    A review of potential methods for monitoring rangeland degradation in Libya

    Natural and human factors exert a profound impact on the degradation of rangelands, human effects being the most significant factor in increasing the severity of deterioration. This occurs through agricultural expansion at the expense of rangelands, and with the number of domestic and wildlife animals exceeding the natural carrying capacity. This raises concerns about the ongoing sustainability of these land resources, as well as the sustainability of traditional pastoral land practices. Rangelands require effective management, which is dependent upon accurate and timely monitoring data to support the assessment of rangeland deterioration. Natural rangelands provide one of the significant pillars of support for the Libyan national economy. Despite the important role of rangeland in Libya from both economic and environmental perspectives, the vegetation cover of Libyan rangeland has changed adversely qualitatively and quantitatively over the past four decades. Ground-based observation methods are widely used to assess rangeland degradation in Libya. However, multi-temporal observations are often not integrated nor repeatable, making it difficult for rangeland managers to detect degradation consistently. Field study costs are also significantly high in comparison with their accuracy and reliability, both in terms of the time and resources required. Remote-sensing approaches offer the advantage of spanning large geographical areas with multiple spatial, spectral and temporal resolutions. These data can play a significant role in rangeland monitoring, permitting observation, monitoring and prediction of vegetation changes, productivity assessment, fire extent, vegetation and soil moisture measurement and quantifying the proliferation of invasive plant species. This paper reviews the factors causing rangeland degradation in Libya, identifying appropriate remote-sensing methods that can be used to implement appropriate monitoring procedures

    Sinais clínicos associados a um caso de envenenamento iatrogênico de um equino com três dias de idade por um produto comercial baseado em terebintina

    O objetivo deste estudo é relatar um caso de intoxicação iatrogênica por um produto comercial a base de terebentina em um potro de três días de idade e o sucesso do tratamento dessa condição. Um potro de três dias de idade foi apresentou um colapso cardiorrespiratório agudo, choque anafilático, desconforto respiratório grave, dispnéia e edema pulmonar. A história incluiu a administração prévia de um produto veterinário comercial (UNITIPAN). Ao exame clínico: temperatura: (39,9 °C), pulso: 135 bpm, respiração 51 bpm, membranas mucosas, congestionamento úmido, tempo de enchimento capilar: três segundos ou menos. O potro foi tratado com hidratação de emergência, duphalyte, anti-inflamatório esteroidal, sulfato de atropina e antibiótico. Após seis horas de tratamento, o potro foi estabilizado e os sinais vitais foram normalizados depois de oito horas do inicio do tratamento. O presente trabalho relata um caso de intoxicação iatrogênica por um produto à base de terebintina comercial em um potro de três dias de idade com rápido desenvolvimento de sinais de toxicidade aguda e uma resposta muito favorável ao tratamento sintomático.The aim of this study is to report a case of iatrogenic poisoning by a turpentine-based commercial product in a 3-day-old foal and the successful treatment of this condition. A 3-day-old male foal presented with acute cardio-respiratory collapse, anaphylactic shock, severe respiratory distress, dyspnea and pulmonary edema. The animal’s history included previous administration of a commercial veterinary product (UNITIPAN). Clinical examination revealed: temperature: (39.9 °C), pulse: 135 bpm, respiration: 51 bpm, mucous membranes: moist and congested, capillary refill time: 3 sec or less. The foal was treated with emergency hydration, duphalyte, steroidal anti-inflammatory, atropine sulphate and antibiotic. After 6 h of treatment, the foal was stabilized and vital signs were normalized 8 h after treatment start.El objetivo de este estudio es informar un caso de envenenamiento iatrogénico por un producto comercial basado en la trementina en un potro de 3 días y el tratamiento exitoso de esta afección. Se presentó un potro de 3 días de edad que mostraba colapso cardiorrespiratorio agudo, shock anafiláctico, dificultad respiratoria grave, disnea y edema pulmonar. La historia incluía la administración previa de un producto veterinario comercial (UNITIPAN). En el examen clínico: temperatura: (39.9 ° C), pulso: 135 lpm, respiración 51 lpm, membranas mucosas, congestión húmeda, tiempo de llenado capilar: tres segundos o menos. El potro fue tratado con hidratación de emergencia, duphalito, antiinflamatorio esteroideo, sulfato de atropina y antibiótico. Después de 6 horas de tratamiento, el potro se estabilizó y los signos vitales se normalizaron 8 después.     Child mental health in Jordanian orphanages: effect of placement change on behavior and caregiving

    Background: To assess the mental health and behavioral problems of children in institutional placements in Jordan to inform understanding of current needs, and to explore the effects of placement change on functioning and staff perceptions of goodness-of-fit. Methods: An assessment was completed of 134 children between 1.5? 12 years-of-age residing in Jordanian orphanages. The Child Behavior Checklist was used to assess prevalence rates of problems across externalizing and internalizing behavior and DSM-IV oriented subscales. Also included was caregiver perceived goodness-of-fit with each child, caregiving behavior, and two placement change-clock variables; an adjustment clock measuring time since last move, and an anticipation clock measuring time to next move. Results: 28% were in the clinical range for the internalizing domain on the CBCL, and 22% for the externalizing domain. The children also exhibited high levels of clinical range social problems, affective disorder, pervasive developmental disorder, and conduct problems. Internalizing problems were found to decrease with time in placement as children adjust to a prior move, whereas externalizing problems increased as the time to their next age-triggered move drew closer, highlighting the anticipatory effects of change. Both behavioral problems and the change clocks were predictive of staff perceptions of goodness-of-fit with the children under their care. Conclusions: These findings add to the evidence demonstrating the negative effects of orphanage rearing, and highlight the importance of the association between behavioral problems and child-caregiver relationship pathways including the timing of placement disruptions and staff perceptions of goodness-of-fit

    Recruiting Diverse Smokers: Enrollment Yields and Cost

    To help tobacco control research better include vulnerable populations, we sought to identify effective ways to recruit diverse smokers. In 2014–2015, we recruited 2149 adult cigarette smokers in California and North Carolina, United States, to participate in a randomized trial of pictorial cigarette pack warnings. The most effective means of recruiting smokers were the classified advertising website Craigslist (28% of participants), word of mouth (23%), Facebook (16%), and flyers or postcards (14%). Low-income and African American smokers were more likely to respond to interpersonal contact (including staff in-person recruitment and word of mouth) than were high-income and non-African American smokers (all p < 0.05). Hispanic and gay, lesbian, and bisexual smokers were more likely to be recruited by Craigslist than non-Hispanic and straight smokers (both p < 0.05). Of the recruitment methods requiring cost, the cheapest was Craigslist (37persmoker).ThemostexpensivemethodswerenewspaperadsinCalifornia(3–7 per smoker). The most expensive methods were newspaper ads in California (375 per smoker) and staff in-person recruiting in North Carolina ($180 per smoker). Successfully recruiting diverse smokers requires using multiple methods including interpersonal, online, and other media. Craigslist and word of mouth are especially useful and low-cost ways to recruit diverse smokers

    UU/UA Dinucleotide Frequency Reduction in Coding Regions Results in Increased mRNA Stability and Protein Expression

    UU and UA dinucleotides are rare in mammalian genes and may offer natural selection against endoribonuclease-mediated mRNA decay. This study hypothesized that reducing UU and UA (UW) dinucleotides in the mRNA-coding sequence, including the codons and the dicodon boundaries, may promote resistance to mRNA decay, thereby increasing protein production. Indeed, protein expression from UW-reduced coding regions of enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP), luciferase, interferon-α, and hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) was higher when compared to the wild-type protein expression. The steady-state level of UW-reduced EGFP mRNA was higher and the mRNA half-life was also longer. Ectopic expression of the endoribonuclease, RNase L, did not reduce the wild type or UW-reduced mRNA. A mutant form of the mRNA decay-promoting protein, tristetraprolin (TTP/ZFP36), which has a point mutation in the zinc-finger domain (C124R), was used. The wild-type EGFP mRNA but not the UW-reduced mRNA responded to the dominant negative action of the C124R ZFP36/TTP mutant. The results indicate the efficacy of the described rational approach to formulate a general scheme for boosting recombinant protein production in mammalian cells
