    The natural resources of Carpinteria Marsh: their status and future

    The purpose of this report is: 1) to document the natural resources of Carpinteria Marsh, 2) outline the uses those resources receive, 3) enumerate the problems and conflicts of use that affect those resources, and 4) recommend measures that will protect and enhance the marsh and its resources. It is intended as a guide for citizens, planners and administrators of all private and public entities interested in the status and future of the marsh. This report has been prepared under contract to and fully funded by the Office of Biological Services of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The goals and purpose of this federal office are to review the impact on fish and wildlife resources of land, mineral and water development practices, such as offshore oil and gas exploration, development and production; construction of inshore pipeline canals and refineries; power plant construction/operation and urban development. This report, and five other southern California reports, covering Agua Hedionda (San Diego County), Anaheim Bay-Huntington Harbor (Orange County), Mugu Lagoon (Ventura County), the Northern Santa Barbara County Coastal Wetlands and the Nipomo Dunes and Wetlands (San Luis Obispo County), are scheduled to be part of the Department's "Coastal Wetland Series" that includes reports on the natural resources of Upper Newport Bay (Orange County), Goleta Slough (Santa Barbara county), Bolinas Lagoon (Marin County), Elkhorn Slough (Monterey County), San Diego Bay and Los Penasquitos Lagoon (San Diego County), Morro Bay (San Luis Obispo County), Humboldt Bay and the Eel River Delta (Humboldt County), Lake Earl and the Smith River Delta (Del Norte County) and Bodega Harbor (Sonoma County).     Factors influencing choice of share or cash rental leases for cropland are examined using a 1996 dataset containing 1071 lease contracts in Nebraska and in South Dakota.     This paper develops an adaptive learning formulation of an extension to the Ball, Mankiw, and Reis (2005) sticky information model that incorporates endogenous inattention. We show that, following an exogenous increase in the policymaker’s preferences for price vs. output stability, the learning process can converge to a new equilibrium in which both output and price volatility are lower.Monetary policy ; Information theory

    The Permian Bivalvia collected and described by J.D. Dana (1847, 1849) from the Sydney Basin, New South Wales, Australia are revised and illustrated from the collections at the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. The morphology of some genera erected by Dana (1847) is clarified, and some of the obscure species, such as Pecten mitis, Astarte gemma, and Pholadomya glendonensis are redescribed. Statistical summaries are presented for some of the species with controversial limits, such as Pyramus myiformis Dana, Notomya securiformis M’Coy, and various species of Astartila. Newly proposed names are Polidevcia cryptica for Nucula concinna Dana, 1847 not Nucula concinna Sowerby, 1836; and Astartila runnegari for Pachydomus ovalis M’Coy, November 1847, not Pachydomus ovalis Sowerby, February 1847, the latter new name a subjective synonym of Astartila intrepida Dana

    In a country where more than 40% of the agricultural land is farmed by tenant operators, the question of how that land base is farmed becomes paramount In this study we examined soil erosion levels in relation to land tenure and surveyed tenant farmer practices and attitudes in Nebraska and South Dakota, We found leased land was farmed and maintained by tenants in an environmentally sustainable manner, Furthermore, we found no evidence to suggest variation from this norm due to type of lease, size of farm, type of farm organization, or landowner classification, While educational level and years of experience (age) contributed to soil stewardship practices, to a great extent tenant farmers in these Great Plains states farmed leased land in a conscientious manner to maintain their integrity and reputation in the community as being a good farmer, Landowners, as well as society at large, benefit from this perspective

    Visual Representation Determines Search Difficulty: Explaining Visual Search Asymmetries

    In visual search experiments there exist a variety of experimental paradigms in which a symmetric set of experimental conditions yields asymmetric corresponding task performance. There are a variety of examples of this that currently lack a satisfactory explanation. In this paper, we demonstrate that distinct classes of asymmetries may be explained by virtue of a few simple conditions that are consistent with current thinking surrounding computational modeling of visual search and coding in the primate brain. This includes a detailed look at the role that stimulus familiarity plays in the determination of search performance. Overall, we demonstrate that all of these asymmetries have a common origin, namely, they are a consequence of the encoding that appears in the visual cortex. The analysis associated with these cases yields insight into the problem of visual search in general and predictions of novel search asymmetries
