Misassembled Monsters
This thesis is a narrative of personal and material history. Through my work in painting, sculpture, and installation, I seek to share my story of emotional armoring in an attempt to connect to an audience. In my work, I look to my personal memories of growing up in a small, midwestern town and armoring myself with emotional barriers against its social construct of “normalcy.” Inspired by Medieval suits of armor and the characteristics of Goth culture throughout history, I employ my work to present the stage of a theatrical battleground. Creating each of my pieces is a fight for the work, against my own dysfunctional body, and against the fear of appearing abnormal. The following chapters are my exploration into the causes and effects of emotional barriers that turn into psychological cages. I investigate the narrative elements of my work in relation to my fictional narrative—included—and compare my work to that of corresponding artists
Federal Terrorism Risk Insurance
The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 represented a loss for commercial property & casualty insurers that was both unprecedented and unanticipated. After sustaining this record capital loss, the availability of adequate private insurance coverage against future terrorist attacks came into question. Concern over the potential adverse consequences of the lack of availability of insurance against terrorist incidents led to calls for federal intervention in insurance markets. This paper discusses the economic rationale for and against federal intervention in the market, and concludes that the benefits from establishing a temporary transition program, during which the private sector can build capacity and adapt to a dramatically changed environment for terrorism risk, may provide benefits to the economy that exceed the direct and indirect costs.
Green Charging of Electric Vehicles Under a Net-Zero Emissions Policy Transition in California
UC-ITS-2020-08California has many aggressive climate policies, primarily aimed at individual sectors. This study explores untapped policy opportunities for interactions between sectors, specifically between the transportation and the electricity grid. As electric vehicles become more prevalent, their impact on the electricity grid is directly related to the aggregate patterns of vehicle charging. Even without vehicle-to-grid services, shifting of charging patterns can be a potentially important resource to alleviate issues such as renewable intermittency. This study compares, through modeling, projected emissions reductions from managed vs. unmanaged charging. The lion\u2019s share of emissions reduction in the light-duty transportation sector in California will come from electrification, with a cumulative 1 billion tons of CO2 reduction through 2045. Decarbonization of the current grid leads to an additional savings of 125 million tons of CO2 over the same time-period. Potential state policies to exploit synergies between transportation electrification and grid decarbonization could reduce cumulative emissions by another 10 million tons of CO2. These policies include strategic deployment of charging infrastructure, pricing mechanisms, standardizing grid interaction protocols, and supporting grid infrastructure requirements
A qualitative study on healthcare professionals’ perceived barriers to insulin initiation in a multi-ethnic population
Background: Nationwide surveys have shown that the prevalence of diabetes rates in Malaysia have almost doubled in the past ten years; yet diabetes control remains poor and insulin therapy is underutilized. This study aimed to explore healthcare professionals’ views on barriers to starting insulin therapy in people with type 2 diabetes. Methods: Healthcare professionals consisting of general practitioners (n = 11), family medicine specialists (n = 10), medical officers (n = 8), government policy makers (n = 4), diabetes educators (n = 3) and endocrinologists (n = 2) were interviewed. A semi-structured topic guide was used to guide the interviews by trained facilitators. The interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed using a thematic analysis approach. Results: Insulin initiation was found to be affected by patient, healthcare professional and system factors. Patients’ barriers include culture-specific barriers such as the religious purity of insulin, preferred use of complementary medication and perceived lethality of insulin therapy. Healthcare professionals’ barriers include negative attitudes towards insulin therapy and the ‘legacy effect’ of old insulin guidelines; whilst system barriers highlight the lack of resources, language and communication challenges. Conclusions: Tackling the issue of insulin initiation should not only happen during clinical consultations. It requires health education to emphasise the progressive nature of diabetes and the eventuality of insulin therapy at early stage of the illness. Healthcare professionals should be trained how to initiate insulin and communicate effectively with patients from various cultural and religious backgrounds
The 13th Southern Hemisphere Conference on the Teaching and Learning of Undergraduate Mathematics and Statistics
Ngā mihi aroha ki ngā tangata katoa and warm greetings to you all. Welcome to Herenga
Delta 2021, the Thirteenth Southern Hemisphere Conference on the Teaching and Learning
of Undergraduate Mathematics and Statistics.
It has been ten years since the Volcanic Delta Conference in Rotorua, and we are excited to
have the Delta community return to Aotearoa New Zealand, if not in person, then by virtual
means. Although the limits imposed by the pandemic mean that most of this year’s 2021
participants are unable to set foot in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, this has certainly not
stopped interest in this event. Participants have been invited to draw on the concept of
herenga, in Te Reo Māori usually a mooring place where people from afar come to share
their knowledge and experiences. Although many of the participants are still some distance
away, the submissions that have been sent in will continue to stimulate discussion on
mathematics and statistics undergraduate education in the Delta tradition.
The conference invited papers, abstracts and posters, working within the initial themes of
Values and Variables. The range of submissions is diverse, and will provide participants with
many opportunities to engage, discuss, and network with colleagues across the Delta
community. The publications for this thirteenth Delta Conference include publications in the
International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, iJMEST,
(available at https://www.tandfonline.com/journals/tmes20/collections/Herenga-Delta-2021),
the Conference Proceedings, and the Programme (which has created some interesting
challenges around time-zones), by the Local Organizing Committee. Papers in the iJMEST
issue and the Proceedings were peer reviewed by at least two reviewers per paper. Of the
ten submissions to the Proceedings, three were accepted.
We are pleased to now be at the business end of the conference and hope that this event will
carry on the special atmosphere of the many Deltas which have preceded this one. We hope
that you will enjoy this conference, the virtual and social experiences that accompany it, and
take the opportunity to contribute to further enhancing mathematics and statistics
undergraduate education.

The Somatic Genomic Landscape of Glioblastoma
We describe the landscape of somatic genomic alterations based on multi-dimensional and comprehensive characterization of more than 500 glioblastoma tumors (GBMs). We identify several novel mutated genes as well as complex rearrangements of signature receptors including EGFR and PDGFRA. TERT promoter mutations are shown to correlate with elevated mRNA expression, supporting a role in telomerase reactivation. Correlative analyses confirm that the survival advantage of the proneural subtype is conferred by the G-CIMP phenotype, and MGMT DNA methylation may be a predictive biomarker for treatment response only in classical subtype GBM. Integrative analysis of genomic and proteomic profiles challenges the notion of therapeutic inhibition of a pathway as an alternative to inhibition of the target itself. These data will facilitate the discovery of therapeutic and diagnostic target candidates, the validation of research and clinical observations and the generation of unanticipated hypotheses that can advance our molecular understanding of this lethal cancer

Smart Charging of Electric Vehicles Will Reduce Emissions and Costs in a 100% Renewable Energy Future in California
California has goals of achieving 100% renewable energy by 2045 and 100% zero-emission vehicle sales by 2035. Electric vehicles will introduce significant new demand for electricity at the same time the state’s electricity grid is incorporating more intermittent energy sources, raising concerns about grid reliability. However, the flexibility of electric vehicle charging provides a potentially powerful asset in mitigating the challenges of a renewable energybased electricity grid. Smart charging—adapting electric vehicle charging based on the conditions of the power system and the needs of the vehicle user—can take advantage of this flexibility by charging vehicles when renewable energy is readily available. Researchers at UC Davis simulated 100% electric vehicle adoption and a 100% renewable energy-powered electricity grid by 2045 in California. They then compared a scenario of regular electric vehicle charging behavior with a scenario of advanced, flexible, smart charging under which charging is aligned with renewable energy availability, to understand how smart vehicle charging could benefit the electricity grid
