Exact solutions in a scalar-tensor model of dark energy
We consider a model of scalar field with non minimal kinetic and Gauss Bonnet
couplings as a source of dark energy. Based on asymptotic limits of the
generalized Friedmann equation, we impose restrictions on the kinetic an
Gauss-Bonnet couplings. This restrictions considerable simplify the equations,
allowing for exact solutions unifying early time matter dominance with
transitions to late time quintessence and phantom phases. The stability of the

X-Ray Polarization of Solar Flares Measured with Rhessi
The degree of linear polarization in solar flares has not yet been precisely
determined despite multiple attempts to measure it with different missions. The
high energy range in particular has very rarely been explored, due to its
greater instrumental difficulties. We approached the subject using the Reuven
Ramaty High Energy Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI) satellite to study 6 X-class
and 1 M-class flares in the energy range between 100 keV and 350 keV. Using
RHESSI as a polarimeter requires the application of strict cuts to the event
list in order to extract those photons that are Compton scattered between two
detectors. Our measurements show polarization values between 2% and 54%, with
errors ranging from 10% to 26% in 1 sigma level. In view of the large
uncertainties in both the magnitude and direction of the polarization vector,

Towards a Resolution of the Cosmological Singularity in Non-local Higher Derivative Theories of Gravity
One of the greatest problems of standard cosmology is the Big Bang
singularity. Previously it has been shown that non-local ghostfree
higher-derivative modifications of Einstein gravity in the ultra-violet regime
can admit non-singular bouncing solutions. In this paper we study in more
details the dynamical properties of the equations of motion for these theories
of gravity in presence of positive and negative cosmological constants and
radiation. We find stable inflationary attractor solutions in the presence of a
positive cosmological constant which renders inflation {\it geodesically
complete}, while in the presence of a negative cosmological constant a cyclic
universe emerges. We also provide an algorithm for tracking the super-Hubble
perturbations during the bounce and show that the bouncing solutions are free

Relativistic transition wavelenghts and probabilities for spectral lines of Ne II
Transition wavelengths and probabilities for several 2p4 3p - 2p4 3s and 2p4
3d - 2p4 3p lines in fuorine-like neon ion (NeII) have been calculated within
the multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock (MCDF) method with quantum electrodynamics
(QED) corrections. The results are compared with all existing experimental and
theoretical data

Life‐cycle responses of a Mediterranean non‐migratory cyprinid species, the Northern Iberian chub (Squalius carolitertii Doadrio, 1988), to streamflow regulation.
Streamflow is considered a driver of interspecific and intraspecific life‐history differences among freshwater fish. Therefore, dams and related flow regulation can have deleterious impacts on their life cycles. The main objective of this study was to assess existing differences in the growth and reproduction patterns of a non‐migratory fish species (the Northern Iberian chub, Squalius carolitertii, Doadrio, 1988), between nonregulated and regulated watercourses. For 1 year, samples were collected from two populations of Iberian chub, inhabiting rivers with nonregulated and regulated flow regimes. Flow regulation for water storage promoted changes in chub's condition, duration of spawning, fecundity, and oocyte size. However, this non‐migratory species was less responsive to streamflow regulation than other native potamodromous species. Findings from this study are important to understand changes imposed by regulated rivers and can be used to support the implementation of suitable river management practices
Butterflies (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea and Hesperioidea) of the Parque Ecológico João Vasconcelos Sobrinho, Caruaru, Pernambuco, Brazil
Measurement of the partial widths of the Z into up- and down-type quarks
Using the entire OPAL LEP1 on-peak Z hadronic decay sample, Z -> qbarq gamma
decays were selected by tagging hadronic final states with isolated photon
candidates in the electromagnetic calorimeter. Combining the measured rates of
Z -> qbarq gamma decays with the total rate of hadronic Z decays permits the
simultaneous determination of the widths of the Z into up- and down-type
quarks. The values obtained, with total errors, were Gamma u = 300 ^{+19}_{-18}
MeV and Gamma d = 381 ^{+12}_{-12} MeV. The results are in good agreement with
