    The Impact of Intelligent Aiding for Multiple Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Schedule Management

    There is increasing interest in designing systems such that the current many-to-one ratio of operators to unmanned vehicles (UVs) can be inverted. Instead of lower-level tasks performed by today’s UV teams, the sole operator would focus on high-level supervisory control tasks. A key challenge in the design of such single-operator systems will be the need to minimize periods of excessive workload that arise when critical tasks for several UVs occur simultaneously. Thus some kind of decision support is needed that facilitates an operator’s ability to evaluate different action alternatives for managing a multiple UV mission schedule in real-time. This paper describes two decision support experiments that attempted to provide UAV operators with multivariate scheduling assistance, with mixed results. Those automated decision support tools that provided more local, as opposed to global, visual recommendations produced superior performance, suggesting that meta-information displays could saturate operators and reduce performance.This research was sponsored by Boeing Phantom Work and Mitre, Inc

    We reformulate the Hamiltonian approach to lattice gauge theories such that, at the classical level, the gauge group does not act canonically, but instead as a Poisson-Lie group. At the quantum level, it then gets promoted to a quantum group gauge symmetry. The theory depends on two parameters - the deformation parameter λ\lambda and the lattice spacing aa. We show that the system of Kogut and Susskind is recovered when λ0\lambda \rightarrow 0, while QCD is recovered in the continuum limit (for any λ\lambda).     In this work, the Z3_3-graded differential geometry of the quantum plane is constructed. The corresponding quantum Lie algebra and its Hopf algebra structure are obtained. The dual algebra, i.e. universal enveloping algebra of the quantum plane is explicitly constructed and an isomorphism between the quantum Lie algebra and the dual algebra is given.Comment: 17 page

    Controls on Dissolved Silicon Isotopes along the US GEOTRACES Eastern Pacific Zonal Transect (GP16)

    The distribution of dissolved silicon isotopes (δ30Si) was examined along the US GEOTRACES East Pacific Zonal Transect (GP16) extending from Peru to Tahiti (10°S and 15°S latitude). Surface waters in the subtropical gyre displayed high δ30Si due to strong utilization of silicic acid (DSi). In contrast, surface waters close to the Peruvian coast where upwelling prevailed were less depleted and only moderately fractionated. δ30Si of water masses along the transect were compared with the results of an Optimum Multiparameter Analysis that quantified the fractional contributions of endmember water masses in each sample. Strong admixture of intermediate waters obscured the expected heavy isotopic signatures of Subantarctic Mode Water and Antarctic Intermediate Water. Isotope values were nearly homogenous below 2000 m (Average: +1.3 ± 0.1 ‰, 1 s.d.) despite the 25 μmol kg‐1 range in the DSi content among water masses. This homogeneity confirms prior observations and model results that predict nearly constant δ30Si values of +1.0 to +1.2 ‰ for Pacific deep waters with [DSi] > 100 μmol kg‐1. Waters above the East Pacific Rise (EPR) influenced by hydrothermal activity showed a small increase in [DSi] together with dissolved iron, but overall stations close to the EPR were slightly depleted in [DSi] (3 to 6 μmol kg‐1) with no significant shift in δ30Si compared to adjacent waters. Hydrothermal [DSi] appears to precipitate within the conduit of the EPR or upon contact with cold seawater resulting in a negligible influence of hydrothermal fluids on δ30Si in deep water.     Successful Surgical Treatment of a Patient with a Solitary Asymptomatic Cardiac Metastasis from Breast Cancer, Identified by Elevated Tumor Markers and Circulating Tumor Cells

    Indroduction: Cardiac metastases are a not infrequent autopsy finding in patients dying of metastatic cancer, but are less commonly diagnosed during life (1). Although the autopsy incidence of cardiac metastases ranges may be as high as 25%, solitary cardiac metastases in the absence of metastatic involvement of other organs are rare (2).Case Presentation: We report here the case of a 66-year old woman with a history of bilateral breast cancer, where a solitary metastasis in the right atrium was successfully resected.Conclusion: In the absence of any symptoms or clinical findings on physical examination, the presence of metastatic disease was first suggested by the detection of elevated tumor markers and circulating tumor cells during routine follow up after treatment for early stage breast cancer.

    Proton-transfer pathways in the mitochondrial S. cerevisiae cytochrome c oxidase

    In cytochrome c oxidase (CytcO) reduction of O2 to water is linked to uptake of eight protons from the negative side of the membrane: four are substrate protons used to form water and four are pumped across the membrane. In bacterial oxidases, the substrate protons are taken up through the K and the D proton pathways, while the pumped protons are transferred through the D pathway. On the basis of studies with CytcO isolated from bovine heart mitochondria, it was suggested that in mitochondrial CytcOs the pumped protons are transferred though a third proton pathway, the H pathway, rather than through the D pathway. Here, we studied these reactions in S. cerevisiae CytcO, which serves as a model of the mammalian counterpart. We analyzed the effect of mutations in the D (Asn99Asp and Ile67Asn) and H pathways (Ser382Ala and Ser458Ala) and investigated the kinetics of electron and proton transfer during the reaction of the reduced CytcO with O2. No effects were observed with the H pathway variants while in the D pathway variants the functional effects were similar to those observed with the R. sphaeroides CytcO. The data indicate that the S. cerevisiae CytcO uses the D pathway for proton uptake and presumably also for proton pumping

Perturbative analysis of the q-deformed QED at the classical level is presented and gauge fixing aˋ\grave{a} la BRST is discussed.     Representation-theoretic derivation of the Temperley-Lieb-Martin algebras

    Explicit expressions for the Temperley-Lieb-Martin algebras, i.e., the quotients of the Hecke algebra that admit only representations corresponding to Young diagrams with a given maximum number of columns (or rows), are obtained, making explicit use of the Hecke algebra representation theory.     Iron, silicate, and light co-limitation of three Southern Ocean diatom species

    The effect of combined iron, silicate, and light co-limitation was investigated in the three diatom species Actinocyclus sp. Ehrenberg, Chaetoceros dichaeta Ehrenberg, and Chaetoceros debilis Cleve, isolated from the Southern Ocean (SO). Growth of all species was co-limited by iron and silicate, reflected in a significant increase in the number of cell divisions compared to the control. Lowest relative Si uptake and drastic frustule malformation was found under iron and silicate co-limitation in C. dichaeta, while Si limitation in general caused cell elongation in both Chaetoceros species. Higher light intensities similar to SO surface conditions showed a negative impact on growth of C. dichaeta and Actinocyclus sp. and no effect on C. debilis. This is in contrast to the assumed light limitation of SO diatoms due to deep wind driven mixing.
