    Bolometric and UV Light Curves of Core-Collapse Supernovae

    The Swift UV-Optical Telescope (UVOT) has been observing Core-Collapse Supernovae (CCSNe) of all subtypes in the UV and optical since 2005. We present here 50 CCSNe observed with the Swift UVOT, analyzing their UV properties and behavior. Where we have multiple UV detections in all three UV filters (\lambda c = 1928 - 2600 \AA), we generate early time bolometric light curves, analyze the properties of these light curves, the UV contribution to them, and derive empirical corrections for the UV-flux contribution to optical-IR based bolometric light curves

    SELTEC: Service and Experiential Learning Through Engagement in the Community: A Level I Fieldwork Model: Part 2

    The SELTEC model of Level I fieldwork was developed and published in 2020. The SELTEC model combines service and experiential learning to benefit student learners, the educational system, and the community. The purpose of the study was to determine students’ perceptions of a SELTEC model experience compared to a traditional Level I fieldwork experience. The research team administered a 24-item survey to thirty students who participated in the study. All participants received both a traditional one-week and SELTEC level I fieldwork experience during their occupational therapy education at Arkansas State University. Seventy-nine percent (n=23) of the respondents selected the SELTEC model to meet the question criteria the majority of the time, while 20% (n=6) selected the traditional experience. The study results indicate that the SELTEC model was preferred over the traditional FW model. The results show the experiences offered in the SELTEC model prepare students for occupational therapy practice in ways not offered in a traditional FW model

    Securing effective and quality fieldwork experiences is an area of concern in occupational therapy education. Academic Fieldwork Coordinators and occupational therapy programs are looking for new models and innovative methods of instruction to provide fieldwork experiences to students. A team of occupational therapy faculty developed and implemented an innovative Level I fieldwork model called Service and Experiential Learning Through Engagement in the Community (SELTEC). The model incorporates service and experiential learning while engaging the occupational therapy program and faculty educators in the community. The SELTEC model utilizes the student, educational system, and community to promote a service relationship to provide effective quality fieldwork education. The objective of the paper is to a) introduce the SELTEC model units and principles, and b) provide the application of the model across three practice areas. The model serves as a solution for occupational therapy programs by providing Level I fieldwork experiences within strategic clinical partnerships while utilizing faculty-led instruction to facilitate peer-to-peer, experiential, and service learning opportunities during fieldwork education

    Growing Up Financially Literate: A Lifelong Curriculum

    This work ventures to find a solution to one source of economic instability: financial illiteracy. The inability to manage money, caused by a lack of education, has led to poor decision making. These bad decisions can lead to a number of financial hardships, as well as emotional and physical problems. Better education can combat all of these symptoms and lead to a healthier financial future. Growing Up Financially Literate attempts to help close the curriculum gap surrounding financial literacy by recognizing that the gap does not only exist in a single age group. Financial education cannot stop with any one age group; it must be a lifelong curriculum. Growing Up Financially Literate is about starting out young with a strong foundation of basics and then growing into more complex, yet still very practical, concepts of financial literacy. Elementary school students are taught the basic uses of money and why one should save. High school students learn the true cost of living, how it compares to real wages, and how to ensure a brighter financial future. Adults are taught to save money in an unusual way: by learning about, and taking advantage of, tax credits

    Using Unoccupied Aerial Vehicles to estimate availability and group size error for aerial surveys of coastal dolphins

    Aerial surveys are frequently used to estimate the abundance of marine mammals, but their accuracy is dependent upon obtaining a measure of the availability of animals to visual detection. Existing methods for characterizing availability have limitations and do not necessarily reflect true availability. Here, we present a method of using small, vessel-launched, multi-rotor Unoccupied Aerial Vehicles (UAVs, or drones) to collect video of dolphins to characterize availability and investigate error surrounding group size estimates. We collected over 20 h of aerial video of dive-surfacing behaviour across 32 encounters with Australian humpback dolphins Sousa sahulensis off north-western Australia. Mean surfacing and dive periods were 7.85 sec (se = 0.26) and 39.27 sec (se = 1.31) respectively. Dolphin encounters were split into 56 focal follows of consistent group composition to which example approaches to estimating availability were applied. Non-instantaneous availability estimates, assuming a 7 sec observation window, ranged between 0.22 and 0.88, with a mean availability of 0.46 (CV = 0.34). Availability tended to increase with increasing group size. We found a downward bias in group size estimation, with true group size typically one individual more than would have been estimated by a human observer during a standard aerial survey. The variability of availability estimates between focal follows highlights the importance of sampling across a variety of group sizes, compositions and environmental conditions. Through data re-sampling exercises, we explored the influence of sample size on availability estimates and their precision, with results providing an indication of target sample sizes to minimize bias in future research. We show that UAVs can provide an effective and relatively inexpensive method of characterizing dolphin availability with several advantages over existing approaches. The example estimates obtained for humpback dolphins are within the range of values obtained for other shallow-water, small cetaceans, and will directly inform a government-run program of aerial surveys in the region

    Ex-vivo perfusion bioassay : an excellent technique to measure the bioactivity of inhalable insulin coated microcrystals

    Purpose: To measure the bioactivity of inhalable insulin coated microcrystals using a perfusion bioassay that measures its vasodilatory effect on smooth muscle arterial tissue. Methods: The bioactivity of an insulin protein coated microcrystal (PCMC), a potential candidate for pulmonary drug delivery and commercial insulin was determined on a Danish Myo Tech P110 pressure myograph system. 12 week old Mesenteric resistance arteries from Male Wistar rats were isolated and immersed in a physiological salt solution (PSS) and attached to 2 opposing hollow glass micro-cannula (outer diameter 80 microns). The PSS was gradually warmed to 37°C (at a pressure less than 5mm Hg) for 1hr. Subsequently the pressure was increased up to 40mm Hg over a period 15 minutes and equilibrated for a further 15 minutes after gassing with 95%O2 / 5%CO2 to achieve a pH of 7.4 at 37°C. After normalisation by two washes of 123mM KCl and exposure to 1-10mM noradrenaline the arteries were exposed intraluminally to each insulin preparation by gradual infusion directly into the lumen via a fetal microcannulae inserted to the tip of the glass mounting cannula, at a constant pressure. Results: The preliminary results (full cummulative response curve yet to be determined) demonstrate insulin mediated relaxation to noradrenaline preconstriction. The level of constriction drops from 100% to 42% as the concentration of insulin increases from -11 to -9 Log M for the PCMC compared with a drop from 100 % to 65% for the commercial insulin preparation. However the more potent vasodilatory effect found for the insulin PCMC is more likely to be a result of variance introduced in each dilution step than a real increase in potency. Conclusion: The perfusion bioassay technique provides an excellent method of measuring insulin bioactivity and indicates the insulin loaded on the microcrystal support is fully active

    EFFECT OF TREADMILL RUNNING ON CARDIAC AND SKELETAL MUSCLE METABOLISM AND RIGHT VENTRICLE INFLAMMATION IN RATS WITH PULMONARY ARTERIAL HYPERTENSION

    poster abstractIt has been suggested that a shift from oxidative to non-oxidative (glycolytic) metabolism promotes a right ventricle (RV) and skeletal muscle dysfunction in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), contributing to their reduced exercise tolerance. Exercise training may ameliorate this glycolytic switch in PAH as it does for other cardiopulmonary diseases. However, whether exercise-induced cardiac stress also promotes detrimental RV inflammation in PAH has not yet been thoroughly examined. We hypothesized that exercise training will promote a shift back towards the more efficient oxidative metabolism in cardiac and skeletal muscle of PAH rats and that 45 minutes of exercise at a prescribed moderate intensity will not promote greater RV inflammation in PAH rats. Tissues were obtained from monocrotaline-induced PAH and healthy control rats immediately following a 45 min treadmill run (75% VO2max) that concluded a 4 week treadmill familiarization/running program (15-45 min, 4x/wk). A group of unexercised PAH and healthy rats served as sedentary controls. Immunofluorescent staining (IF) for inflammatory markers CD45 (lymphocytes) and CD68 (macrophages) in cryofixed RV sections were used to assess the acute inflammatory response to exercise. In fixed soleus and RV sections, IF for the glucose transporter Glut1, and for capillary marker CD31, were used as indicators of glycolytic metabolism and tissue capillarization, respectively. Data thus far indicates no greater acute exercise-induced RV inflammation in PAH rats compared to healthy rats. We observed higher expression of Glut1 and lower capillarization in the RV and soleus of PAH rats, indicative of a shift toward greater dependency on non-oxidative metabolism. However, since Glut1 levels for exercised rats were measured in tissue harvested immediately following a run bout, evaluation of a chronic training effect on Glut1 expression is potentially confounded by the acute exercise effect and therefore remains to be investigated in a follow-up study

    Previous research on sensitization in Aplysia was based entirely on unnatural noxious stimuli, usually electric shock, until our laboratory found that a natural noxious stimulus, a single sublethal lobster attack, causes short-term sensitization. We here extend that finding by demonstrating that multiple lobster attacks induce long-term sensitization (\u3e= 24 h) as well as similar, although not identical, neuronal correlates as observed after electric shock. Together these findings establish long-and short-term sensitization caused by sublethal predator attack as a natural equivalent to sensitization caused by artificial stimuli
