    The Generation of Fullerenes

    We describe an efficient new algorithm for the generation of fullerenes. Our implementation of this algorithm is more than 3.5 times faster than the previously fastest generator for fullerenes -- fullgen -- and the first program since fullgen to be useful for more than 100 vertices. We also note a programming error in fullgen that caused problems for 136 or more vertices. We tabulate the numbers of fullerenes and IPR fullerenes up to 400 vertices. We also check up to 316 vertices a conjecture of Barnette that cubic planar graphs with maximum face size 6 are hamiltonian and verify that the smallest counterexample to the spiral conjecture has 380 vertices.Comment: 21 pages; added a not

    Arrest stress of uniformly sheared wet granular matter

    We conduct extensive independent numerical experiments considering frictionless disks without internal degrees of freedom (rotation etc.) in two dimensions. We report here that for a large range of the packing fractions below random-close packing, all components of the stress tensor of wet granular materials remain finite in the limit of zero shear rate. This is direct evidence for a fluid-to-solid arrest transition. The offset value of the shear stress characterizes plastic deformation of the arrested state {which corresponds to {\em dynamic yield stress} of the system}. {Based on an analytical line of argument, we propose that the mean number of capillary bridges per particle, ν\nu, follows a non-trivial dependence on the packing fraction, ϕ\phi, and the capillary energy, \vareps. Most noticeably, we show that ν\nu is a generic and universal quantity which does not depend on the driving protocol.} Using this universal quantity, we calculate the arrest stress, σa\sigma_a, analytically based on a balance of the energy injection rate due to the external force driving the flow and the dissipation rate accounting for the rupture of capillary bridges. The resulting prediction of σa\sigma_a is a non-linear function of the packing fraction ϕ\phi, and the capillary energy \vareps. This formula provides an excellent, parameter-free prediction of the numerical data. Corrections to the theory for small and large packing fractions are connected to the emergence of shear bands and of contributions to the stress from repulsive particle interactions, respectively.Comment: 7 pages, g figure

    We construct two distinct classes of exact type III solutions of the D=4 Einstein-Yang-Mills system. The solutions are embeddings of the non-abelian plane waves in spacetimes in Kundt's class. Reduction of the solutions to type N leads to generalized pppp and Kundt waves.     The size distribution of galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

    abridged: We use a complete sample of about 140,000 galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to study the size distribution of galaxies and its dependence on their luminosity, stellar mass, and morphological type. The large SDSS database provides statistics of unprecedented accuracy. For each type of galaxy, the size distribution at given luminosity (or stellar mass) is well described by a log-normal function, characterized by its median Rˉ\bar{R} and dispersion σlnR\sigma_{\ln R}. For late-type galaxies, there is a characteristic luminosity at Mr,020.5M_{r,0}\sim -20.5 (assuming h=0.7h=0.7) corresponding to a stellar mass M_0\sim 10^{10.6}\Msun. Galaxies more massive than M0M_0 have RˉM0.4\bar{R}\propto M^{0.4} and σlnR0.3\sigma_{\ln R}\sim 0.3, while less massive galaxies have RˉM0.15\bar{R}\propto M^{0.15} and σlnR0.5\sigma_{\ln R}\sim 0.5. For early-type galaxies, the Rˉ\bar{R} - MM relation is significantly steeper, RˉM0.55\bar{R}\propto M^{0.55}, but the σlnR\sigma_{\ln R} - MM relation is similar to that of late-type galaxies.
