Annealing of amorphous FexCo100-x nanoparticles synthesized by a modified aqueous reduction using NaBH4
FexCo100−x nanoparticles were synthesized by aqueous reduction in iron (II) sulfate and cobalt (II) sulfate using sodium borohydride and sodium citrate. The initial concentrations of iron and cobalt were varied while maintaining an overall metal concentration of 4.60 mM. Increasing the cobalt content from 0 to 100 at. % decreased the magnetization saturation from 152 to 48 emu/g, as determined by room temperature vibrating sample magnetometry. Annealing the samples at 450 and 600 °C showed an increase in crystallite size. Powder x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy was performed to determine the phases and morphology of the materials

Results of the radiological and chemical characterization of surface impoundments 3539 and 3540 at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, Tennessee
A radiological and chemical characterization survey of impoundments 3539 and 3540 at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) was conducted during December 1997. Impoundments 3539 and 3540 are located in the Surface Impoundments Operable Unit (SIOU) of Waste Area Group 1. The investigation was performed by the Measurement Applications and Development Group of the Life Sciences Division of ORNL at the request of the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Environmental Restoration. Sampling was conducted in order to quantify the presence of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) constituents, and other contaminants of interest in support of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) remediation for the SIOU> The survey included collection of sediment/clay samples, quality control blank water samples and equipment rinsate samples for chemical and radiological analysis. Results show the samples contain traces of various organic, inorganic, and radioactive materials. Of particular interest are PCB values which demonstrate the impoundments are not regulated under the Toxic Substances Control Act

Prospective Validation of Pooled Prognostic Factors in Women with Advanced Cervical Cancer Treated with Chemotherapy with/without Bevacizumab: NRG Oncology/GOG Study
PURPOSE:
In the randomized phase III trial, Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG) protocol 240, the incorporation of bevacizumab with chemotherapy significantly increased overall survival (OS) in women with advanced cervical cancer. A major objective of GOG-240 was to prospectively analyze previously identified pooled clinical prognostic factors known as the Moore criteria.
EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN:
Potential negative factors included black race, performance status 1, pelvic disease, prior cisplatin, and progression-free interval <365 days. Risk categories included low-risk (0-1 factor), mid-risk (2-3 factors), and high-risk (4-5 factors). Each test of association was conducted at the 5% level of significance. Logistic regression and survival analysis was used to determine whether factors were prognostic or could be used to guide therapy.
RESULTS:
For the entire population (n = 452), high-risk patients had significantly worse OS (P < 0.0001). The HRs of death for treating with topotecan in low-risk, mid-risk, and high-risk subsets are 1.18 [95% confidence interval (CI), 0.63-2.24], 1.11 (95% CI, 0.82-1.5), and 0.84 (95% CI, 0.50-1.42), respectively. The HRs of death for treating with bevacizumab in low-risk, mid-risk, and high-risk subsets are 0.96 (95% CI, 0.51-1.83; P = 0.9087), 0.673 (95% CI, 0.5-0.91; P = 0.0094), and 0.536 (95% CI, 0.32-0.905; P = 0.0196), respectively.
CONCLUSIONS:
This is the first prospectively validated scoring system in cervical cancer. The Moore criteria have real-world clinical applicability. Toxicity concerns may justify omission of bevacizumab in some low-risk patients where survival benefit is small. The benefit to receiving bevacizumab appears to be greatest in the moderate- and high-risk subgroups (5.8-month increase in median OS)
Gravitating Model Solitons
We study axially symmetric static solitons of O(3) nonlinear model
coupled to (2+1)-dimensional anti-de Sitter gravity. The obtained solutions are
not self-dual under static metric. The usual regular topological lump solution
cannot form a black hole even though the scale of symmetry breaking is
increased. There exist nontopological solitons of half integral winding in a
given model, and the corresponding spacetimes involve charged Baados-Teitelboim-Zanelli black holes without non-Abelian scalar hair.Comment: 35 pages, RevTe
A Study of the S=1/2 Alternating Chain using Multiprecision Methods
In this paper we present results for the ground state and low-lying
excitations of the alternating Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain. Our
more conventional techniques include perturbation theory about the dimer limit
and numerical diagonalization of systems of up to 28 spins. A novel application
of multiple precision numerical diagonalization allows us to determine
analytical perturbation series to high order; the results found using this
approach include ninth-order perturbation series for the ground state energy
and one magnon gap, which were previously known only to third order. We also
give the fifth-order dispersion relation and third-order exclusive neutron
scattering structure factor for one-magnon modes and numerical and analytical
binding energies of S=0 and S=1 two-magnon bound states.Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures. for submission to Phys.Rev.B. PICT files of figs
