud. This phenomenon can be defined as; the mediated form, or presence, of a physical performer, generated upon the stage. Within the context of this study ‘The Digital Double’ has existed as an infrared generated digital entity. This investigation has been undertaken utilising the methodology of Practice as Research and has accumulated a number of performative artefacts prominently featuring the use of ‘The Digital Double’ in order to establish a tacit understanding of the theories of Artaud. I shall be drawing upon interviews conducted with the performers and in order to enrich my understanding of the interactive process within their experience performing alongside ‘The Digital Double’.The practical research of this thesis has been contextualised alongside a thorough examination of Artaudian literature; scenographic theory and the work of fellow practitioners of interactive technology. I have also carried out a brief examination of the Alchemical philosophy in order to elicit a greater understanding of the inspiration of Artaud.Throughout the duration of this research, I argue that the role of technologists researcher is akin to that of Artaudian ‘Producer’. I argue that the ‘Digital Double’ as a contemporary stage phenomenon engages with the core concepts of Artaud’s theatrical model. Through an exploration of the metaphor of Alchemy a deeper understanding of Artaud's theories and inspiration is generated; from this, we can sit ‘The Digital Double’ and strengthen its position as an Artaudian theatrical device

In recent years, considerable thought and study have been given to the use of chromized articles in place of chromium stainless steel articles. The present extensive application of chromizing, indeed, helps greatly to conserve this valuable metal

Quasi-experimental analysis of new mining developments as a driver of deforestation in Zambia

Mining is a vital part of the global, and many national, economies. Mining also has the potential to drive extensive land cover change, including deforestation, with impacts reaching far from the mine itself. Understanding the amount of deforestation associated with mining is important for conservationists, governments, mining companies, and consumers, yet accurate quantification is rare. We applied statistical matching, a quasi-experimental methodology, along with Bayesian hierarchical generalized linear models to assess the impact on deforestation of new mining developments in Zambia from 2000 to present. Zambia is a globally significant producer of minerals and mining contributes ~ 10% of its gross domestic product and ~ 77% of its exports. Despite extensive deforestation in mining impacted land, we found no evidence that any of the 22 mines we analysed increased deforestation compared with matched control sites. The extent forest lost was therefore no different than would likely have happened without the mines being present due to other drivers of deforestation in Zambia. This suggests previous assessments based on correlative methodologies may overestimate the deforestation impact of mining. However, mining can have a range of impacts on society, biodiversity, and the local environment that are not captured by our analysis

    Ohio Landlord-Tenant Reform Revisited

The gentle readers may be surprised by the analogy suggested between the reform of landlord-tenant law and the experience of Alice and the Queen. However, the events surrounding the enactment of Amended Substitute Senate Bill 103 were as perplexing as those in Lewis Carroll\u27s story. Those opposing real reform, principally the real estate industry, were successful in weakening the proposed legislation. Consequently, the primary goal of the sponsors of landlord-tenant legislation in Ohio was not met by the legislation finally enacted. As this Article will demonstrate, the interpretation of the Act by the courts of Ohio has proven true the claims of some of the proponents of the reform legislation who likened the final enacted bill to the March Hare: a little bit late and somewhat confusing. The purpose of this Article is to review this legislation and its interpretation by the Ohio courts over the past thirteen years. Like Alice, the gentle reader may conclude that despite all this running, everything\u27s just as it was. For this reason, the authors will propose legislative amendments to the Act necessary to bring into more equitable balance the landlord-tenant relationship in Ohio
