Jet Noise Modeling for Suppressed and Unsuppressed Aircraft in Simulated Flight
This document describes the development of further extensions and improvements to the jet noise model developed by Modern Technologies Corporation (MTC) for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The noise component extraction and correlation approach, first used successfully by MTC in developing a noise prediction model for two-dimensional mixer ejector (2DME) nozzles under the High Speed Research (HSR) Program, has been applied to dual-stream nozzles, then extended and improved in earlier tasks under this contract. Under Task 6, the coannular jet noise model was formulated and calibrated with limited scale model data, mainly at high bypass ratio, including a limited-range prediction of the effects of mixing-enhancement nozzle-exit chevrons on jet noise. Under Task 9 this model was extended to a wider range of conditions, particularly those appropriate for a Supersonic Business Jet, with an improvement in simulated flight effects modeling and generalization of the suppressor model. In the present task further comparisons are made over a still wider range of conditions from more test facilities. The model is also further generalized to cover single-stream nozzles of otherwise similar configuration. So the evolution of this prediction/analysis/correlation approach has been in a sense backward, from the complex to the simple; but from this approach a very robust capability is emerging. Also from these studies, some observations emerge relative to theoretical considerations. The purpose of this task is to develop an analytical, semi-empirical jet noise prediction method applicable to takeoff, sideline and approach noise of subsonic and supersonic cruise aircraft over a wide size range. The product of this task is an even more consistent and robust model for the Footprint/Radius (FOOTPR) code than even the Task 9 model. The model is validated for a wider range of cases and statistically quantified for the various reference facilities. The possible role of facility effects will thus be documented. Although the comparisons that can be accomplished within the limited resources of this task are not comprehensive, they provide a broad enough sampling to enable NASA to make an informed decision on how much further effort should be expended on such comparisons. The improved finalized model is incorporated into the FOOTPR code. MTC has also supported the adaptation of this code for incorporation in NASA s Aircraft Noise Prediction Program (ANOPP)
Evaluating Software Development: A Case Study with Pasture Land Management (PLMS) Grazing Software
A process for evaluating and improving public domain software is presented for agents and faculty who author software and Web-based training. Extension, education, and conservation employees participated in workshops to learn about a Pasture Land Management System software program that enables farmers to experiment with alternative grazing methods. Users were questioned at initial workshop training and again 6 months later. The workshop evaluation showed concern about the software complexity. The follow-up questionnaire revealed the respondents\u27 priorities for technical improvements. The authors used the participants\u27 feedback to evaluate existing problems and prioritize improvements in the usability and functionality of the software
Lattice dynamics reveals a local symmetry breaking in the emergent dipole phase of PbTe
Local symmetry breaking in complex materials is emerging as an important
contributor to materials properties but is inherently difficult to study. Here
we follow up an earlier structural observation of such a local symmetry broken
phase in the technologically important compound PbTe with a study of the
lattice dynamics using inelastic neutron scattering (INS). We show that the
lattice dynamics are responsive to the local symmetry broken phase, giving key
insights in the behavior of PbTe, but also revealing INS as a powerful tool for
studying local structure. The new result is the observation of the unexpected
appearance on warming of a new zone center phonon branch in PbTe. In a harmonic
solid the number of phonon branches is strictly determined by the contents and
symmetry of the unit cell. The appearance of the new mode indicates a crossover
to a dynamic lower symmetry structure with increasing temperature. No
structural transition is seen crystallographically but the appearance of the
new mode in inelastic neutron scattering coincides with the observation of
local Pb off-centering dipoles observed in the local structure. The observation
resembles relaxor ferroelectricity but since there are no inhomogeneous dopants
in pure PbTe this anomalous behavior is an intrinsic response of the system. We
call such an appearance of dipoles out of a non-dipolar ground-state
"emphanisis" meaning the appearance out of nothing. It cannot be explained
within the framework of conventional phase transition theories such as
soft-mode theory and challenges our basic understanding of the physics of
materials
Improving the Baculovirus Expression Vector System with Vankyrin-Enhanced Technology
The baculovirus expression vector system (BEVS) is a widely used platform for the production of recombinant eukaryotic proteins. However, the BEVS has limitations in comparison to other higher eukaryotic expression systems. First, the insect cell lines used in the BEVS cannot produce glycoproteins with complex‐type N‐glycosylation patterns. Second, protein production is limited as cells die and lyse in response to baculovirus infection. To delay cell death and lysis, we transformed several insect cell lines with an expression plasmid harboring a vankyrin gene (P‐vank‐1), which encodes an anti‐apoptotic protein. Specifically, we transformed Sf9 cells, Trichoplusia ni High FiveTM cells, and SfSWT‐4 cells, which can produce glycoproteins with complex‐type N‐glycosylation patterns. The latter was included with the aim to increase production of glycoproteins with complex N‐glycans, thereby overcoming the two aforementioned limitations of the BEVS. To further increase vankyrin expression levels and further delay cell death, we also modified baculovirus vectors with the P‐vank‐1 gene. We found that cell lysis was delayed and recombinant glycoprotein yield increased when SfSWT‐4 cells were infected with a vankyrin‐encoding baculovirus. A synergistic effect in elevated levels of recombinant protein production was observed when vankyrin‐expressing cells were combined with a vankyrin‐encoding baculovirus. These effects were observed with various model proteins including medically relevant therapeutic proteins. In summary, we found that cell lysis could be delayed and recombinant protein yields could be increased by using cell lines constitutively expressing vankyrin or vankyrin‐encoding baculovirus vectors

Occupational therapy consensus recommendations for functional neurological disorder
BACKGROUND: People with functional neurological disorder (FND) are commonly seen by occupational therapists; however, there are limited descriptions in the literature about the type of interventions that are likely to be helpful. This document aims to address this issue by providing consensus recommendations for occupational therapy assessment and intervention. METHODS: The recommendations were developed in four stages. Stage 1: an invitation was sent to occupational therapists with expertise in FND in different countries to complete two surveys exploring their opinions regarding best practice for assessment and interventions for FND. Stage 2: a face-to-face meeting of multidisciplinary clinical experts in FND discussed and debated the data from stage 1, aiming to achieve consensus on each issue. Stage 3: recommendations based on the meeting were drafted. Stage 4: successive drafts of recommendations were circulated among the multidisciplinary group until consensus was achieved. RESULTS: We recommend that occupational therapy treatment for FND is based on a biopsychosocial aetiological framework. Education, rehabilitation within functional activity and the use of taught self-management strategies are central to occupational therapy intervention for FND. Several aspects of occupational therapy for FND are distinct from therapy for other neurological conditions. Examples to illustrate the recommendations are included within this document. CONCLUSIONS: Occupational therapists have an integral role in the multidisciplinary management of people with FND. This document forms a starting point for research aiming to develop evidence-based occupational therapy interventions for people with FND

Air Pollution and ST-Segment Depression in Elderly Subjects
Increased levels of daily ambient particle pollution have been associated with increased risk of cardiovascular morbidity. Black carbon (BC) is a measure of the traffic-related component of particles. We investigated associations between ambient pollution and ST-segment levels in a repeated-measures study including 269 observations on 24 active Boston residents 61–88 years of age, each observed up to 12 times from June through September 1999. The protocol involved continuous Holter electrocardiogram monitoring including 5 min of rest, 5 min of standing, 5 min of exercise outdoors, 5 min of recovery, and 20 cycles of paced breathing. Pollution-associated ST-depression was estimated for a 10th- to 90th-percentile change in BC. We calculated the average ST-segment level, referenced to the P-R isoelectric values, for each portion of the protocol. The mean BC level in the previous 12 hr, and the BC level 5 hr before testing, predicted ST-segment depression in most portions of the protocol, but the effect was strongest in the postexercise periods. During post-exercise rest, an elevated BC level was associated with −0.1 mm ST-segment depression (p = 0.02 for 12-hr mean BC; p = 0.001 for 5-hr BC) in continuous models. Elevated BC also predicted increased risk of ST-segment depression ≥0.5 mm among those with at least one episode of that level of ST-segment depression. Carbon monoxide was not a confounder of this association. ST-segment depression, possibly representing myocardial ischemia or inflammation, is associated with increased exposure to particles whose predominant source is traffic
Temporal trends of one-year reinfarction and mortality rates following primary angioplasty in high-risk acute myocardial infarction patients
HI Power Spectra and the Turbulent ISM of Dwarf Irregular Galaxies
HI spatial power spectra (PS) were determined for a sample of 24 nearby dwarf
irregular galaxies selected from the LITTLE THINGS (Local Irregulars That Trace
Luminosity Extremes - The HI Nearby Galaxy Survey) sample. The two-dimensional
(2D) power spectral indices asymptotically become a constant for each galaxy
when a significant part of the line profile is integrated. For narrow channel
maps, the PS become shallower as the channel width decreases, and this
shallowing trend continues to our single channel maps. This implies that even
the highest velocity resolution of 1.8 km/s is not smaller than the thermal
dispersion of the coolest, widespread HI component. The one-dimensional PS of
azimuthal profiles at different radii suggest that the shallower PS for
narrower channel width is mainly contributed by the inner disks, which
indicates that the inner disks have proportionally more cooler HI than the
outer disks. Galaxies with lower luminosity (M_B > -14.5 mag) and star
formation rate (SFR, log(SFR (M\odot/yr)) < -2.1) tend to have steeper PS,
which implies that the HI line-of-sight depths can be comparable with the
radial length scales in low mass galaxies. A lack of a correlation between the
inertial-range spectral indices and SFR surface density implies that either
non-stellar power sources are playing a fundamental role in driving the
interstellar medium (ISM) turbulent structure, or the nonlinear development of
