    On Differential Rotation and Convection in the Sun

    We show that the differential rotation profile of the solar convection zone, apart from inner and outer boundary layers, can be reproduced with great accu- racy if the isorotation contours correspond to characteristics of the thermal wind equation. This requires that there be a formal quantitative relationship involving the entropy and the angular velocity. Earlier work has suggested that this could arise from magnetohydrodynamic stability constraints; here we argue that purely hydrodynamical processes could also lead to such a result. Of special importance to the hydrodynamical solution is the fact that the thermal wind equation is insensitive to radial entropy gradients. This allows a much more general class of solutions to fit the solar isorotation contours, beyond just those in which the entropy itself must be a function of the angular velocity. In particular, for this expanded class, the thermal wind solution of the solar rotation profile remains valid even when large radial entropy gradients are present. A clear and explicit example of this class of solution appears to be present in published numerical simulations of the solar convective zone. Though hydrodynamical in character, the theory is not sensitive to the presence of weak magnetic fields. Thus, the identification of solar isorotation contours with the characteristics of the thermal wind equation appears to be robust, accommodating, but by no means requiring, magnetic field dynamics.Comment: 16 pages, 2 figures.     Enzyme-catalyzed mechanism of isoniazid activation in class I and class III peroxidases.

    There is an urgent need to understand the mechanism of activation of the frontline anti-tuberculosis drug isoniazid by the Mycobacterium tuberculosis catalase-peroxidase. To address this, a combination of NMR spectroscopic, biochemical, and computational methods have been used to obtain a model of the frontline anti-tuberculosis drug isoniazid bound to the active site of the class III peroxidase, horseradish peroxidase C. This information has been used in combination with the new crystal structure of the M. tuberculosis catalase-peroxidase to predict the mode of INH binding across the class I heme peroxidase family. An enzyme-catalyzed mechanism for INH activation is proposed that brings together structural, functional, and spectroscopic data from a variety of sources. Collectively, the information not only provides a molecular basis for understanding INH activation by the M. tuberculosis catalase-peroxidase but also establishes a new conceptual framework for testing hypotheses regarding the enzyme-catalyzed turnover of this compound in a number of heme peroxidases

    The Solar Neighborhood X: New Nearby Stars in the Southern Sky and Accurate Photometric Distance Estimates for Red Dwarfs

    Photometric VRI and spectroscopic (6000-9500 A) observations of high proper motion stars discovered during the first phase of the SuperCOSMOS RECONS (SCR) search are used to estimate accurate distances to eight new nearby red dwarfs, including probable 10 pc sample members SCR 1845-6357 (M8.5V at 4.6 pc), the binary SCR 0630-7643AB (M6.0VJ at 7.0 pc), and SCR 1138-7721 (M5.0V at 9.4 pc). Distance estimates are determined using a suite of new photometric color-Mk relations defined using a robust set of nearby stars with accurate VRIJHK photometry and trigonometric parallaxes. These relations are utilized, with optical and infrared photometry, to estimate distances on a uniform system (generally good to 15%) for two additional samples of red nearby star candidates: several recently discovered members of the solar neighborhood, and known faint stars with proper motions in excess of 1.0"/yr south of DEC = -57.5. Of those without accurate trigonometric parallax measurements, there are five stars in the first sample and three in the second that are likely to be within 10 pc. The two nearest are SO 0253+1652 (M7.0V at 3.7 pc) and DEN 1048-3956 (M8.5V at 4.5 pc). When combined with SCR 1845-6357, these three stars together represent the largest increase in the 5 pc sample in several decades. Red spectra are presented for the red dwarfs and types are given on the RECONS standard spectral system. Red spectra are also given for two new nearby white dwarfs for which we estimate distances from the photometry of less than 20 pc -- WD 0141-675 (LHS 145, 9.3 pc) and SCR 2012-5956 (17.4 pc).     Symptoms and quality of life in late stage Parkinson syndromes: a longitudinal community study of predictive factors

    BACKGROUND Palliative care is increasingly offered earlier in the cancer trajectory but rarely in Idiopathic Parkinson's Disease(IPD), Progressive Supranuclear Palsy(PSP) or Multiple System Atrophy(MSA). There is little longitudinal data of people with late stage disease to understand levels of need. We aimed to determine how symptoms and quality of life of these patients change over time; and what demographic and clinical factors predicted changes. METHODS We recruited 82 patients into a longitudinal study, consenting patients with a diagnosis of IPD, MSA or PSP, stages 3-5 Hoehn and Yahr(H&Y). At baseline and then on up to 3 occasions over one year, we collected self-reported demographic, clinical, symptom, palliative and quality of life data, using Parkinson's specific and generic validated scales, including the Palliative care Outcome Scale (POS). We tested for predictors using multivariable analysis, adjusting for confounders. FINDINGS Over two thirds of patients had severe disability, over one third being wheelchair-bound/bedridden. Symptoms were highly prevalent in all conditions - mean (SD) of 10.6(4.0) symptoms. More than 50% of the MSA and PSP patients died over the year. Over the year, half of the patients showed either an upward (worsening, 24/60) or fluctuant (8/60) trajectory for POS and symptoms. The strongest predictors of higher levels of symptoms at the end of follow-up were initial scores on POS (AOR 1.30; 95%CI:1.05-1.60) and being male (AOR 5.18; 95% CI 1.17 to 22.92), both were more predictive than initial H&Y scores. INTERPRETATION The findings point to profound and complex mix of non-motor and motor symptoms in patients with late stage IPD, MSA and PSP. Symptoms are not resolved and half of the patients deteriorate. Palliative problems are predictive of future symptoms, suggesting that an early palliative assessment might help screen for those in need of earlier intervention

    Diffusion tensor imaging of Parkinson's disease, multiple system atrophy and progressive supranuclear palsy: a tract-based spatial statistics study

    Although often clinically indistinguishable in the early stages, Parkinson's disease (PD), Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) and Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) have distinct neuropathological changes. The aim of the current study was to identify white matter tract neurodegeneration characteristic of each of the three syndromes. Tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) was used to perform a whole-brain automated analysis of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data to compare differences in fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD) between the three clinical groups and healthy control subjects. Further analyses were conducted to assess the relationship between these putative indices of white matter microstructure and clinical measures of disease severity and symptoms. In PSP, relative to controls, changes in DTI indices consistent with white matter tract degeneration were identified in the corpus callosum, corona radiata, corticospinal tract, superior longitudinal fasciculus, anterior thalamic radiation, superior cerebellar peduncle, medial lemniscus, retrolenticular and anterior limb of the internal capsule, cerebral peduncle and external capsule bilaterally, as well as the left posterior limb of the internal capsule and the right posterior thalamic radiation. MSA patients also displayed differences in the body of the corpus callosum corticospinal tract, cerebellar peduncle, medial lemniscus, anterior and superior corona radiata, posterior limb of the internal capsule external capsule and cerebral peduncle bilaterally, as well as the left anterior limb of the internal capsule and the left anterior thalamic radiation. No significant white matter abnormalities were observed in the PD group. Across groups, MD correlated positively with disease severity in all major white matter tracts. These results show widespread changes in white matter tracts in both PSP and MSA patients, even at a mid-point in the disease process, which are not found in patients with PD

    Primary coronary artery bypass surgery in the presence of decreasing preoperative renal function: effect on short-term outcomes

    Background: This study evaluated the impact of decreasing renal function on short-term outcomes in patients undergoing primary coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Methods: The study period was from February 1999 to February 2009. Data on 4050 patients undergoing primary CABG were prospectively collected and analyzed retrospectively. The study population was divided into 3 groups: the CABG:N group, patients with preoperative serum creatinine levels 2 mg/dL (n = 87); and the CABG:D group, patients on dialysis (n = 16). Results: The significant differences between the groups (CABG:D > CABG:RF > CABG:N) in short-term outcomes were with respect to blood product use (P < .001), postoperative acute myocardial infarction (P < .001), pulmonary complications (P .001), infection (P < .001), and death (P < .001). The risk of short-term death (30 days) in the CABG:D group (4/16, 25%) was 25 times greater than that in the CABG:N group (38/3947, 0.96%). Conclusion: CABG in the presence of renal failure is associated with significant morbidity and mortality
