Priority Team 9: Innovation without Burnout

Introduction For the past twelve months, members of the #9 team have read about, thought about and discussed how we can help the individuals and the organization that we care about engage in their work tasks in a more effective and healthy way, to remain innovative and agile, without compromising equilibrium and enthusiasm. At many points we have had more questions than answers yet we have learned a great deal. Collectively, the team has read over 75 relevant books and articles. We learned from those who are forging the path of innovation and well-being firsthand both outside of Cornell and inside CUL. Externally we learned from Cornell faculty and from innovators at other institutions. Within CUL, we listened to the comments of approximately 100 employees through a variety of methods. (A resource binder with summary reports and redacted comments from CUL employees will be provided to each LMT member.) This report synthesizes our understanding of the connections between innovation and burnout and makes recommendations for next steps. The team believes we have seen the start of the road toward innovation and engagement, and learned the markers that will help us find our way as we go. We hope that our work to date will inspire you to continue to build and broaden this path. This report is an invitation to join us on this journey of discovery. Like all journeys, this one begins in the imagination.Library Administratio

More than ever, Congress was forming super-majorities to circumvent the possibility of a presidential veto when political interests were at stake

    Get PDF
While the President is seen as having the final say in all US policymaking, congressionally formed veto-proof supermajorities are occurred more frequently on important issues between 1981-2008. Data collected by Linda Fowler and Bryan W. Marshall examine the paradox this pattern presents; partisan divisions that traditionally made legislation difficult to pass also provided mechanisms for enhanced party control over floor proceedings to foster bipartisanship and constrain the president’s options

El cultivar y época de siembra afectan el desempeño de la lechuga en un sistema tropical de producción orgánica

    Get PDF
Lettuce is a cool season crop typically grown at high altitudes or during the winter months in tropical climates, but is an important vegetable with potential for increased local production in Puerto Rico. To evaluate year round production potential, eleven lettuce cultivars were grown organically in Lajas under eight environments: winter, spring, summer and fall seasons in 2011 and 2012. All cultivars flowered later in the winter than in other seasons. There was a trend for flowering to be earliest in summer, but in many cultivars bolting occurred equally early in spring or fall. For most cultivars the greatest head weight and harvest yield was observed in the winter or spring season. Fall plantings generally resulted in plants with the smallest heads and lowest yields while summer plantings were intermediate in head weight and yield. ‘Queensland’ was the highest yielder in every season, yielding more than twice the average of all the genotypes in the summer and fall seasons, making it a valuable cultivar for year round production in the tropics. ‘Bergam’s Green’, ‘Jericho’ and ‘Parris Island’ also performed fairly well throughout the year. ‘Black Seeded Simpson’, a locally popular cultivar, performed poorly. &nbsp

The process of change in offender rehabilitation programmes

Whilst the overall effectiveness of offender rehabilitation programmes in reducing recidivism is now well established, there has been less discussion of the reasons why rehabilitation programmes may be unsuccessful for some offenders. In this paper we suggest that models of change developed in counselling and psychotherapy may have utility in explaining how offender rehabilitation programmes bring about change, and argue that the dominance of cognitive-behavioural treatments in the rehabilitation field means that those offenders who have particularly low levels of problem awareness may be at increased risk of treatment failure. Understanding more about the mechanisms by which programmes help offenders to desist from offending is likely to lead to the development of more responsive and, ultimately, more effective programmes. Some suggestions for those involved in the delivery of offender rehabilitation programmes include: being mindful of the sequence of components of programmes, the development of preparation (or readiness) programmes and offering a broad suite of programmes to cater for different stages of problem awareness and assimilation among offenders. <br /

Specific inhibition of human β-D-glucuronidase and α-L-iduronidase by a trihydroxy pipecolic acid of plant origin

    Get PDF
AbstractThe glucuronic acid analogue of 1-deoxynojirimycin, 2(S)-carboxy-3(R), 4(R), 5(S)-trihydroxypiperidine, recently isolated from seeds of Baphia racemosa, is a novel specific inhibitor of human liver β-D-glucuronidase and α-L-iduronidase. No other glycosidases are inhibited. The inhibition of β-D-glucuronidase is competitive, with a Ki of 8 × 10−5 M and is pH-dependent. This inhibitor may be useful to induce a mucopolysaccharidosis or to investigate the function of microsomal β-D-glucoronidase

Video games have become increasingly popular among young adults. The purpose of this pilot study was to determine if interactive video/arcade games, requiring physical activity to play, increase the energy expenditure (EE) and heart rate (HR) of young adults enough to elicit a training response. Thirteen male and female participants 26.6 ± 5.7 years of age were in the study. Participants were familiarized with equipment and allowed to practice with three games: (1) moving and striking lighted pads, (2) riding a bike to increase the pace of a race car, and (3) boxing against a video simulated opponent. A portable metabolic cart and HR monitor were attached to participants to measure baseline and exercise values. Participants could play any of the three games for 30 minutes while metabolic and HR data were collected. Exercise data were compared to baseline measures, and the 3 games were compared for EE. Paired sample t-tests showed baseline and exercise values differed for HR (t(12) = -18.91, p \u3c 0.01), and EE (t(12) = -15.62, p \u3c 0.01). The boxing game provided the highest VO2 (17.47 ± 4.79 ml·kg·-1min-1). Participants achieved 60% or better of their HR reserve (162.82 ± 10.78 beats·min-1), well within the ACSM guidelines for a training HR. Caloric expenditure during the 30-minute exercise session (226. 07 ± 48.68) is also within the ACSM recommendations for daily physical activity. Thus, interactive video/arcade games that require physical activity to play can be utilized as part of an overall aerobic exercise program
