KGCS and ECS Local HMI Display Control System Engineer
My time here at KSC has involved creating and updating HMI displays to support Pad 39B and the Mobile Launcher. I also had the opportunity to be involved with testing PLC hardware for Electromagnetic interferences. This report explains in more detail of the steps involved in successfully completing these responsibilities I have been fortunate enough to be involved with
Reversing A Doodle
The radius r neighborhood of a set X, denoted Nr(X), is the collection of points within a distance r of X. We discuss some of the properties preserved by the radius r neighborhood in Rn. In particular, we find a collection of sets which have a unique pre-image when mapped under Nr. This problem has interesting ties to convex geometry
The Flying Diamond: A joined aircraft configuration design project, volume 1
The results of the analysis conducted on the Joined Wing Configuration study are presented. The joined wing configuration employs a conventional fuselage and incorporates two wings joined together near their tips to form a diamond shape in both plan view and front view. The arrangement of the lifting surfaces uses the rear wing as a horizontal tail and as a forward wing strut. The rear wing has its root at the tip of the vertical stabilizer and is structurally attached to the trailing edge of the forward wing. This arrangement of the two wings forms a truss structure which is inherently resistant to the aerodynamic bending loads generated during flight. This allows for a considerable reduction in the weight of the lifting surfaces. With smaller internal wing structures needed, the Joined Wing may employ thinner wings which are more suitable for supersonic and hypersonic flight, having less induced drag than conventional cantilever winged aircraft. Inherent in the Joined Wing is the capability of the generation of direct lift and side force which enhance the performance parameters
Podcasts United - Episode 1: Economic Mobility
This podcast examines the decrease in social and economic mobility in the United States and the effect it has on both the rich and the poor. Mobility has been decreased by a number of factors including funding based on property taxes, a changed interpretation of cultural fit and an overestimation of economic mobility by the general public. This decrease in mobility is apparent in society today but is not being realized by the public. In order to illustrate why this decreasing mobility is such an issue, we are going to analyze the reasons why it is happening and how it effects everyone in their own way

Improving The Quality of Subalpine Precipitation Measurements with Hydrometeor Information and A Hierarchical Bayesian Gauge Correction Model
A Bayesian machine learning method was used to produce a skillful precipitation gauge correction for an unshielded gauge in the subalpine forest below Niwot Ridge, Colorado. A U.S. Climate Reference Network (USCRN) gauge provided the “true” reference precipitation accumulation from which a gauge correction was developed. The difference in daily precipitation between the USCRN gauge and the unshielded gauge, integral to a precipitation record extending back to 1952, was modelled using hydrometeor characteristics, wind speed, and precipitation intensity and duration. Probability distributions of explanatory variables were estimated and used as likelihood information for a hierarchical Bayesian regression gauge correction (HBayeRGC) model. The HBayeRGC explains 86% of the unshielded gauge errors during an October 2013 to May 2015 gauge comparison period and provides a novel method for estimating precipitation gauge uncertainties. Error-prone precipitation gauges in windy mountain environments can be corrected with the HBayeRGC to improve understanding of mountain water resources.</p
The inverse nullity pair problem and the strong nullity interlacing property
The inverse eigenvalue problem studies the possible spectra among matrices
whose off-diagonal entries have their zero-nonzero patterns described by the
adjacency of a graph . In this paper, we refer to the -nullity pair of a
matrix as , where
is the matrix obtained from by removing the -th row and column.
The inverse -nullity pair problem is considered for complete graphs, cycles,
and trees. The strong nullity interlacing property is introduced, and the
corresponding supergraph lemma and decontraction lemma are developed as new
tools for constructing matrices with a given nullity pair
Understanding Your Community's Economic Base
Community leaders continually make important decisions that affect their community's economic growth and development. To make informed decisions, leaders need a thorough understanding of the community's economic base. This guide explains a method to measure a local economic base and compare it with other communities.Reviewed October 1993
Derivation of walk-in cooler and freezer Performance Standard equations as they pertain to the ANSI/AHRI Standard 1250 and 1251

University of Missouri--Kansas City, 2012Thesis advisor: Bryan BeckerThe ANSI/AHRI (American National Standard Institute (ANSI)/ Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI).) Standard 1250/1251 Performance Rating of Walk-In Coolers and Freezers strives to standardize refrigeration equipment performance rating. According to the Standard, refrigeration equipment is tested in a laboratory setting using a defined test method. An existing algorithm is used to calculate the Annual Walk-in Energy Factor (AWEF) which serves as a comparison of energy efficiency between equipment. In this work the algorithm was modified in an attempt to more closely approximate actual refrigeration system operation. To calculate the AWEF, a walk-in box load profile and a ratio of the equipment capacity to the refrigeration load are assumed by the Standard. An extensive literature review of ninety-eight articles was performed to address these assumptions. Information was categorized and analyzed for each load component, including lighting, occupancy, product, infiltration, conduction, and miscellaneous loads. Additional information was collected on refrigeration system design and operation. A model load profile was developed from which a revised AWEF algorithm was obtained. Simulations were performed on four walk-in refrigeration units to validate the revised calculation method. Raw results show improved correlation of compressor runtime, because a specific compressor runtime was targeted, reducing variation between hourly simulations and the 1250 calculation from -29.9% with the AHRI 1250 calculation (Becker et al. 2011) to 1.1% with the Proposed 1250 calculation. AWEF correlation between hourly simulations and the 1250 calculation degraded from -7.4% with the AHRI 1250 calculation (Becker et al. 2011) to 15.9% with the Proposed 1250 calculation. Plotting the results for the AWEF and compressor runtime correlation versus variation in the box load, between the hourly simulation and Proposed 1250 calculation results, revealed an issue with the compressor runtime calculation. At a box load variation of zero, the Proposed 1250 AWEF correlation is improved to -2.4%, and the Proposed 1250 compressor runtime correlation is degraded to -14.6%. If a specific compressor runtime had not been targeted, the AWEF correlation for each simulation set would have been improved. To summarize, the Proposed 1250 equations yield an improved AWEF calculation but do not accurately calculate the corresponding compressor runtime.Introduction -- Review of current work -- Literature review and industry investigation -- Development of proposed model load profile -- Development of proposed AHRI Standard 1250/1251 equations -- EQuest simulations -- Proposed 1250 calculation method discussion -- Conclusion
