The evolution of electron overdensities in magnetic fields
When a neutral gas impinges on a stationary magnetized plasma an enhancement in the ionization rate occurs when the neutrals exceed a threshold velocity. This is commonly known as the critical ionization velocity effect. This process has two distinct timescales: an ionâneutral collision time and electron acceleration time. We investigate the energization of an ensemble of electrons by their self-electric field in an applied magnetic field. The evolution of the electrons is simulated under different magnetic field and density conditions. It is found that electrons can be accelerated to speeds capable of electron impact ionization for certain conditions. In the magnetically dominated case the energy distribution of the excited electrons shows that typically 1% of the electron population can exceed the initial electrostatic potential associated with the unbalanced ensemble of electrons
Average Emissivity Curve of BATSE Gamma-Ray Bursts with Different Intensities
Six intensity groups with ~150 BATSE gamma-ray bursts each are compared using
average emissivity curves. Time-stretch factors for each of the dimmer groups
are estimated with respect to the brightest group, which serves as the
reference, taking into account the systematics of counts-produced noise effects
and choice statistics. A stretching/intensity anti-correlation is found with
good statistical significance during the average back slopes of bursts. A
stretch factor ~2 is found between the 150 dimmest bursts, with peak flux
4.1 ph
cm^{-2} s^{-1}. On the other hand, while a trend of increasing stretching
factor may exist for rise fronts for burst with decreasing peak flux from >4.1
ph cm^{-2} s^{-1} down to 0.7 ph cm^{-2} s^{-1}, the magnitude of the
stretching factor is less than ~ 1.4 and is therefore inconsistent with

Do Gamma-Ray Burst Sources Repeat?
The demonstration of repeated gamma-ray bursts from an individual source
would severely constrain burst source models. Recent reports (Quashnock and
Lamb 1993; Wang and Lingenfelter 1993) of evidence for repetition in the first
BATSE burst catalog have generated renewed interest in this issue. Here, we
analyze the angular distribution of 585 bursts of the second BATSE catalog
(Meegan et al. 1994). We search for evidence of burst recurrence using the
nearest and farthest neighbor statistic and the two-point angular correlation
function. We find the data to be consistent with the hypothesis that burst
sources do not repeat; however, a repeater fraction of up to about 20% of the

Size and Shape Information Serve as Labels in the Alarm Calls of Gunnisonâs Prairie Dogs Cynomys gunnisoni
Some animals have the capacity to produce different alarm calls for terrestrial and aerial predators. However, it is not clear what cognitive processes are involved in generating these calls. One possibility is the position of the predator: Anything on the ground receives a terrestrial predator call, and anything in the air receives an aerial predator call. Another possibility is that animals are able to recognize the physical features of predators and incorporate those into their calls. As a way of elucidating which of these mechanisms plays a primary role in generating the structure of different calls, we performed two field experiments with Gunnisonâs prairie dogs. First, we presented the prairie dogs with a circle, a triangle, and a square, each moving across the colony at the same height and speed. Second, we presented the prairie dogs with two squares of differing sizes. DFA statistics showed that 82.6 percent of calls for the circle and 79.2 percent of the calls for the triangle were correctly classified, and 73.3 percent of the calls for the square were classified as either square or circle. Also, 100 percent of the calls for the larger square and 90 percent of the calls for the smaller square were correctly classified. Because both squares and circles are features of terrestrial predators and triangles are features of aerial predators, our results suggest that prairie dogs might have a cognitive mechanism that labels the abstract shape and size of different predators, rather than the position of the predator
Perceived barriers to career advancement and organizational commitment in sales
This paper identifies three potential barriers to career advancement in sales: being excluded from informal networks, a lack of cultural fit, and a lack of mentoring. Using a sample of 241 account executives and managers from an organization in the television broadcasting industry, study results suggest that perceived barriers to career advancement (PBCA) have a significant negative impact on the organizational commitment (OC) of these sales employees. Effects are estimated with path analysis, and the effects of common method bias and job satisfaction are considered. Demographic variables (age, gender, company tenure, job level) are also hypothesized to moderate the relationship between PBCA and OC. The negative influence of PBCA on OC is found to become stronger as company tenure increases. Data also suggest that the negative relationship between PBCA and OC is more powerful among account executives than sales managers/directors. Managerial and research implications are discussed
Emergency Department Crowding: Factors Influencing Flow
Background: The objective of this study was to evaluate those factors, both intrinsic and extrinsic to the emergency department (ED) that influence two specific components of throughput: âdoor-to-doctorâ time and dwell time.Methods: We used a prospective observational study design to determine the variables that played a significant role in determining ED flow. All adult patients seen or waiting to be seen in the ED were observed at 8pm (Monday-Friday) during a three-month period. Variables measured included daily ED volume, patient acuity, staffing, ED occupancy, daily admissions, ED boarder volume, hospital volume, and intensive care unit volume. Both log-rank tests and time-to-wait (survival) proportional-hazard regression models were fitted to determine which variables were most significant in predicting âdoor-to-doctorâ and dwell times, with full account of the censoring for some patients.Results: We captured 1,543 patients during our study period, representing 27% of total daily volume. The ED operated at an average of 85% capacity (61-102%) with an average of 27% boarding. Median âdoor-to-doctorâ time was 1.8 hours, with the biggest influence being triage category, day of the week, and ED occupancy. Median dwell time was 5.5 hours with similar variable influences.Conclusion: The largest contributors to decreased patient flow through the ED at our institution were triage category, ED occupancy, and day of the week. Although the statistically significant factors influencing patient throughput at our institution involve problems with inflow, an increase in ED occupancy could be due to substantial outflow obstruction and may indicate the necessity for increased capacity both within the ED and hospital.
