Phenylethynyl terminated reactive oligomer
A composition of matter having the general structure: ##STR1## (wherein X is F, Cl, or NO.sub.2, and Y is CO, SO.sub.2 or C(CF.sub.3).sub.2) is employed to terminate a nucleophilic reagent, resulting in the exclusive production of phenylethynyl terminated reactive oligomers which display unique thermal characteristics. A reactive diluent having the general structure: ##STR2## (wherein R is any aliphatic or aromatic moiety) is employed to decrease the melt viscosity of a phenylethynyl terminated reactive oligomer and to subsequently react therewith to provide a thermosetting material of enhanced density. These materials have features which make them attractive candidates for use as composite matrices and adhesives

Phenylethynyl endcapping reagents and reactive diluents
A phenylethynyl composition which can be used to endcap nucleophilic species is employed in the production of phenylethynyl terminated reactive oligomers exclusively. These phenylethynyl terminated reactive oligomers display unique thermal characteristics, as exemplified by the model compound, 4-phenoxy 4'-phenylethynylbenzophenone, which is relatively stable at 200 C, but reacts at 350 C. In addition, a reactive diluent was prepared which decreases the melt viscosity of the phenylethynyl terminated oligomers and subsequently reacts therewith to increase density of the resulting thermoset. The novelty of this invention resides in the phenylethynyl composition used to terminate a nucleophilic reagent, resulting in the exclusive production of phenylethynyl terminated reactive oligomers which display unique thermal characteristics. A reactive diluent was also employed to decrease the melt viscosity of a phenylethynyl terminated reactive oligomer and to subsequently react therewith to increase the crosslink density of the resulting thermoset. These materials have features which make them attractive candidates for use as composite matrices and adhesives
Differential systems associated with tableaux over Lie algebras
We give an account of the construction of exterior differential systems based
on the notion of tableaux over Lie algebras as developed in [Comm. Anal. Geom
14 (2006), 475-496; math.DG/0412169]. The definition of a tableau over a Lie
algebra is revisited and extended in the light of the formalism of the Spencer
cohomology; the question of involutiveness for the associated systems and their
prolongations is addressed; examples are discussed.Comment: 16 pages; to appear in: "Symmetries and Overdetermined Systems of

The Open Guidebook Approach: Designs to Support Collaborative, Close-to-Practice Teacher Learning
Teacher learning to enact desirable yet knotty teaching practices is a complex challenge that requires innovative support. Most materials intended to support professional learning fall short and do not leverage the benefits of modern technologies to address historic barriers at school, district, and broader systemic levels. We provide a synthetic literature review of teacher learning, identify impediments, and suggest a new, technology-enabled approach to the co-design of teacher collaborative learning materials enabled by open technologies, a revolutionary mindset enabled by open technologies. We frame the Open Guidebook Approach (OGA) in terms of five values: collaboration, practicality, continuous improvement, accessibility, and adaptability. We illustrate OGA with an ongoing project, called “Making Meaning,” to support teachers learning to enact equitable practices, drawing on concepts, indicators, and observation rubrics from the Classroom Assessment of Sociocultural Interactions. Supporting teachers to transform their teaching is our objective, OGA via open technologies is the innovative means, and Making Meaning illustrates our arguments. We conclude with recommendations and ongoing questions
Site of Prenylation Reaction in Synthesis of Phylloquinone (Vitamin K1) by Spinach Chloroplasts
In spinach chloroplasts, 1,4-dihydroxy-2-naphthoate is prenylated by phytyldiphosphate and subsequently methylated by S-adenosylmethionine to form phylloquinol. The site of the prenylation reaction is the chloroplast envelope membrane
Phenylethynyl amine
Four phenylethynyl amine compounds--3 and 4-aminophenoxy-4'-phenylethynylbenzophenone, and 3 and 4-amino-4'-phenylethynylbenzophenone--were readily prepared and were used to endcap imide oligomers. Phenylethynyl-terminated amide acid oligomers and phenylethynyl-terminated imide oligomers with various molecular weights and compositions were prepared and characterized. These oligomers were cured at 300.degree. C. to 400.degree. C. to provide crosslinked polyimides with excellent solvent resistance, high strength and modulus and good high temperature properties. Adhesive panels, composites, films and moldings from these phenylethynyl terminated imide oligomers gave excellent mechanical performance
First-principles calculations of the structural, electronic, vibrational and magnetic properties of C_{60} and C_{48}N_{12}: a comparative study
In this work, we perform first-principles calculations of the structural,
electronic, vibrational and magnetic properties of a novel azafullerene. Full geometrical optimization shows that is characterized by several distinguishing features: only
one nitrogen atom per pentagon, two nitrogen atoms preferentially sitting in
one hexagon, symmetry, 6 unique nitrogen-carbon and 9 unique
carbon-carbon bond lengths. The highest occupied molecular orbital of is a doubly degenerate level of symmetry and its
lowest unoccupied molecular orbital is a nondegenerate level of
symmetry. Vibrational frequency analysis predicts that has in total 116 vibrational modes: 58 infrared-active and 58
Raman-active modes. is also characterized by 8
and 2 NMR spectral signals. Compared to , shows an enhanced third-order optical
nonlinearities which implies potential applications in optical limiting and
photonics.Comment: a long version of our manuscript submitted to J.Chem.Phy

On the G_2 bundle of a Riemannian 4-manifold
We study the natural G_2 structure on the unit tangent sphere bundle SM of
any given orientable Riemannian 4-manifold M, as it was discovered in
\cite{AlbSal}. A name is proposed for the space. We work in the context of
metric connections, or so called geometry with torsion, and describe the
components of the torsion of the connection which imply certain equations of
the G_2 structure. This article is devoted to finding the G_2-torsion tensors
which classify our structure according to the theory in \cite{FerGray}.Comment: Completely improved, new examples, 26 page
