Special treatment reduces helium permeation of glass in vacuum systems
Internal surfaces of the glass component of a vacuum system are exposed to cesium in gaseous form to reduce helium permeation. The cesium gas is derived from decomposition of cesium nitrate through heating. Several minutes of exposure of the internal surfaces of the glass vessel are sufficient to complete the treatment

Is there a fifth international radiocarbon intercomparison (VIRI)?
The issue of comparability of measurements (and thus bias, accuracy, and precision of measurement) from diverse laboratories is one which has been the focus of some attention both within the radiocarbon community and the wider user communities. As a result, the C-14 community has undertaken a widescale, far-reaching, and evolving program of inter- comparisons, to the benefit of laboratories and users alike. The benefit to the users is, however, indirect, since the C-14 intercomparisons have not been used to generate "league tables" of performance, but rather to allow individual laboratories to check procedures and modify them as required. The historical progression of C-14 laboratory intercomparisons from the Third (TIRI, completed in 1995, Gulliksen and Scott 1995) and Fourth (FIRI, completed in 2000, Scott 2003; Boaretto et al. 2000; Bryant et al. 2002) suggests that a Fifth (VIRI) should also be expected. Binary Decision Diagrams: from Tree Compaction to Sampling
Any Boolean function corresponds with a complete full binary decision tree.
This tree can in turn be represented in a maximally compact form as a direct
acyclic graph where common subtrees are factored and shared, keeping only one
copy of each unique subtree. This yields the celebrated and widely used
structure called reduced ordered binary decision diagram (ROBDD). We propose to
revisit the classical compaction process to give a new way of enumerating
ROBDDs of a given size without considering fully expanded trees and the
compaction step. Our method also provides an unranking procedure for the set of
ROBDDs. As a by-product we get a random uniform and exhaustive sampler for
ROBDDs for a given number of variables and size
Evidence for anthropogenic <sup>14</sup>C-enrichment in estuarine waters adjacent to the North Sea
[1] The isotopic composition (d13C and D14C) of high
molecular weight dissolved organic carbon (HMW DOC)
was studied in the Tyne and Tweed estuaries, NE England.
Despite significant removal of terrigenous HMW DOC in
the low salinity regions (S < 15), D14C remained modern
with little variation around 115%. This lack of apparent age
discrimination was attributed to either non-oxidative
removal or the absence of a significant proportion of old
refractory C in the HMW DOC pool. At S < 15, we
observed seaward increases in d13C and D14C. With no
documented local 14C inputs, we attributed non-bomb
related 14C-enrichment at S < 15 to a possible ‘lingering
effect’ of distal anthropogenic sources in near-coastal North
Sea HMW DOC. Given the global distribution of potential
sources, we propose that anthropogenic 14C should be
considered in assigning ages of DOC pools in near-coastal
waters and suggest its possible use as a tracer for DOC
transformations
Defying jet-gas alignment in two radio galaxies at z~2 with extended light profiles: Similarities to brightest cluster galaxies
We report the detection of extended warm ionized gas in two powerful
high-redshift radio galaxies, NVSS J210626-314003 at z=2.10 and TXS 2353-003 at
z=1.49, that does not appear to be associated with the radio jets. This is
contrary to what would be expected from the alignment effect, a characteristic
feature of distant, powerful radio galaxies at z> 0.6. The gas also has smaller
velocity gradients and line widths than most other high-z radio galaxies with
similar data. Both galaxies are part of a systematic study of 50 high-redshift
radio galaxies with SINFONI, and are the only two that are characterized by the
presence of high surface-brightness gas not associated with the jet axis and by
the absence of such gas aligned with the jet. Both galaxies are spatially
resolved with ISAAC broadband imaging covering the rest-frame R band, and have
extended wings that cannot be attributed to line contamination. We argue that
the gas and stellar properties of these galaxies are more akin to gas-rich
brightest cluster galaxies in cool-core clusters than the general population of
high-redshift radio galaxies at z>2. In support of this interpretation, one of
our sources, TXS 2353-003, for which we have H\alpha\ narrowband imaging, is
associated with an overdensity of candidate H\alpha\ emitters by a factor of 8
relative to the field at z=1.5. We discuss possible scenarios of the
evolutionary state of these galaxies and the nature of their emission line gas
within the context of cyclical AGN feedback.Comment: A&A in pres
