    The natural resources of Carpinteria Marsh: their status and future

    The purpose of this report is: 1) to document the natural resources of Carpinteria Marsh, 2) outline the uses those resources receive, 3) enumerate the problems and conflicts of use that affect those resources, and 4) recommend measures that will protect and enhance the marsh and its resources. It is intended as a guide for citizens, planners and administrators of all private and public entities interested in the status and future of the marsh. This report has been prepared under contract to and fully funded by the Office of Biological Services of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The goals and purpose of this federal office are to review the impact on fish and wildlife resources of land, mineral and water development practices, such as offshore oil and gas exploration, development and production; construction of inshore pipeline canals and refineries; power plant construction/operation and urban development. This report, and five other southern California reports, covering Agua Hedionda (San Diego County), Anaheim Bay-Huntington Harbor (Orange County), Mugu Lagoon (Ventura County), the Northern Santa Barbara County Coastal Wetlands and the Nipomo Dunes and Wetlands (San Luis Obispo County), are scheduled to be part of the Department's "Coastal Wetland Series" that includes reports on the natural resources of Upper Newport Bay (Orange County), Goleta Slough (Santa Barbara county), Bolinas Lagoon (Marin County), Elkhorn Slough (Monterey County), San Diego Bay and Los Penasquitos Lagoon (San Diego County), Morro Bay (San Luis Obispo County), Humboldt Bay and the Eel River Delta (Humboldt County), Lake Earl and the Smith River Delta (Del Norte County) and Bodega Harbor (Sonoma County).     Three-Dimensional Simulations of Solar and Stellar Dynamos: The Influence of a Tachocline

    We review recent advances in modeling global-scale convection and dynamo processes with the Anelastic Spherical Harmonic (ASH) code. In particular, we have recently achieved the first global-scale solar convection simulations that exhibit turbulent pumping of magnetic flux into a simulated tachocline and the subsequent organization and amplification of toroidal field structures by rotational shear. The presence of a tachocline not only promotes the generation of mean toroidal flux, but it also enhances and stabilizes the mean poloidal field throughout the convection zone, promoting dipolar structure with less frequent polarity reversals. The magnetic field generated by a convective dynamo with a tachocline and overshoot region is also more helical overall, with a sign reversal in the northern and southern hemispheres. Toroidal tachocline fields exhibit little indication of magnetic buoyancy instabilities but may be undergoing magneto-shear instabilities.Comment: 14 pages, 5 color figures, to appear in Proc.     Iowa farmers who farmed round their hills — the contour method — in 1943 got more corn, oats and soybeans to the acre than the farmers who farmed up and down their hills. At least this was the conclusion we reached after comparing yields of these crops grown by the two methods side by side in the same fields. We had results from 61 fields of corn, 38 of soybeans and 18 of oats in different parts of Iowa

    Characterization of transport and magnetic properties in thin film La(0.67)(Ca(x)Sr(1-x))(0.33)MnO(3) mixtures

    We have grown thin films of (100) oriented La_{0.67}(Ca_{x}Sr_{1-x})_{0.33}MnO_{3} on (100) NdGaO_{3} substrates by off-axis sputtering. We have looked at the changes in the resistivity and magnetoresistance of the samples as the Ca/Sr ratio was varied. We find that as the calcium fraction is decreased, the lattice match to the substrate decreases, and the films become more disordered, as observed in transport measurements and the variation in Curie and peak resistance temperatures. We find a correlation between the temperature independent and T^2 terms to the low temperature resistivity. The room temperature magnetoresistance exhibits a maximum as the peak temperature is increased by the substitution of Sr for Ca, and a change in the field dependence to the resistivity at room temperature is observed.Comment: 5 pages, 6 eps figures, to be published in Journal of Applied Physic

    One of the live topics of the day is whether the plow is ruining our land, whether farmers to save the soil for this and future generations must stop the age-old practice of plowing in preparing their land for cultivated crops. In this article the authors discuss the results of experiments conducted here in Iowa in which plowing is compared with other means of preparing seedbeds for corn. In general, we think many of you Iowa farmers who read the results of these tests will decide - if you haven\u27t already - that perhaps you are not quite ready to junk your plows

    Neutrophil Gelatinase-associated Lipocalin as a Marker of Postoperative Acute Kidney Injury Following Cardiac Surgery in Patients with Preoperative Kidney Impairment.

    IntroductionAcute kidney injury (AKI) is a serious complication of cardiac surgery. The current 'gold standard' for determining AKI is change in serum creatinine and urine output, however, this change occurs relatively late after the actual injury occurs. Identification of new biomarkers that detect early AKI is required. Recently, new biomarkers, such as the NephroCheck® Test and AKIRisk have also been tested and found to be good indicators of AKI. Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) has shown promise in paediatric patients but has displayed varied results in adult populations, particularly post cardiac surgery. The aim of this study was to assess the value of urinary NGAL as a biomarker of AKI in patients with pre-existing renal impairment (eGFR >15ml/min to eGFRMethodsA post-hoc analysis of urinary NGAL concentrations from 125 patients with pre-existing kidney impairment, who participated in a randomised trial of haemofiltration during cardiac surgery, was undertaken. Urinary NGAL was measured using ELISA at baseline, post-operatively and 24 and 48 hours after surgery, and serum creatinine was measured pre and postoperatively and then at 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours as routine patient care. NGAL concentrations were compared in patients with and without AKI determined by changes in serum creatinine concentrations. A Kaplan-Meier plot compared survival for patients with or without AKI and a Cox proportional hazards analysis was performed to identify factors with the greatest influence on survival.ResultsFollowing surgery, 43% of patients developed AKI (based on KDIGO definition). Baseline urinary NGAL was not found to be significantly different between patients that did and did not develop AKI. Urinary NGAL concentration was increased in all patients following surgery, regardless of whether they developed AKI and was also significant between groups at 24 (p=0.003) and 48 hours (p156ng/mL also strongly predicted 7-year survival. However, additive EuroSCORE, age, current smoking and post-operative antibiotics usage were distinctly significantly more predictive of 7-year survival as compared with postoperative urinary NGAL at 48 hours >156ng/mL.ConclusionsOur study demonstrated that postoperative urinary NGAL levels at 48 hours postsurgery strongly predicts the onset or severity of postoperative AKI based on KDIGO classification in patients with preoperative kidney impairment and were also strongly related to 7-year survival

    Textural constraints on the formation of alteration phases in CM chondrites

    Although it is generally believed that the secondary alteration phases observed in CM chondrites resulted from parent body reactions, the influence of nebular processing can not yet be dismissed. We have analyzed 5 CM falls using optical and electron microscopy to construct a comprehensive pictorial reference set of textural and mineralogical associations bearing on the origin of alteration products in these meteorites. Our analyses support pervasive aqueous alteration on the CM parent body, but they do not exclude the possibility of minor nebular alteration

    Can the Corn Belt farmer prepare seedbeds for corn more cheaply without plowing and still produce as good a crop as he can by plowing? Many attempts have been made in past years to substitute lighter draft implements for the plow. Listing has been used in the Great Plains for many years. More recent attempts to stir the soil without turning it have given pretty good results in Nebraska and other states in the Wheat Belt. And during the past 2 or 3 years a scheme to discard plows entirely and prepare seedbeds with a disk harrow has received wide publicity
