    NO LAUGHING MATTER: POLITICAL HUMOR AND MEDIA IN EGYPT’S JANUARY 25TH REVOLUTION

    The January 25th Revolution in Egypt began in 2011 when protestors took to the streets in Cairo and other Egyptian cities demanding that President Hosni Mubarak resign. They were armed with a savvy tool: humor. This study is a historical and theoretical approach to understanding political humor’s position as a space for politically subversive conversation in Egypt in the decade leading up to the January 25th Revolution, as well as during the revolution itself. Humor, media, and social movement theories are mobilized within this thesis to explain humor’s unique position within Egyptian society and its function within subversive, informal political networks called counterpublics. This thesis demonstrates the ways in which political humor acted as a vehicle through which people expressed more direct criticisms of Mubarak’s regime in a manner that included more people into the insurgent conversations taking place among revolutionary and non-revolutionary Egyptians between 2000 and 2011

    SyMAPse: Design and Evaluation of an Augmented Reality Map

    Interactive geographic maps are today widely available, but remain mostly limited to standard interaction contexts. We introduce SyMAPse [3], a spatial augmented reality map, in which a virtual map is projected onto a physical piece of paper. In a preliminary study we compared interaction techniques based on multi-touch, tangible and spatial modalities for three common map functions: zooming, panning, and changing the basemap. Our results suggest that object-based and spatial interaction may be advantageous over multi-touch in our augmented reality setup. We are currently investigating the rich interaction possibilities provided by this augmented reality setup

    An anti-siglec-8 antibody depletes sputum eosinophils from asthmatic subjects and inhibits lung mast cells

    Background Sialic acid-binding immunoglobulin-like lectin (Siglec)-8 is expressed on mast cells and eosinophils, but information about Siglec-8 expression and function in the lung is limited. A humanized antibody, AK002, targeting Siglec-8 is undergoing development for treatment of diseases associated with mast cell and eosinophil-driven inflammation. Objective To characterize Siglec-8 expression in the airway in asthma and determine whether antibodies that target Siglec-8 (S8mAbs) can decrease airway eosinophils in asthma or inhibit lung mast cell activation. Methods Gene expression profiling and flow cytometry were used to characterize Siglec-8 expression in sputum cells from stable asthma. An antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) assay was used to determine whether an S8mAb can decrease eosinophils in sputum from asthma patients ex vivo. A mast cell activation assay was used to determine whether an S8mAb can inhibit mast cell activation in human lung tissue ex vivo. Results Gene expression for Siglec-8 is increased in sputum cells in asthma and correlates with gene expression for eosinophils and mast cells. Gene expression for Siglec-8 is inversely and significantly correlated with measures of airflow obstruction in asthma patients. Siglec-8 is prominently expressed on the surface of eosinophils and mast cells in sputum. S8mAbs decrease eosinophils in sputum from patients with asthma and inhibit Fc epsilon R1-activated mast cells in lung tissues. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance Siglec-8 is highly expressed on eosinophils and mast cells in asthmatic sputum and targeting Siglec-8 with an antibody is a plausible strategy to decrease sputum eosinophils and inhibit lung mast cells in asthma

    Copyright © Cambridge University Press 1997Julian Brown's famous analysis of what he termed the Insular system of scripts marked out a number of routes, now well trodden, through the debris of undated and unlocalized manuscript material from the pre-Viking-Age British Isles. Ever since, the best hope for students of palaeography seeking to date and localize examples of early Insular minuscule has been to follow Brown's classification and identify them as Type A or B, Northumbrian or Southumbrian, and Phase I or II. Brown's schema, however, offered orientation rather than a map. As with any typology, it depends on a very few fixed points, themselves unusual because of their lack of anonymity: gospelbooks from Ireland and Northumbria dated by the survival of rare colophons, manuscripts connected with St Boniface which show the operation of a unique editorial mind. Although Brown's system has been successfully applied to the output of scriptoria whose influences, practices, connections, even locations remain mostly unknown, complications inevitably arise. This article concerns one of them, the recycling in Phase II of a type of minuscule displaying the cursiveness and capriciousness characteristic of Phase I: Type B minuscule as illustrated by the script of St Boniface

    Nurturing lifelong learning in communities through the National University of Lesotho: prospects and challenges

    This paper analyses one aspect of a pan-African action research project called ITMUA (Implementing the Third Mission of Universities in Africa). This particular paper draws on the data from that project to explore the National University of Lesotho’s contribution to lifelong learning in its communities. It provides background information on the ITMUA initiative and analyses interview and focus group responses to two case studies in terms of their contribution to lifelong learning. It uses, as its analytical framework, a modified version of Mbigi’s African perspective on the four De Lors’ ‘pillars’, by adding a fifth pillar, courtesy of Torres. The paper argues that community engagement is a two-way process between universities and their wider constituencies with opportunities for mutual lifelong learning. But there are also challenges of understanding and process which must be addressed if the full range of these lifelong learning pillars is to be accommodated within African contexts. The paper provides an introduction to the history of community engagement in Africa as a university mission, followed by a brief discussion of lifelong learning within African perspectives. After describing the particular context of Lesotho, the concept of community service and community engagement in contemporary African contexts introduces the action research project and the case studies. The final part of the paper presents and discusses the research findings
