    Predictors of adherence to a 12-week exercise program among men treated for prostate cancer: ENGAGE study

    Understanding the factors that influence adherence to exercise programs is necessary to develop effective interventions for people with cancer. We examined the predictors of adherence to a supervised exercise program for participants in the ENGAGE study – a cluster randomized controlled trial that assessed the efficacy of a clinician-referred 12-week exercise program among men treated for prostate cancer. Demographic, clinical, behavioral, and psychosocial data from 52 participants in the intervention group were collected at baseline through self-report and medical records. Adherence to the supervised exercise program was assessed through objective attendance records. Adherence to the supervised exercise program was 80.3%. In the univariate analyses, cancer-specific quality of life subscales (role functioning r = 0.37, P = 0.01; sexual activity r = 0.26, P = 0.06; fatigue r = −0.26, P = 0.06, and hormonal symptoms r = −0.31, P = 0.03) and education (d = −0.60, P = 0.011) were associated with adherence. In the subsequent multivariate analysis, role functioning (B = 0.309, P = 0.019) and hormonal symptoms (B = −0.483, P = 0.054) independently predicted adherence. Men who experienced more severe hormonal symptoms had lower levels of adherence to the exercise program. Those who experienced more positive perceptions of their ability to perform daily tasks and leisure activities had higher levels of adherence to the exercise program. Hormonal symptoms and role functioning need to be considered when conducting exercise programs for men who have been treated for prostate cancer

    Investigation into the reaction of reactive dyes with carboxylate salts and the application of carboxylate-modified reactive dyes to cotton

    Ink-jet printing of cellulosic fabrics with reactive dyes typically requires that the fabric is pretreated with alkali, prior to printing, to facilitate efficient fixation of the dye. In this paper we evaluate the use of sodium formate and other carboxylate salts as a neutral (pH 6.5) pretreatment process. The thickened, prepared-for-print pad liquor contained at least 50 gdm⁝³ of the selected carboxylate salt and was applied to the cotton fabrics by a pad-dry procedure. The fabric was then ink-jet printed with reactive dye inks, followed by standard steaming and washing-off processes. The pH of the carboxylate salt pretreatment was 6.5 and the aqueous extracts from the print fabrics at the end of the steaming process remained at pH 6.5. It was observed that even at pH 6.5, in the presence of selected carboxylates, significant reactive dye fixation could be achieved on a cotton substrate, whereas in the absence of the carboxylate, very little or even zero fixation was achieved. Infrared and capillary electrophoresis analyses of model reactions of reactive dyes with the carboxylate salts indicated that reactive ester residues were formed, and which subsequently promoted reaction with the cellulosic substrates. In addition to improving reactive dye fixation in ink-jet printing, the carboxylate-modified dyes were also demonstrated to improve long-liquor dyeing properties on cotton substrates. As an extension of this carboxylate-based printing process, the incorporation of lithium acetate (100 gdm⁝³) into the ink formulation was further studied and it was demonstrated that the necessity for a preparative pretreatment process could be eliminated

    Surface chemical and colorimetric analysis of reactively dyed cellulosic fabric. The effect of ISO 105 CO9 laundering and the implications for waste cellulosic recycling

    Previous studies have established that the application of crosslinking dyes and easy care finishes to cotton can significantly reduce the dissolution of waste cotton in solvents, such as N-Methylmorpholine oxide, and limit the potential recycling of cellulosic materials through the Lyocell fibre regeneration process. In this investigation the surface chemical compositions of three reactive dyed Tencel fabrics were studied using X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and the presence of the dye at the fibre surface demonstrated. The effect of the ISO 105 C09 oxidative-bleach fading test on the azo and anthraquinone chromophoric species was established by both surface chemical and colorimetric analyses. At low dye application levels the C. I. Reactive Black 5 and C. I. Reactive Red 228 dyed fabrics (azo chromophore) exhibited obvious colour fade while the anthraquinone-based C. I. Reactive Blue 19 dyed fabric was resistant to colour fade. However it is apparent that although some of the covalently bound dye will be removed during “first life” usage, most of the reactive colorant will remain bound to the cotton and will therefore need to be stripped from the waste garments to produce a white cellulosic feedstock prior to reprocessing through Lyocell fibre regeneration. A sequential acid, alkali and peroxide treatment completely removed the azo-based C. I. Reactive Black 5 and C. I. Reactive Red 228 colorants from the dyed cotton, however, the anthraquinone-based C. I. Reactive Blue 19 was highly resistant to removal and will require alternative chemical processing to remove the colorant

    Development of a novel three‐dimensional printing technology for the application of “raised” surface features

    A simple procedure to ink-jet print raised images using two water-soluble inorganic inks is reported and it has the potential to be utilised in domestic and commercial environments. The advantages of such a procedure lies in the ability to print moulded objects, Braille type and to engineer special gonio-specific effects that may have value in the security printing area. The study focuses on printing gypsum through the ready precipitation of calcium sulphate dihydrate by co-jetting calcium chloride and ammonium sulphate solutions. The results in this preliminary study are encouraging and offer a potential method for durable surface structuring of material surfaces with haptic and visual effects for both the blind and the sighted

    Supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO₂) dyeing of cellulose acetate: An opportunity for a “greener” circular textile economy

    This article compares the dyeing of cellulose diacetate (cellulose-based) and polyester fabrics using supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO₂) and aqueous media. The benefits of dyeing in SC-CO₂ were clearly demonstrated in laboratory-based and pilot-scale studies in terms of increased colour strength, uniformity, fastness and the absence of auxiliaries such as dispersing agents or surfactants. In addition, the “super-levelling” nature of the SC-CO₂ medium was demonstrated in the reprocessing of polyester “waste textile” and the re-use of the “locked-in waste” colourant. The SC-CO₂ processing medium can be utilised to accurately colour “multiple life” polyester and cellulose acetate uniformly and to creatively tie-dye polyester and cellulose acetate fabrics. Through SC-CO₂ fluid technology, we can envisage a viable waterless circular manufacturing and recycling/remanufacturing framework for the predominantly polyester global fibre market coupled to the sustainably sourced, biodegradable cellulose diacetate as a replacement for cotton. The key technical and commercial advantages being the use of a single solvent dye class for both polyester and the cellulose diacetate, saving on energy costs, integrated simpler processing, reduced water usage and associated efficient recycling. Further, repositioning the cellulosic fibre industry towards using sustainable forests is attractive in terms of improved land, water and environmental management

    Investigation into the dyeing of wool with Lanasol and Remazol reactive dyes in seawater

    Freshwater is an increasingly scarce resource that is extensively used in textile wet‐processing. In seeking to identify alternative low freshwater‐usage coloration technology, this study examined the potential use of seawater (SEAW) as the dyeing medium for wool coloration using a range of reactive dyes. Initially, the dyeing behaviour of the wool fabric in simulated seawater (SSW) was compared with conventional dyeing from distilled water (DW) using α‐bromoacrylamide‐based Lanasol dyes and sulphatoethyl sulphone‐based Remazol dyes. These preliminary studies demonstrated that comparable coloration could be achieved in the SSW medium based on an assessment of the dye exhaustion, dye fixation, colour yield and levelness. Subsequent dyeing studies of wool using Mauritian seawater with both the Lanasol and Remazol reactive dyes confirmed that, based on the dye exhaustion, dye fixation, colour yield and levelness, comparable coloration could be achieved, highlighting the possibility of substituting freshwater with seawater as the dyeing medium

    Human alpha 3 beta 4 Neuronal Nicotinic Receptors Show Different Stoichiometry if They Are Expressed in Xenopus Oocytes or Mammalian HEK293 Cells

    Background: The neuronal nicotinic receptors that mediate excitatory transmission in autonomic ganglia are thought to be formed mainly by the alpha 3 and beta 4 subunits. Expressing this composition in oocytes fails to reproduce the properties of ganglionic receptors, which may also incorporate the alpha 5 and/or beta 2 subunits. We compared the properties of human alpha 3 beta 4 neuronal nicotinic receptors expressed in Human embryonic kidney cells (HEK293) and in Xenopus oocytes, to examine the effect of the expression system and alpha:beta subunit ratio.Methodology/Principal Findings: Two distinct channel forms were observed: these are likely to correspond to different stoichiometries of the receptor, with two or three copies of the alpha subunit, as reported for alpha 4 beta 2 channels. This interpretation is supported by the pattern of change in acetylcholine (ACh) sensitivity observed when a hydrophilic Leu to Thr mutation was inserted in position 9' of the second transmembrane domain, as the effect of mutating the more abundant subunit is greater. Unlike alpha 4 beta 2 channels, for alpha 3 beta 4 receptors the putative two-alpha form is the predominant one in oocytes (at 1:1 alpha:beta cRNA ratio). This two-alpha form has a slightly higher ACh sensitivity (about 3-fold in oocytes), and displays potentiation by zinc. The putative three-alpha form is the predominant one in HEK cells transfected with a 1:1 alpha:beta DNA ratio or in oocytes at 9:1 alpha:beta RNA ratio, and is more sensitive to dimethylphenylpiperazinium (DMPP) than to ACh. In outside-out single-channel recordings, the putative two-alpha form opened to distinctive long bursts (100 ms or more) with low conductance (26 pS), whereas the three-alpha form gave rise to short bursts (14 ms) of high conductance (39 pS).Conclusions/Significance: Like other neuronal nicotinic receptors, the alpha 3 beta 4 receptor can exist in two different stoichiometries, depending on whether it is expressed in oocytes or in mammalian cell lines and on the ratio of subunits transfected

    Sperm banking is recommended for all men diagnosed with cancer where treatment is associated with risk of long-term gonadatoxicity, to offer the opportunity of fatherhood and improved quality of life. However, uptake of sperm banking is lower than expected and little is known about why men refuse. Our aims were to determine: (i) demographic and medical variables associated with decisions about banking and (ii) differences in quality of life between bankers and non-bankers at diagnosis (Time 1 (T1)) and 1 year later (Time 2 (T2))

    "Do I really want to do this?" Longitudinal cohort study participants' perspectives on postal survey design: a qualitative study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Randomised controlled trials have investigated aspects of postal survey design yet cannot elaborate on reasons behind participants' decision making and survey behaviour. This paper reports participants' perspectives of the design of, and participation in, a longitudinal postal cohort survey. It describes strengths and weaknesses in study design from the perspectives of study participants and aims to contribute to the: 1) design of future cohort surveys and questionnaires generally and, 2) design of cohort surveys for people with musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) specifically.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In-depth interviews explored the design of postal surveys previously completed by participants. Interviews used open ended questioning with a topic guide for prompts if areas of interest were not covered spontaneously. Thematic data analysis was undertaken based on the framework method. A second researcher verified all coding.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Data from fourteen interviews were analysed within three main themes; participation, survey design and survey content. One of the main findings was the importance of clear communication aimed at the correct audience both when inviting potential participants to take part and within the survey itself. Providing enough information about the study, having a topic of interest and an explanation of likely benefits of the study were important when inviting people to participate. The neutrality of the survey and origination from a reputable source were both important; as was an explanation about why information was being collected within the survey itself. Study findings included participants' impressions when invited to take part, why they participated, the acceptability of follow-up of non-responders and why participants completed the follow-up postal survey. Also discussed were participants' first impression of the survey, its length, presentation and participants' views about specific questions within the survey.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Ideas generated in this study provide an insight into participants' decision making and survey behaviour and may enhance the acceptability of future surveys to potential participants. As well as clear communication, participants valued incentives and survey questions that were relevant to them. However, opinions varied as to the preferred format for responses with some advising more opportunity for open-ended feedback. We also found that some standard format questions can raise quandaries for individual participants.</p

    Reaching back: the relative strength of the retroactive emotional attentional blink

    Visual stimuli with emotional content appearing in close temporal proximity either before or after a target a stimulus can hinder conscious perceptual processing of the target via an emotional attentional blink (EAB). This occurs for targets that appear after the emotional stimulus (forward EAB) and for those appearing before the emotional stimulus (retroactive EAB). Additionally, the traditional attentional blink (AB) occurs because detection of any target hinders detection of a subsequent target. The present study investigated the relations between these different attentional processes. Rapid sequences of landscape images were presented to thirty-one male participants with occasional landscape targets (rotated images). For the forward EAB, emotional or neutral distractor images of people were presented before the target; for the retroactive EAB, such images were also targets and presented after the landscape target. In the latter case, this design allowed investigation of the AB as well. Erotic and gory images caused more EABs than neutral images, but there were no differential effects on the AB. This pattern is striking because while using different target categories (rotated landscapes, people) appears to have eliminated the AB, the retroactive EAB still occurred, offering additional evidence for the power of emotional stimuli over conscious attention
