    Suicidal Ideation and Self-injury Prevalence and Impairment in an Urban Integrated Primary Care Clinic

    Introduction: Suicide is the second leading cause of death for adolescents (Rosenbaum & Ougrin, 2019). Pediatric primary care staff are often the first line of intervention for youth presenting with suicidal thoughts and NSSI (Taliaferro et al., 2013). The primary aim of the current study was to describe reported suicidal ideation, attempts, and NSSI in youth presenting to an urban integrated primary care setting. Methods: Within an outpatient pediatric primary care clinic, patients were referred by medical staff and introduced to behavioral health services. Patients were asked about their history of suicidal thoughts/attempts and NSSI (Mage = 12.63; SD = 4.51; 66.3% female, 66.3% Black; 69.6% Medicaid). Patients were also screened using the Pediatric Symptom Checklist-17 (PSC17; Gardner et al., 2007) and Top Problems (Weisz et al., 2001). Results: Seventeen percent of patients endorsed a history of either suicidal ideation/attempts or NSSI. Chi-square analyses identified a significant association between patient race and suicidal ideation/attempts [χ2(6) = 13.56, p = .035]. The sample’s mean internalizing score on the PSC17 fell within the clinical range (M = 6.13, SD = 2.49). Further results reflecting findings, interventions used, and top problem areas will be presented. Conclusion: Results highlight a demand for establishing and sustaining effective screening and engagement in mental health treatment for youth suicidality and self-injury in integrated care settings.     We are engaged in a wide-field, multi-colour imaging survey of X-ray selected clusters at intermediate and high redshift. We present blue fractions for the first 8 out of 29 clusters, covering almost a factor of 100 in X-ray luminosity. We find no correlation of blue fraction with redshift or X-ray luminosity.     Insight into the fundamental trade-offs of diffusion MRI from polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography in ex vivo human brain

    In the first study comparing high angular resolution diffusion MRI (dMRI) in the human brain to axonal orientation measurements from polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography (PSOCT), we compare the accuracy of orientation estimates from various dMRI sampling schemes and reconstruction methods. We find that, if the reconstruction approach is chosen carefully, single-shell dMRI data can yield the same accuracy as multi-shell data, and only moderately lower accuracy than a full Cartesian-grid sampling scheme. Our results suggest that current dMRI reconstruction approaches do not benefit substantially from ultra-high b-values or from very large numbers of diffusion-encoding directions. We also show that accuracy remains stable across dMRI voxel sizes of 1 ​mm or smaller but degrades at 2 ​mm, particularly in areas of complex white-matter architecture. We also show that, as the spatial resolution is reduced, axonal configurations in a dMRI voxel can no longer be modeled as a small set of distinct axon populations, violating an assumption that is sometimes made by dMRI reconstruction techniques. Our findings have implications for in vivo studies and illustrate the value of PSOCT as a source of ground-truth measurements of white-matter organization that does not suffer from the distortions typical of histological techniques.Published versio

    Differential effects of \u3ci\u3eCdh23\u3csup\u3e753A\u3c/sup\u3e\u3c/i\u3e on auditory and vestibular functional aging in C57BL/6J mice

    The C57BL/6J (B6) mouse strain carries a cadherin 23 mutation (Cdh23753A, also known as Ahl), which affects inner ear structures and results in age-related hearing loss. The B6.CAST strain harbors the wild type Cdh23 gene, and hence, the influence of Ahl is absent. The purpose of the present study was to characterize the effect of age and gender on gravity receptor function in B6 and B6.CAST strains and to compare functional aging between auditory and vestibular modalities. Auditory sensitivity declined at significantly faster rates than gravity receptor sensitivity for both strains. Indeed, vestibular functional aging was minimal for both strains. The comparatively smaller loss of macular versus cochlear sensitivity in both the B6 and B6.CAST strains suggests that the contribution of Ahl to the aging of the vestibular system is minimal, and thus very different than its influence on aging of the auditory system. Alternatively, there exist unidentified genes or gene modifiers that serve to slow the degeneration of gravity receptor structures and maintain gravity receptor sensitivity into advanced age

    TOX3 mutations in breast cancer

    TOX3 maps to 16q12, a region commonly lost in breast cancers and recently implicated in the risk of developing breast cancer. However, not much is known of the role of TOX3 itself in breast cancer biology. This is the first study to determine the importance of TOX3 mutations in breast cancers. We screened TOX3 for mutations in 133 breast tumours and identified four mutations (three missense, one in-frame deletion of 30 base pairs) in six primary tumours, corresponding to an overall mutation frequency of 4.5%. One potentially deleterious missense mutation in exon 3 (Leu129Phe) was identified in one tumour (genomic DNA and cDNA). Whilst copy number changes of 16q12 are common in breast cancer, our data show that mutations of TOX3 are present at low frequency in tumours.
