Numerical calculation of the parameters of the efflux from a helium dewar used for cooling of heat shields in a satellite

The parameters of the efflux from a helium dewar in space were numerically calculated. The flow was modeled as a one dimensional compressible ideal gas with variable properties. The primary boundary conditions are flow with friction and flow with heat transfer and friction. Two PASCAL programs were developed to calculate the efflux parameters: EFFLUZD and EFFLUXM. EFFLUXD calculates the minimum mass flow for the given shield temperatures and shield heat inputs. It then calculates the pipe lengths, diameter, and fluid parameters which satisfy all boundary conditions. Since the diameter returned by EFFLUXD is only rarely of nominal size, EFFLUXM calculates the mass flow and shield heat exchange for given pipe lengths, diameter, and shield temperatures

Improving Professionalism in New Graduate Nursing Behavior

Professional behavior in nursing is a difficult term to define. There are generational, cultural, and regional aspects that affect the definition of this concept. Nursing, as in other professions, has a set of behaviors it has deemed necessary to guide practice. Professionalism is paramount in that it guides the nurse’s behavior in patient care, in collaboration with healthcare team members, and in serving the community. There is a direct correlation between professional behavior in nursing practice and positive patient outcomes. Unprofessionalism has been noted as an issue in nursing, including the new graduate nurse population. This project sought to develop a professional development course for senior nursing students that would provide professional behavior education before they began their nursing career, in an attempt to increase professionalism in the workplace. A senior nursing class (n=64) was divided into a participant group that completed a professional development course and a non-participant group that did not attend the course. All students were surveyed prior to and after the professional development intervention to assess for self-reported growth in professionalism. This study asks the question: Is professional behavior improved by direct and specific professional development education for senior nursing students? The project results showed that there was a significant, positive change in professionalism scores for all students when the first and second survey scores were compared. There were increased positive changes found in the participation group as compared to the non-participant group, but the increase was not significant

Correlates of the Perception of Recovery-Oriented Treatment in an Inpatient Setting

In 2003, the New Freedom Commission on Mental Health articulated a call for mental-health-care service systems to transform their service systems to a recovery-oriented model. Current research regarding the integration of recovery-based services has predominantly been conducted in outpatient and community provider settings (Crane-Ross, Lutz & Roth, 2006; Deegan et al., 2008; Matthias et al., 2012; Salyers & Tsemeris, 2007; Solomon & Stanhope, 2004). The following study examines whether adult inpatients with serious mental illnesses perceive their treatment to meet recovery-related standards at a private psychiatric hospital that uses a recovery-oriented treatment system. The study will further identify if there is a relationship between patient perception of adherence to recovery-informed practices and participation in therapeutic services, the administration of medication (PRN), level of family involvement, interaction with peer specialists, the level of perceived self-stigma, and the perception of shared decision-making. The sample consisted of patients discharging from Friend\u27s Hospital. Data were collected from 70 adult participants who were discharging from Friends Hospital. The current study used a correlational analysis to examine the relationship between scores on the dependent variables scores for both the Clinical Decision-Making Style scale and the Self-Stigma of Mental Illness Scale- Short Form, number of notes regarding family contact, number of PRN medications administered, and amount of time spent with peer specialists and the dependent variable scores on the Recovery Self-Assessment scale. A MANOVA test was used to determine if there was a difference in means between patients who were admitted voluntarily versus involuntarily and scores on the Recovery Self-Assessment scale, the Clinical Decision-Making Style scale, and the Self-Stigma of Mental Illness Scale-Short Form. A multiple regression was conducted to determine the relationship between scores on the Recovery Self-Assessment scale and the Self-Stigma of Mental Illness Scale-Short Form and the Clinical Decision-Making Style scale. Results concluded that there were significant relationships between scores on the Recovery Self-Assessment scale, client rating of their perception of inclusion in decision-making, and level of self-stigma. Limitations of the study were that some variables were difficult to measure. Future research may want to further revise how inpatient treatment providers can employ strategies to encourage patient participation in decision-making and to lower self-stigma

The High Angular Resolution Multiplicity of Massive Stars

We present the results of a speckle interferometric survey of Galactic massive stars that complements and expands upon a similar survey made over a decade ago. The speckle observations were made with the KPNO and CTIO 4 m telescopes and USNO speckle camera, and they are sensitive to the detection of binaries in the angular separation regime between 0.03" and 5" with relatively bright companions (Delta V < 3). We report on the discovery of companions to 14 OB stars. In total we resolved companions of 41 of 385 O-stars (11%), 4 of 37 Wolf-Rayet stars (11%), and 89 of 139 B-stars (64%; an enriched visual binary sample that we selected for future orbital determinations). We made a statistical analysis of the binary frequency among the subsample that are listed in the Galactic O Star Catalog by compiling published data on other visual companions detected through adaptive optics studies and/or noted in the Washington Double Star Catalog and by collecting published information on radial velocities and spectroscopic binaries. We find that the binary frequency is much higher among O-stars in clusters and associations compared to the numbers for field and runaway O-stars, consistent with predictions for the ejection processes for runaway stars. We present a first orbit for the O-star Delta Orionis, a linear solution of the close, apparently optical, companion of the O-star Iota Orionis, and an improved orbit of the Be star Delta Scorpii. Finally, we list astrometric data for another 249 resolved and 221 unresolved targets that are lower mass stars that we observed for various other science programs.Comment: 76 pages, 6 figures, 11 table

Orbit Determination of Close Binary Systems using Lucky Imaging

We present relative positions of visual binaries observed during 2009 with the FastCam "lucky-imaging" camera at the 1.5-m Carlos Sanchez Telescope (TCS) at the Observatorio del Teide. We obtained 424 CCD observations (averaged in 198 mean relative positions) of 157 binaries with angular separations in the range 0.14-15.40", with a median separation of 0.51". For a given system, each CCD image represents the sum of the best 10-25% images from 1000-5000 short-exposure frames. Derived internal errors were 7 mas in r and 1.2^{\circ} (9 mas) in q. When comparing to systems with very well-known orbits, we find that the rms deviation in r residuals is 23 mas, while the rms deviation in q residuals is 0.73 deg/r. We confirmed 18 Hipparcos binaries and we report new companions to BVD 36 A and J 621 B. For binaries with preliminary orbital parameters, the relative radial velocity was estimated as well. We also present four new revised orbits computed for LDS 873, BU 627 A-BC, BU 628 and HO 197 AB. This work is the first results on visual binaries using the FastCam lucky-imaging camera.Comment: 23 pages, 10 figures, 14 tables, accepted August 18th, 2011, to be published in MNRA
