The article provides an edition and translation of a soghitha attributed to ‘Isaac the Teacher’, to be found in Sinai Syriacus 10. In view of the large number of unpublished memre attributed to one or other of the three fifth- and sixth-century Syriac poets name Isaac, an Appendix provides an alphabetical list of the incipits of all memre attributed to an Isaac which are to be found in early manuscripts datable to the sixth and seventh centuries
A fragment of the Harklean version of St Matthew’s Gospel in the Monastery of Mar Musa
The monastery of Mar Musa (Syria) possesses a small Syriac fragment on parchment. The text is identified as parts of Matthew 22 in the Harklean version. The fragment can be dated to the mid 12th century, and so it represents the second oldest known manuscript connected with the monastery. An edition and translation of the fragment is provided.
Syriac authors took over and adapted the ancient Mesopotamian genre of precedence dispute, transforming it into a dispute or dialogue, with theological overtones, which is normally between biblical characters. A small number of these dialogue poems concern saints, rather than biblical characters, and it is one of these, where the protagonists are St Marina and Satan, which is re-published here in a critical edition, together with three soghyatha which concern the life of St Marina.
The Christology of the Church of the East
After setting out the background of the early history of the Church of the East, this contribution focuses on the Syriac sources of the fifth to seventh centuries which are witnesses to the development of the ‘two-nature’ Christology of the Church of the East, situated outside the Roman Empire during this formative period. Special attention is paid to the ambiguous term qnoma, which is used to render hypostasis in the Chalcedonian Definition, but which, for native Syriac authors, has the different sense of ‘defining characteristic’. The problematic designation ‘Nestorian’ should be avoided since it implies completely different things to different parties. Some final thoughts are given to the ongoing significance of the tradition of the Church of the East in its various present-day manifestations
A Syriac Dialogue between Joseph and Benjamin
Among the many Syriac poems on the biblical Patriarch Joseph are two Dialogue poems, one between Joseph and Potiphar’s Wife, the other between Joseph and Benjamin. The latter, for which the scenario is the moment when Joseph reveals his true identity to his brothers (Gen. 45:1-15), is edited here from late manuscripts belonging to both East and West Syriac tradition, accompanied by an English translation
Next-to-Leading Order Corrections to Single Top Quark Production and Decay at the Tevatron: 2. -channel Process
We present a study of the -channel mode of single top quark production at
the upgraded Tevatron collider, including the next-to-leading order
(NLO) QCD corrections to the production and the decay of a single top quark.
The narrow width approximation was adopted in order to preserve the spin of the
top quark in its production and decay. We discuss the effects of different
contributions on the inclusive cross section as well as various
kinematic distributions after imposing the relevant cuts to select -channel
single top signal events.Comment: 46 pages, 47 figures. One typo in LaTeX source file is correcte
