La diaspora commerciale ligure nel sistema atlantico iberico. Da Cadice a Buenos Aires (1750-1830)

Lo scopo principale della tesi è quello di indagare sui presupposti dell'emigrazione italiana nel Rio de la Plata. Data la prevalenza ligure di questi primi flussi migratori, si è operata un'analisi comparativa con l'insediamento commerciale genovese nel porto di Cadice nel XVIII secolo, emporio monopolistico dei traffici dell'impero spagnolo e trampolino di lancio per la trasposizione dell'emigrazione ligure nelle Americhe in seguito alla crisi dell'impero coloniale e dell'antico regime genovese. Questo fenomeno si inserisce nella secolare tradizione della diaspora commerciale ligure nel contesto iberico e viene presentato come un capitolo della storia atlantica

Comunidades transnacionales. Colonias de mercaderes extranjeros en el mundo atlántico (1500-1830)

Esta miscelánea ofrece un panorama sobre las líneas de investigación desarrolladas sobre las comunidades mercantiles de diversas nacionalidades que se asentaron por ciudades conectadas a la dinámica de la expansión marítima entre los siglos XVI y XIX. Los contenidos de un total de 17 textos enfocan temas como el papel que desempeñaron las colonias de mercaderes en las actividades comerciales y en los circuitos de conexión e intercambio por donde se articularon redes, el desarrollo de sofisticados mecanismos de financiación, o los transfondos sociales, religiosos y culturales de la transmisión de valores a través de la migración en cadena y la formación de unas identidades que en gran medida llegaron a ser transnacionales

La importancia de hacerse español: la élite mercantil genovesa de Cádiz en el siglo XVIII

El objetivo del presente trabajo es contribuir a explicar la pervivencia de los intereses comerciales genoveses en el Cádiz del siglo XVIII a través del estudio de su élite mercantil. Desafortunadamente, no han quedado archivos familiares que permitan reconstruir de manera sistemática las estrategias empresariales de estos sujetos; sin embargo, podemos contar con numerosas fuentes notariales e institucionales de gran utilidad para conocer de manera más profunda una comunidad mercantil importante pero hasta ahora poco considerada en los estudios del mundo atlántico dieciochesco.Peer reviewe

The Genoese Response to the Collapse of the Spanish Empire in America

This artiele focuses on the effects of the Spanish Empire's crisis on the Genoese Atlantic trade, which in the early 19th century shifted its main commercial axis from the port of Cadiz to Buenos Aires and Montevideo. Despite the Republic of Genoa's intemational marginalization, during the 18th century Ligurians continued to participate in the Spanish colonial trade due to the persistent productive and naval shortfalls of the monarchy: the monopolistic port of Cadiz became their main operative center. The Napoleonic wars, the consequent crisis of the Spanish Empire and the collapse of the oligarchical republic, which culminated in the annexation of Genoa to the Sardinian kingdom, decisively damaged the Genoese system of participation in the Carrera de Indias . But the conjuncture also created the conditions for their autonomous Atlantic adventure. The neutrality of the Sardinian flag and the traditional ties woven in the Iberían trade allowed Ligurian ves seis to play an essential role of commercial intermediation between Spain and the lost colony of Rio de la Plata. Buenos Aires became the new destination of many Ligurían migrants, who contributed to local economic growth and created tight bonds with the new host society.Peer reviewe

Mercaderes genoveses en el Cádiz del siglo XVIII. Crisis y reajuste de una simbiosis secular

El fin del “siglo de los genoveses” no alejó de los hombres de negocios de la república de Génova del Atlántico ibérico. A través del estudio del puerto de Cádiz, este trabajo pretende evidenciar que los mercaderes genoveses siguieron gravitando alrededor de la órbita española, se insertaron en los sectores clave de la economía gaditana y volvieron a ocupar un espacio importante en los circuitos legales de la Carrera de Indias. Con este fin, se ilustrará la evolución de las relaciones entre Génova y la monarquía hispánica y se evidenciarán las condiciones que permitieron a los genoveses mantener una fuerte presencia en Cádiz a lo largo de todo el siglo XVIII.Peer reviewe

Coping with Iberian monopolies: Genoese trade networks and formal institutions in Spain and Portugal during the second half of the eighteenth century

This article explores Genoese trade interests in Cadiz and Lisbon, the two capitals of Iberian colonial trade at the end of the early-modern period. The author aims to explain the persisting intermediary role of a merchant community that has been largely overlooked by historians. The structure of the trade networks established in the two cities will be reconstructed by using the primary sources conserved in the archive of the Durazzos, a powerful aristocratic family of the Republic which has left a unique collection of private correspondence. This sizeable and largely unexplored documentation illuminates the different strategies used to access the Spanish and Portuguese monopolistic systems, the main actors who traded in both contexts, their relations with the local elite, and the nature of the business networks linking Genoese investors in the mother city with the expatriated agents. The author concludes with a comparative analysis of the institutional resources that Genoese used to maintain their interests, with particular attention paid to the religious institutions established by the 'nation' in the two port cities
