The deformation complex is a homotopy invariant of a homotopy algebra

To a homotopy algebra one may associate its deformation complex, which is naturally a differential graded Lie algebra. We show that infinity quasi-isomorphic homotopy algebras have L-infinity quasi-isomorphic deformation complexes by an explicit construction.Comment: A revised version. The final version will appear in the volume "Current Developments and Retrospectives in Lie Theory

Aerobic Fitness Benefits of a Community-Based Activity Program that Promotes Functional Outcomes for People with Spinal Cord Injury

The aim of the work presented in this thesis was to classify physical activities performed as part of a community-embedded, activity-based restorative therapy (ABRT) program for people with a spinal cord injury (SCI). This thesis also aimed to determine whether the intensity and duration of activity performed by participants during their regular ABRT were sufficient to meet current American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) physical activity (PA) guidelines for developing and maintaining cardiorespiratory fitness and general health. Twenty-one regular clients of an Australian ABRT program (Walk On®) had their heart rate (HR) recorded and an observational time-and-motion analysis conducted during their regular therapy sessions over two successive one-week periods. The time and motion analysis included classification of each movement (1-9 schema), and ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) given by both the client and an independent observer for each exercise movement performed during a session of approximately two hours. Clients also completed a multi-stage, sub-maximal assessment on an arm crank ergometer followed by progressive, incremental exercise to volitional fatigue to determine submaximal and peak oxygen consumptions (VO2). The HR and VO2 relationship during arm cranking was then used to estimate VO2 values from HR recorded during ABRT sessions. The average intensity and total duration of ABRT exercises that clients performed as part of their regular therapy was compared with The ACSM PA guidelines for improving cardiorespiratory fitness and general health. The weekly average intensity x total duration of therapy sessions were statistically contrasted with ‘cut-points’ for “moderate” and “vigorous” exercise using percentage of HR maximum (%HRmax), percentage of heart rate reserve (%HRR), percentage of VO2 reserve (%VO2R) and self-reported RPE. For individuals with paraplegia (n=5) and tetraplegia (n=16) combined, arm cranking VO2peak was 13.2 ± 4.2 ml•kg-1•min-1 achieved at 38.4 ± 11.8 W power output, and there was no significant difference between the two groups. When comparing total volume (intensity x duration x frequency) of physical activities comprising ABRT, there were four results that indicated that participant activity was significantly below the guidelines for improving and maintaining health (i.e. moderate and vigorous absolute %HRmax and moderate and vigorous %HRR were below ACSM ‘cut points’). By contrast there was one intensity measure that significantly exceeded ACSM guidelines (moderate RPE was above RPE ‘cut points’). Finally, there were three variables (moderate and vigorous %VO2R and vigorous RPE) for which no definitive conclusion could be drawn as to whether average weekly ABRT was of sufficient intensity and duration to meet the current guidelines. Twelve of the 21 participants achieved > 500 MET•min-1 of activity over the two, one-week periods that were measured (mean: 482 ± 247 MET•min-1 per week), but this result was not statistically significant (p = 0.76). There was poor correlation between HR and either participant RPE (R2 = 0.08, p < 0.01) or observer RPE (R2 = 0.12, p < 0.01). This was consistent across each individual exercise classified with an activity code. This study demonstrated that ABRT was generally unlikely to be of sufficient intensity and duration to satisfy current ACSM physical activity guidelines for developing and maintaining cardiorespiratory fitness and general health in individuals with SCI, however these results were not consistent across all clients in the study. The different activities used as part of ABRT were classified and mean values were determined for their intensity and duration. These data suggest that, based on sufficient intensity and duration of weekly exercise, a community-based ABRT program may not meet current guidelines for health. Results highlighted the need for additional ‘dose-potent’ physical activity either within current ABRT programs or gained via supplementary methods

Business Management Programme as a Driver of Graduate Employability: A Critical Analysis of Perceptions of Students at a Selected University

The main purpose of this study was to establish and critically analyse the perceptions of final year students on the extent to which the business management programme enhances graduate employability in Botswana. Extant literature alludes to the fact that ensuring employability connotes a situation where a graduate of a curriculum is not only able to gain employment but also to maintain that employment. The study used the CareerEDGE model to explain the anatomy of employability as well as to articulate the extent of preparedness for employment that is required for a Business Management student to be able to meet the requirements of the labour market. Using a selected university, a simple random sampling strategy was used to select 92 students to participate in the study. A descriptive research strategy that employed a structured questionnaire for data collection was used. Results of the study showed that studied most of the final year Business Management degree students were of the view that the curriculum enabled them to be employed in two main sectors namely; private sector and public sector specifically in teaching jobs rather than in other sectors such as mining, commerce and agriculture. These results therefore showed that the business management programme is effective as a driver of employability in relevant business sectors, meaning that a relook at the curriculum may be needed for purposes of enhancing it. Twistor theory of symplectic manifolds

This article is a contribution to the understanding of the geometry of the twistor space of a symplectic manifold. We consider the bundle ZZ with fibre the Siegel domain Sp(2n,R)/U(n) existing over any given symplectic 2n-manifold M. Then, after recalling the construction of the almost complex structure induced on ZZ by a symplectic connection on M, we study and find some specific properties of both. We show a few examples of twistor spaces, develop the interplay with the symplectomorphisms of M, find some results about a natural almost Hermitian structure on ZZ and finally prove its n+1-holomorphic completeness. We end by proving a vanishing theorem about the Penrose transform.Comment: 34 page

Twistor spaces of generalized complex structures

The twistor construction is applied for obtaining examples of generalized complex structures (in the sense of N. Hitchin) that are not induced by a complex or a symplectic structure.Comment: revised version, 17 pages; corrected typos, added references, minor stylistic changes in the expositio

Looking for genre: the use of structural features during search tasks with Wikipedia

    Get PDF
This paper reports on our task-based observational, logged, questionnaire study and analysis of ocular behavior pertaining to the interaction of structural features of text in Wikipedia using eye tracking. We set natural and realistic tasks searching Wikipedia online focusing on examining which features and strategies (skimming or scanning) were the most important for the participants to complete their tasks. Our research, carried out on a group of 30 participants, highlighted their interactions with the structural areas within Wikipedia articles, the visual cues and features perceived during the searching of the Wiki text. We collected questionnaire and ocular behavior (fixation metrics) data to highlight the ways in which people view the features in the articles. We found that our participants’ extensively interacted with layout features, such as tables, titles, bullet lists, contents lists, information boxes, and references. The eye tracking results showed that participants used the format and layout features and they also highlighted them as important. They were able to navigate to useful information consistently, and they were an effective means of locating relevant information for the completion of their tasks with some success. This work presents results which contribute to the long-term goals of studying the features for genre and theoretical perception research
