Hydrogenolysis of lignin in ZnCl₂ and KCl as an inorganic molten salt medium

    Get PDF
Lignin can be converted into monomeric products with the aid of molten salt media. Molten zinc chloride (ZnCl₂)/potassium chloride (KCl) mixtures are suitable for this purpose. The application of an eutectic mixture with low melting points leads to similar main products as are obtained by pyrolysis. The hydrogenolysis of an organosolv lignin in molten salts of ZnCl₂/KCl was investigated as a function of reaction temperature, residence time, and lignin concentration, and the composition of liquid products and monophenols was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The yields can be optimized by the proper selection of the reaction temperature. A longer residence time and higher lignin concentrations lead to increased formation of solid residues and gaseous products. The liquid products mainly consist of substituted phenols derived from lignins. Polymeric products are the result of condensation reactions (i.e., the formation of new C-C linkages in the course of secondary reactions)

Linac-Based Ultrahypofractionated Partial Breast Irradiation (APBI) in Low-Risk Breast Cancer: First Results of a Monoinstitutional Observational Analysis

Purpose: For adjuvant radiotherapy of low-risk breast cancer after breast-conserving surgery, there have been many trials of hypofractionation and partial breast irradiation (PBI) over the years, with proven mild long-term toxicity. The aim of this study was to introduce a short-course dose-adapted concept, proven in whole breast irradiation (WBI) for use in accelerated partial breast irradiation (APBI), while monitoring dosimetric data and toxicity. Methods: From April 2020 to March 2022, 61 patients with low-risk breast cancer or ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) were treated at a single institution with percutaneous APBI of 26 Gy in five fractions every other day after breast-conserving surgery. Dosimetric data for target volume and organs at risk were determined retrospectively. Acute toxicity was evaluated. Results: The target volume of radiotherapy comprised an average of 19% of the ipsilateral mamma. The burden on the heart and lungs was very low. The mean cardiac dose during irradiation of the left breast was only 0.6 Gy. Two out of three patients remained without any acute side effects. Conclusions: Linac-based APBI is an attractive treatment option for patients with low-risk breast cancer in whom neither WBI nor complete omission of radiotherapy appears to be an adequate alternative

Bimodal behavior of microlasers investigated with a two-channel photon-number-resolving transition-edge sensor system

We explore the photon-number distribution of bimodal quantum-dot micropillar lasers with a two-channel transition-edge sensor (TES) detection system. The two channels of the photon-number-resolving TES system simultaneously detect light emission of two orthogonal components of the micropillar's fundamental emission mode. The applied experimental scheme provides unprecedented access to the joint photon-number distribution and enables a profound insight into the dynamics and photon statistics of the gain-coupled mode components. In particular, the two-channel TES measurements reveal an optical bistability of the correlated laser modes leading to temporal hopping between emission associated with Poissonian and thermal-like emission statistics. The experimental data and theoretical modeling based on Monte Carlo simulations are in good agreement and reveal the anticorrelated behavior of the mode hopping, which results in intensity fluctuations and superthermal values of the autocorrelation function. Our investigations clearly demonstrate the great benefit of using photon-number-resolving detectors in nanophotonics to explore the rich physics of multimode micro- and nanolasers.EC/H2020/615613/EU/External Quantum Control of Photonic Semiconductor Nanostructures/EXQUISIT

The Real Daily Need for Incontinence Aids and Appliances in Patients with Neurogenic Bladder Dysfunction in a Community Setting in Germany

PURPOSE: For successful long-term rehabilitation of patients with neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction (NLUTD), it is necessary to define the objective requirement for urological aids based on a scientifically validated basis. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional multicenter study, based on a questionnaire. Data concerning bladder management and daily consumption of urological appliances for patients with NLUTD in a community setting were collected through a standardized survey. RESULTS: Seven hundred and sixty-seven records were analyzed: 543 males, 221 females (N/A = 3). Patients using intermittent catheterization (n= 608) required 5.06 (mean) single-use catheters per day. Out of them, 94 (15.5%) required additional pads (mean: 2.29 per day), 34 patients (5.6%) additionally used pants (mean: 2.55 per day) and 46 patients (7.6%) utilized condom catheters (mean: 3.81 per day) between catheterizations. Among all, 126 patients (16.4%) used pads (mean: 5.03 per day), and 51 patients (6.6%) used pants (mean: 3.03 per day). Women needed both pads (p < 0.0001) and diapers (p = 0.0084) significantly more frequently than men. Eighty-two of the male patients (15.1%) applied condom catheters (mean: 2.8 per day). The target value of the objective daily requirement of incontinence aids for adult patients with NLUTD (based on the upper twofold standard deviation from the mean value) was defined as follows: up to nine single-use catheters, seven condom catheters, nine pads and/or seven pants. A “mixed supply” of different incontinence aids is part of the daily supply for many patients. CONCLUSION: For the first time, these results allow a reasonable regulation of urological aids and appliances based on scientific data for patients with neurogenic bladder

Reiseziel Italien. Moderne Konstruktionen kulturellen Wissens in Literatur-Sprache-Film
