    Demographic and Operational Factors Predicting Study Completion in a Multisite Case-Control Study of Preschool Children

    Participant attrition can limit inferences drawn from study results and inflate research costs. We examined factors associated with completion of the Study to Explore Early Development (2007-2011), a multiple-component, case-control study of risk factors for autism spectrum disorder in preschoolers, conducted in California, Colorado, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania. Participants (n = 3,769) were asked to complete phone interviews, questionnaires, an in-person evaluation, and biologic sampling. We examined whether participant demographic and administrative factors predicted completion using mixed-effects logistic regression models. Completion of individual key study components was generally 70% or higher. However, 58% of families completed all per-protocol data elements (defined a priori as key study components). Per-protocol completion differed according to mother's age, race, educational level, driving distance to clinic, number of contact attempts to enroll, and number of telephone numbers provided (all P < 0.05). Case status was not associated with completion, despite additional data collection for case-confirmation. Analysis of a subset that completed an early interview revealed no differences in completion by household factors of income, primary language spoken, number of adults, or number of children with chronic conditions. Differences in completion by race and education were notable and need to be carefully considered in developing future recruitment and completion strategies

    Beta-gamma spectroscopy of the neutron-rich 150Ba

    International audience; Excited states in the neutron-rich nucleus 150Ba have been observed via β–γ spectroscopy at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory, RIKEN Nishina Center. The 150Ba ions were produced by the in-flight fission of a 238U beam with an energy of 345 MeV/nucleon. The E(2+) energy of 150Ba was identified at 100 keV, which is the lowest known in the neutron-rich Ba isotopes. A γ -ray peak was also observed at 597 keV. A mean-field calculation with a fully 3D real space was performed and a static octupole deformation was obtained for the Ba isotopes. Kπ = 0− and 1− excited states with significant octupole collectivity were newly predicted at around or lower than 1 MeV on the ground state of 150Ba by a random-phase approximation calculation. The 597 keV γ ray can be interpreted as a negative-parity state, showing that 150Ba may possess octupole collectivity

    Measurement of the νe and total 8B solar neutrino fluxes with the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory phase-III data set

    This paper details the solar neutrino analysis of the 385.17-day phase-III data set acquired by the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO). An array of 3He proportional counters was installed in the heavy-water target to measure precisely the rate of neutrino-deuteron neutral-current interactions. This technique to determine the total active 8B solar neutrino flux was largely independent of the methods employed in previous phases. The total flux of active neutrinos was measured to be 5.54-0.31+0.33(stat.)-0.34+0.36(syst.)×106 cm-2 s-1, consistent with previous measurements and standard solar models. A global analysis of solar and reactor neutrino mixing parameters yielded the best-fit values of Δm2=7.59-0.21+0.19×10 -5eV2 and θ=34.4-1.2+1.3degrees

    Open hands: an open-source statistical shape model of the finger bones

    This paper presents statistical shape models of the four fingers of the hand, with an emphasis on anatomic analysis of the proximal and distal interphalangeal joints. A multi-body statistical shape modelling pipeline was implemented on an exemplar training dataset of computed tomography (CT) scans of 10 right hands (5F:5M, 27–37 years, free from disease or injury) imaged at 0.3 mm resolution, segmented, meshed and aligned. Model generated included pose neutralisation to remove joint angle variation during imaging. Repositioning was successful; no joint flexion variation was observed in the resulting model. The first principal component (PC) of morphological variation represented phalanx size in all fingers. Subsequent PCs showed variation in position along the palmar-dorsal axis, and bone breadth: length ratio. Finally, the models were interrogated to provide gross measures of bone lengths and joint spaces. These models have been published for open use to support wider community efforts in hand biomechanical analysis, providing bony anatomy descriptions whilst preserving the security of the underlying imaging data and privacy of the participants. The model describes a small, homogeneous population, and assumptions cannot be made about how it represents individuals outside the training dataset. However, it supplements anthropometric datasets with additional shape information, and may be useful for investigating factors such as joint morphology and design of hand-interfacing devices and products. The model has been shared as an open-source repository (https://github.com/abel-research/OpenHands), and we encourage the community to use and contribute to it
