A formal proof of modal completeness for provability logic

    Get PDF
This work presents a formalized proof of modal completeness for G\"odel-L\"ob provability logic (GL) in the HOL Light theorem prover. We describe the code we developed, and discuss some details of our implementation, focusing on our choices in structuring proofs which make essential use of the tools of HOL Light and which differ in part from the standard strategies found in main textbooks covering the topic in an informal setting. Moreover, we propose a reflection on our own experience in using this specific theorem prover for this formalization task, with an analysis of pros and cons of reasoning within and about the formal system for GL we implemented in our code

HP-LT metamorphism in Elba Island: Implications for the geodynamic evolution of the inner Northern Apennines (Italy)

The inner Northern Apennines belt (i.e., northern Tyrrhenian Sea and Tuscany) is an Alpine chain affectedby high-P metamorphic conditions during its evolution. Although Elba Island is structurally located closeto the Adria-Europe suture zone, for several authors it represents a sector of the orogen affected bylow-P metamorphism. The involvement of Elba Island tectonic units in high-P metamorphism was onlysuspected for the sparse presence of phengitic white mica in the metasedimentary rocks. This paperpresents the first clear evidence of high-P and low-T metamorphism found in metabasite rocks embed-ded in the Cretaceous calcschist of eastern Elba Island. Mineral composition of metabasite includesGln + Cpx + Ep + Ab + Act + Qtz + Ilm ± Ti-oxide ± Spn and is indicative of a former equilibration in the epi-dote blueschist subfacies and subsequent retrogression in the greenschist facies. Recorded metamorphicconditions are P = 0.9–1.0 GPa and T = 330–350◦C. Tectonic discrimination using immobile elements inthe metabasite does not point to an oceanic setting. As a consequence, the metasedimentary succes-sion containing metabasite is explained as belonging to the Tuscan continental domain and not to theLigurian-Piedmont Ocean, as previously interpreted. Our results have two significant implications: (i)it is confirmed and strengthened that the tectonic stacking of the Elba Island units did not occur in alow-pressure context; (ii) Elba Island is now completely reconciled in the tectonic and metamorphicevolution of the inner Northern Apennines

Analysing Multiple QoS Attributes in Parallel Design Patterns-Based Applications

    Get PDF
Parallel design patterns can be fruitfully combined to develop parallel software applications. Different combinations of patterns can feature different QoS while being functionally equivalent. To support application developers in selecting the best combinations of patterns to develop their applications, we hereby propose a probabilistic approach that permits analysing, at design time, multiple QoS attributes of parallel design patterns-based application. We also present a proof-of-concept implementation of our approach, together with some experimental results

Donepezil-like multifunctional agents: Design, synthesis, molecular modeling and biological evaluation

Currently available drugs against Alzheimer's disease (AD) are only able to ameliorate the disease symptoms resulting in a moderate improvement in memory and cognitive function without any efficacy in preventing and inhibiting the progression of the pathology. In an effort to obtain disease-modifying anti-Alzheimer's drugs (DMAADs) following the multifactorial nature of AD, we have recently developed multifunctional compounds. We herein describe the design, synthesis, molecular modeling and biological evaluation of a new series of donepezil-related compounds possessing metal chelating properties, and being capable of targeting different enzymatic systems related to AD (cholinesterases, ChEs, and monoamine oxidase A, MAO-A). Among this set of analogues compound 5f showed excellent ChEs inhibition potency and a selective MAO-A inhibition (vs MAO-B) coupled to strong complexing properties for zinc and copper ions, both known to be involved in the progression of AD. Moreover, 5f exhibited moderate antioxidant properties as found by in vitro assessment. This compound represents a novel donepezil–hydroxyquinoline hybrid with DMAAD profile paving the way to the development of a novel class of drugs potentially able to treat AD

    Configurations of web services

    Get PDF
The quest for sound foundations for the orchestration of web services is still open. To a great extent its relevance comes from the possibility of defining formal semantics for new language standards (like BPEL4WS or WS-CDL) in this emerging and challenging technology. As a step in that direction, this paper resorts to a notion of configuration, developed by the authors in the context of a Reo-like exogenous coordination model for software components, to formally express service orchestration. The latter is regarded as involving both the architectural assembly of independent services and the description of their interactions.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) - PURe Project, contract POSI/ICHS/44304/2002
