    Uniqueness, Stability, and Comparative Statics in Rationalizable Walrasian Markets

    This paper studies the extent to which qualitative features of Walrasian equilibria are refutable given a finite data set. In particular, we consider the hypothesis that the observed data are Walrasian equilibria in which each price vector is locally stable under tatonnement. Our main result shows that a finite set of observations of prices, individual incomes and aggregate consumption vectors is rationalizable in an economy with smooth characteristics if and only if it is rationalizable in an economy in which each observed price vector is locally unique and stable under tatonnement. Moreover, the equilibrium correspondence is locally monotone in a neighborhood of each observed equilibrium in these economies. Thus the hypotheses that equilibria are locally stable under tatonnement, equilibrium prices are locally unique and equilibrium comparative statics are locally monotone are not refutable with a finite data set.

    Morphology of Pictorial News: The Chameleonic Attributes

    This study looked at the relationship between print media contents and the publicā€™s attitude of appreciating news. Accountable facts and records used in this paper were strictly directed to qualifying press pictures as news. In conducting this study, the descriptive research design was used. The result of the hypothesis was tested with 200 readers by using Chi-square statistical calculation. The pictures selected were purposively investigated to establish the influence they possessed. After a thorough analysis, it was concluded that the issue of effective presence of news pictures surfaced because of sharing qualitative level of selective perception that had existed between the news consumers and media publications. It was recommended that irrespective of the medium used to express news worthiness, the chameleonic nomenclature of news pictures should retain neutrality and maintain investigative inkling for this curious news age. 49.7% respondents read news that had pictures in them than those without pictures. A situation, where press picture connected written news, relished aesthetical glamour and cognitive nostalgia, was uncovered. The summarized efforts, disregarded freehandedness and prioritized ethical ideology in the overcrowded print media racketeering. Hence, institutionalized professionalism was strongly advocated.     An 11.6 Micron Keck Search For Exozodiacal Dust

    We have begun an observational program to search nearby stars for dust disks that are analogous to the disk of zodiacal dust that fills the interior of our solar system. We imaged six nearby main-sequence stars with the Keck telescope at 11.6 microns, correcting for atmosphere-induced wavefront aberrations and deconvolving the point spread function via classical speckle analysis. We compare our data to a simple model of the zodiacal dust in our own system based on COBE/DIRBE observations and place upper limits on the density of exozodiacal dust in these systems.Comment: 10 pages, figure1, figure2, figure3, and figures 4a-

    Non-rainfall moisture inputs in the Knersvlakte: Methodology and preliminary findings

    Dew, fog/mist and water vapour adsorption, the 3 vectors by which non-rainfall water can be added to soil water, may play a critical role in ecosystem function in arid zones. This paper explores a methodology for overcoming the challenges of measuring small daily inputs of non-rainfall water in the harsh environment of the Knersvlakte on the west coast of South Africa. An automatic micro-lysimeter (MLS) ā€“ an experimental arrangement of a sensitive electro-mechanical load cell, suitable electronic amplification and signal conditioning, and a microcontroller was developed. A microcomputer was employed for overall system control and data logging. Initial field work took place between late September and November 2006 on Arizona Farm, 30 km north of Vanrhynsdorp. In March 2007, subsequent work began at the Ratelgat BIOTA observatory. Manual soil weight sampling corresponded well with theoretical dew maximums, with measured maximum and minimum dew/fog of 0.4 mm and 0.08 mm (Ā±0.08 mm) (both in September 2006). Measurements from the first prototype MLS were marred by large (Ā± 0.24 mm) error figures, signal dropout from the analog to digital converter, and insufficient range at the required resolution. The subsequent prototype (field tested in March 2007 and still in use) provides much smaller errors (Ā± 0.05 mm). Calibration testing at Ratelgat indicates maximum overnight dew/fog contributions of 0.35 mm (Ā±0.05 mm), which corresponds with theoretical calculations as well as field measurements in other arid zones. Maximum dew/fog derived soil water occurs between 07:00 and 09:15. Surprisingly, soil weight, as a consequence of dew/fog inputs, starts to increase shortly after 17:20. These are preliminary findings and longer term testing and validation are ongoing at present.     A First Principles Theory of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance J-Coupling in solid-state systems

    A method to calculate NMR J-coupling constants from first principles in extended systems is presented. It is based on density functional theory and is formulated within a planewave-pseudopotential framework. The all-electron properties are recovered using the projector augmented wave approach. The method is validated by comparison with existing quantum chemical calculations of solution-state systems and with experimental data.     Results of 1/4-Scale Experiments. Vapor Simulant And Liquid Jet A Tests

    A quarter-scale engineering model of the center wing tank (CWT) of a 747-100 was constructed. This engineering model replicated the compartmentalization, passageways, and venting to the atmosphere. The model was designed to scale the fluid dynamical and combustion aspects of the explosion, not the structural failure of the beams or spars. The effect of structural failure on combustion was examined by using model beams and spars with deliberately engineered weak connections to the main tank structure. The model was filled with a simulant fuel (a mixture of propane and hydrogen) and ignited with a hot wire. The simulant fuel was chosen on the basis of laboratory testing to model the combustion characteristics (pressure rise and flame speed) of Jet A vapor created by a Jet A liquid layer at 50C at an altitude of 13.8 kft. A series of experiments was carried out in this model in order to: (a) investigate combustion in a CWT geometry; and (b) provide guidance to the TWA 800 crash investigation. The results of the experiments were observed with high-speed film, video, and still cameras, fast and slow pressure sensors, thermocouples, photodetectors, and motion sensors. A special pseudo-schlieren system was used to visualize flame propagation within the tank. This report describes the test program, facility, instrumentation, the first 30 experiments, comparisons between experiments, and performance of the instrumentation; then examines the significance of these results to the TWA 800 crash investigation. The key results of this study are: Flame Motion: The motion of flame was dominated by the effects of turbulence created by jetting through the passageways and vent stringers. A very rapid combustion event (lasting 10 to 20 ms) occurred once the flame traveled outside of the ignition bay and interacted with the turbulent flow. Most of the gas within the tank was burned during this rapid event. Compartments: The combustion time decreased with an increasing number of compartments (bays) within the tank. With six bays, combustion took only 100 to 150 ms to be completed from the time of ignition until the end of the rapid combustion phase. The total combustion event was three to four times shorter with compartments than without. Venting: Venting to the outside of the tank through the model vent stringers had a negligible effect on the combustion progress or on the peak pressure reached at the end of the burn. Ignition Location: Variation of the ignition location produced distinctive pressure loads on the structural components. Liquid Fuel: Lofting of a cold liquid fuel layer was produced by the combustion-induced gas motion. Although this spray of liquid eventually ignited and burned, it did not contribute to the pressure loading. Structural Failure: Structural failure resulted in flame acceleration, decreasing the overall combustion time. TWA 800 Investigation: The pressure loads were sufficiently high, up to 4 bar, and the combustion events were sufficiently short, that the forward portion (spanwise beam 3, front spar) of the CWT structure would fail as a direct consequence of the explosion. A combination of pressure loads was produced in some tests consistent with the TWA 800 wreckage. Replica tests, structural modeling, and sensitivity studies on fuel concentration are needed before any conclusions can be drawn about probable ignition locations. Cargo Bay: Tests with a simplified model of a half-full cargo bay indicated that repeated pressure waves with an amplitude of 1 bar or less are produced when an explosion scenario similar to TWA 800 is tested. Future Testing: Future studies should include replica tests, tests with Jet A vapor and warm liquid Jet A layers, and sensitivity tests to examine ignition location, fuel concentration, and vent area perturbations. Summary: Explosion tests in a 747-100 CWT model reveal that a very complex pattern of combustion occurs due the interaction of the flame and the flow-generated turbulence. A wide range of structural load patterns occur, depending on the location of the ignition source. Some of these load patterns are consistent with damage believed to be associated with the initial explosion event in TWA 800. Sensitivity of the loading to the ignition location indicates that narrowing down the ignition location in TWA 800 may be possible. However, the complexity of the combustion and structural failure processes in the actual center wing tank mandates extremely careful consideration of the uncertainties that enter into this process

    Automatic infrasound signal detection using the Hough transform

    The Hough transform is a mathematical device that allows the retrieval of parametric curve information from binary-pixelated data in the presence of noise. This slope-intercept transform maps each point in the image space S into a straight line in parameter space P and has the very useful property that all points in S that lie along the same straight-line map to the same number of straight lines in P with a common intersection point. Thus with a suitable counting procedure, the problem of extended straight-line detection in noisy pixelated data becomes one of local peak finding, a problem that may be substantially more tractable. In this study, an algorithm that utilizes the Hough transform for the detection of signals in International Monitoring System style infrasonic array data by seeking periods of constant backazimuth that are associated with coherent acoustic signals is described. A system of synthetic signal implants is used to assess the performance of the detection algorithm by generating a set of pseudo Receiver Operator Characteristic curves. A feature of the detection algorithm is the ability to accommodate full three-dimensional array geometry

    Ex-vivo perfusion bioassay : an excellent technique to measure the bioactivity of inhalable insulin coated microcrystals

    Purpose: To measure the bioactivity of inhalable insulin coated microcrystals using a perfusion bioassay that measures its vasodilatory effect on smooth muscle arterial tissue. Methods: The bioactivity of an insulin protein coated microcrystal (PCMC), a potential candidate for pulmonary drug delivery and commercial insulin was determined on a Danish Myo Tech P110 pressure myograph system. 12 week old Mesenteric resistance arteries from Male Wistar rats were isolated and immersed in a physiological salt solution (PSS) and attached to 2 opposing hollow glass micro-cannula (outer diameter 80 microns). The PSS was gradually warmed to 37Ā°C (at a pressure less than 5mm Hg) for 1hr. Subsequently the pressure was increased up to 40mm Hg over a period 15 minutes and equilibrated for a further 15 minutes after gassing with 95%O2 / 5%CO2 to achieve a pH of 7.4 at 37Ā°C. After normalisation by two washes of 123mM KCl and exposure to 1-10mM noradrenaline the arteries were exposed intraluminally to each insulin preparation by gradual infusion directly into the lumen via a fetal microcannulae inserted to the tip of the glass mounting cannula, at a constant pressure. Results: The preliminary results (full cummulative response curve yet to be determined) demonstrate insulin mediated relaxation to noradrenaline preconstriction. The level of constriction drops from 100% to 42% as the concentration of insulin increases from -11 to -9 Log M for the PCMC compared with a drop from 100 % to 65% for the commercial insulin preparation. However the more potent vasodilatory effect found for the insulin PCMC is more likely to be a result of variance introduced in each dilution step than a real increase in potency. Conclusion: The perfusion bioassay technique provides an excellent method of measuring insulin bioactivity and indicates the insulin loaded on the microcrystal support is fully active

    Linking healthcare associated norovirus outbreaks: a molecular epidemiologic method for investigating transmission.

    BACKGROUND: Noroviruses are highly infectious pathogens that cause gastroenteritis in the community and in semi-closed institutions such as hospitals. During outbreaks, multiple units within a hospital are often affected, and a major question for control programs is: are the affected units part of the same outbreak or are they unrelated transmission events? In practice, investigators often assume a transmission link based on epidemiological observations, rather than a systematic approach to tracing transmission.Here, we present a combined molecular and statistical method for assessing:1) whether observed clusters provide evidence of local transmission and2) the probability that anecdotally|linked outbreaks truly shared a transmission event. METHODS: 76 healthcare associated outbreaks were observed in an active and prospective surveillance scheme of 15 hospitals in the county of Avon, England from April 2002 to March 2003. Viral RNA from 64 out of 76 specimens from distinct outbreaks was amplified by reverse transcription-PCR and was sequenced in the polymerase (ORF 1) and capsid (ORF 2) regions. The genetic diversity, at the nucleotide level, was analysed in relation to the epidemiological patterns. RESULTS: Two out of four genetic and epidemiological clusters of outbreaks were unlikely to have occurred by chance alone, thus suggesting local transmission. There was anecdotal epidemiological evidence of a transmission link among 5 outbreaks pairs. By combining this epidemiological observation with viral sequence data, the evidence of a link remained convincing in 3 of these pairs. These results are sensitive to prior beliefs of the strength of epidemiological evidence especially when the outbreak strains are common in the background population. CONCLUSION: The evidence suggests that transmission between hospitals units does occur. Using the proposed criteria, certain hypothesized transmission links between outbreaks were supported while others were refuted. The combined molecular/epidemiologic approach presented here could be applied to other viral populations and potentially to other pathogens for a more thorough view of transmission
