Performance of the Lester battery charger in electric vehicles
Tests are performed on an improved battery charger. The primary purpose of the testing is to develop test methodologies for battery charger evaluation. Tests are developed to characterize the charger in terms of its charge algorithm and to assess the effects of battery initial state of charge and temperature on charger and battery efficiency. Tests show this charger to be a considerable improvement in the state of the art for electric vehicle chargers
LUMIS Interactive graphics operating instructions and system specifications
The LUMIS program has designed an integrated geographic information system to assist program managers and planning groups in metropolitan regions. Described is the system designed to interactively interrogate a data base, display graphically a portion of the region enclosed in the data base, and perform cross tabulations of variables within each city block, block group, or census tract. The system is designed to interface with U. S. Census DIME file technology, but can accept alternative districting conventions. The system is described on three levels: (1) introduction to the systems's concept and potential applications; (2) the method of operating the system on an interactive terminal; and (3) a detailed system specification for computer facility personnel
Binary Decision Diagrams: from Tree Compaction to Sampling
Any Boolean function corresponds with a complete full binary decision tree.
This tree can in turn be represented in a maximally compact form as a direct
acyclic graph where common subtrees are factored and shared, keeping only one
copy of each unique subtree. This yields the celebrated and widely used
structure called reduced ordered binary decision diagram (ROBDD). We propose to
revisit the classical compaction process to give a new way of enumerating
ROBDDs of a given size without considering fully expanded trees and the
compaction step. Our method also provides an unranking procedure for the set of
ROBDDs. As a by-product we get a random uniform and exhaustive sampler for
ROBDDs for a given number of variables and size
Calibrated Sub-Bundles in Non-Compact Manifolds of Special Holonomy
This paper is a continuation of math.DG/0408005. We first construct special
Lagrangian submanifolds of the Ricci-flat Stenzel metric (of holonomy SU(n)) on
the cotangent bundle of S^n by looking at the conormal bundle of appropriate
submanifolds of S^n. We find that the condition for the conormal bundle to be
special Lagrangian is the same as that discovered by Harvey-Lawson for
submanifolds in R^n in their pioneering paper. We also construct calibrated
submanifolds in complete metrics with special holonomy G_2 and Spin(7)
discovered by Bryant and Salamon on the total spaces of appropriate bundles
over self-dual Einstein four manifolds. The submanifolds are constructed as
certain subbundles over immersed surfaces. We show that this construction
requires the surface to be minimal in the associative and Cayley cases, and to
be (properly oriented) real isotropic in the coassociative case. We also make
some remarks about using these constructions as a possible local model for the
intersection of compact calibrated submanifolds in a compact manifold with
special holonomy.Comment: 20 pages; for Revised Version: Minor cosmetic changes, some

Multiband theory of quantum-dot quantum wells: Dark excitons, bright excitons, and charge separation in heteronanostructures
Electron, hole, and exciton states of multishell CdS/HgS/CdS quantum-dot
quantum well nanocrystals are determined by use of a multiband theory that
includes valence-band mixing, modeled with a 6-band Luttinger-Kohn Hamiltonian,
and nonparabolicity of the conduction band. The multiband theory correctly
describes the recently observed dark-exciton ground state and the lowest,
optically active, bright-exciton states. Charge separation in pair states is
identified. Previous single-band theories could not describe these states or
account for charge separation.Comment: 10 pages of ReVTex, 6 ps figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Skolem-type difference sets for cycle systems
Cyclic m-cycle systems of order v are constructed for all m greater than or equal to 3, and all v = 1(mod 2m). This result has been settled previously by several authors. In this paper, we provide a different solution, as a consequence of a more general result, which handles all cases using similar methods and which also allows us to prove necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a cyclic m-cycle system of K-v - F for all m greater than or equal to 3, and all v = 2(mod 2m)
NASA space geodesy program: Catalogue of site information
This is the first edition of the NASA Space Geodesy Program: Catalogue of Site Information. This catalogue supersedes all previous versions of the Crustal Dynamics Project: Catalogue of Site Information, last published in May 1989. This document is prepared under the direction of the Space Geodesy and Altimetry Projects Office (SGAPO), Code 920.1, Goddard Space Flight Center. SGAPO has assumed the responsibilities of the Crustal Dynamics Project, which officially ended December 31, 1991. The catalog contains information on all NASA supported sites as well as sites from cooperating international partners. This catalog is designed to provde descriptions and occupation histories of high-accuracy geodetic measuring sites employing space-related techniques. The emphasis of the catalog has been in the past, and continues to be with this edition, station information for facilities and remote locations utilizing the Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR), Lunar Laser Ranging (LLR), and Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) techniques. With the proliferation of high-quality Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers and Doppler Orbitography and Radiopositioning Integrated by Satellite (DORIS) transponders, many co-located at established SLR and VLBI observatories, the requirement for accurate station and localized survey information for an ever broadening base of scientists and engineers has been recognized. It is our objective to provide accurate station information to scientific groups interested in these facilities
Numerical Linked-Cluster Algorithms. I. Spin systems on square, triangular, and kagome lattices
We discuss recently introduced numerical linked-cluster (NLC) algorithms that
allow one to obtain temperature-dependent properties of quantum lattice models,
in the thermodynamic limit, from exact diagonalization of finite clusters. We
present studies of thermodynamic observables for spin models on square,
triangular, and kagome lattices. Results for several choices of clusters and
extrapolations methods, that accelerate the convergence of NLC, are presented.
We also include a comparison of NLC results with those obtained from exact
analytical expressions (where available), high-temperature expansions (HTE),
exact diagonalization (ED) of finite periodic systems, and quantum Monte Carlo
simulations. For many models and properties NLC results are substantially more
accurate than HTE and ED.Comment: 14 pages, 16 figures, as publishe

Cas9 interrogates DNA in discrete steps modulated by mismatches and supercoiling.
The CRISPR-Cas9 nuclease has been widely repurposed as a molecular and cell biology tool for its ability to programmably target and cleave DNA. Cas9 recognizes its target site by unwinding the DNA double helix and hybridizing a 20-nucleotide section of its associated guide RNA to one DNA strand, forming an R-loop structure. A dynamic and mechanical description of R-loop formation is needed to understand the biophysics of target searching and develop rational approaches for mitigating off-target activity while accounting for the influence of torsional strain in the genome. Here we investigate the dynamics of Cas9 R-loop formation and collapse using rotor bead tracking (RBT), a single-molecule technique that can simultaneously monitor DNA unwinding with base-pair resolution and binding of fluorescently labeled macromolecules in real time. By measuring changes in torque upon unwinding of the double helix, we find that R-loop formation and collapse proceed via a transient discrete intermediate, consistent with DNA:RNA hybridization within an initial seed region. Using systematic measurements of target and off-target sequences under controlled mechanical perturbations, we characterize position-dependent effects of sequence mismatches and show how DNA supercoiling modulates the energy landscape of R-loop formation and dictates access to states competent for stable binding and cleavage. Consistent with this energy landscape model, in bulk experiments we observe promiscuous cleavage under physiological negative supercoiling. The detailed description of DNA interrogation presented here suggests strategies for improving the specificity and kinetics of Cas9 as a genome engineering tool and may inspire expanded applications that exploit sensitivity to DNA supercoiling
