    Detection of X-ray emission from the host clusters of 3CR quasars

    We report the detection of extended X-ray emission around several powerful 3CR quasars with redshifts out to 0.73. The ROSAT HRI images of the quasars have been corrected for spacecraft wobble and compared with an empirical point-spread function. All the quasars examined show excess emission at radii of 15 arcsec and more; the evidence being strong for the more distant objects and weak only for the two nearest ones, which are known from other wavelengths not to lie in strongly clustered environments. The spatial profiles of the extended component is consistent with thermal emission from the intracluster medium of moderately rich host clusters to the quasars. The total luminosities of the clusters are in the range 4x10^44 - 3x10^45 erg/s, assuming a temperature of 4keV. The inner regions of the intracluster medium are, in all cases, dense enough to be part of a cooling flow.Comment: 21 pages including 4 figures and 4 tables. To be published in MNRA

    Multispectral Imager With Improved Filter Wheel and Optics

    Figure 1 schematically depicts an improved multispectral imaging system of the type that utilizes a filter wheel that contains multiple discrete narrow-band-pass filters and that is rotated at a constant high speed to acquire images in rapid succession in the corresponding spectral bands. The improvement, relative to prior systems of this type, consists of the measures taken to prevent the exposure of a focal-plane array (FPA) of photodetectors to light in more than one spectral band at any given time and to prevent exposure of the array to any light during readout. In prior systems, these measures have included, variously the use of mechanical shutters or the incorporation of wide opaque sectors (equivalent to mechanical shutters) into filter wheels. These measures introduce substantial dead times into each operating cycle intervals during which image information cannot be collected and thus incoming light is wasted. In contrast, the present improved design does not involve shutters or wide opaque sectors, and it reduces dead times substantially. The improved multispectral imaging system is preceded by an afocal telescope and includes a filter wheel positioned so that its rotation brings each filter, in its turn, into the exit pupil of the telescope. The filter wheel contains an even number of narrow-band-pass filters separated by narrow, spoke-like opaque sectors. The geometric width of each filter exceeds the cross-sectional width of the light beam coming out of the telescope. The light transmitted by the sequence of narrow-band filters is incident on a dichroic beam splitter that reflects in a broad shorter-wavelength spectral band that contains half of the narrow bands and transmits in a broad longer-wavelength spectral band that contains the other half of the narrow spectral bands. The filters are arranged on the wheel so that if the pass band of a given filter is in the reflection band of the dichroic beam splitter, then the pass band of the adjacent filter is in the longer-wavelength transmission band of the dichroic beam splitter (see Figure 2). Each of the two optical paths downstream of the dichroic beam splitter contains an additional broad-band-pass filter: The filter in the path of the light transmitted by the dichroic beam splitter transmits and attenuates in the same bands that are transmitted and reflected, respectively, by the beam splitter; the filter in the path of the light reflected by the dichroic beam splitter transmits and attenuates in the same bands that are reflected and transmitted, respectively, by the dichroic beam splitter. In each of these paths, the filtered light is focused onto an FPA. As the filter wheel rotates at a constant angular speed, its shaft angle is monitored, and the shaft-angle signal is used to synchronize the exposure times of the two FPAs. When a single narrowband-pass filter on the wheel occupies the entire cross section of the beam of light coming out of the telescope, the spectrum of light that reaches the dichroic beam splitter lies entirely within the pass band of that filter. Therefore, the beam in its entirety is either transmitted by the dichroic beam splitter and imaged on the longer-wavelength FPA or reflected by the beam splitter and imaged onto the shorter-wavelength FPA

    Non-Peer ReviewedLentil is generally grown in rotation with cereals, and may benefit the succeeding crop by using less moisture or by increasing the amount of available N. Soil moisture and N depletion was measured for lentil and wheat at five sites in 1985, three sites in 1987 and one in 1988. Lentil depleted soil moisture and mineral N to a similar extent as wheat at most sites. Exceptions occurred due to differences between lentil and wheat in their response to rainfall distribution or in their effectiveness at exploiting moisture and nitrate at deeper soil layers. Lentil residues contained more N than wheat residues, but this did not represent a net gain in N because as much N was removed with the seed as was fixed. Lentil residues had a higher and more variable N concentration than wheat Thus, net N mineralization will on average be higher following lentil than following wheat, but the magnitude of these differences will be variable

    Non-Peer ReviewedOne benefit often cited for legumes crops is that they contribute N to subsequent crops, but the magnitude of this effect has been difficult to quantify. A study was conducted to compare how much and when N from fertilizer and residue sources was taken up by wheat Wheat straw (W), lentil straw (L), and lentil green manure (G), unenriched or enriched in 15N, were both surface placed and incorporated into microplots (10 x 40 cm) in the field in the fall of 1988. In the spring of 1989 wheat was planted in all microplots, and unenriched and enriched fertilizer N was added to microplots containing enriched and unenriched plant residues, respectively. Microplots were destructively sampled at planting and at 6, 10 and 13 weeks after planting. Approximately 29 % of added fertilizer was recovered in wheat tops by 6 weeks after planting in all treatments except incorporated W, where immobilization reduced this value to 19 %. Maximum recoveries of fertilizer 15N were 34 % by the final sampling date. The proportion of residue 15N recovered in wheat tops at the final sampling dates was 19 and 11 % from incorporated and surface-placed G, respectively, and 5.4 and 5.3 % from L and W, respectively. Surface placement of residues reduced immobilization of fertilizer N but increased losses of residue N. Comparisons of N availability based on recovery of 15N may be misleading because 15N recovery does not account for changes in mineralization of native N, which is likely to be affected unequally by the addition of different N sources

    Tunable-filter imaging of quasar fields at z ~ 1. II. The star-forming galaxy environments of radio-loud quasars

    We have scanned the fields of six radio-loud quasars using the Taurus Tunable Filter to detect redshifted [OII] 3727 line-emitting galaxies at redshifts 0.8 < z < 1.3. Forty-seven new emission-line galaxy (ELG) candidates are found. This number corresponds to an average space density about 100 times that found locally and, at L([OII]) < 10^{42} erg s^{-1} cm^{-2}, is 2 - 5 times greater than the field ELG density at similar redshifts, implying that radio-loud quasars inhabit sites of above-average star formation activity. The implied star-formation rates are consistent with surveys of field galaxies at z ~ 1. However, the variation in candidate density between fields is large and indicative of a range of environments, from the field to rich clusters. The ELG candidates also cluster -- both spatially and in terms of velocity -- about the radio sources. In fields known to contain rich galaxy clusters, the ELGs lie at the edges and outside the concentrated cores of red, evolved galaxies, consistent with the morphology-density relation seen in low-redshift clusters. This work, combined with other studies, suggests that the ELG environments of powerful AGN look very much the same from moderate to high redshifts, i.e. 0.8 < z < 4.Comment: 18 pages, 18 figures, uses emulateapj.cls.     Modeling Urban Hydrology: A Comparison of New Urbanist and Traditional Neighborhood Design Surface Runoff

    Urban development affects the amount of potential surface runoff generated during storms by changing the amount of impervious cover across the landscape. However, the degree of surface runoff alteration depends on the type of urban development in place. New urbanist developments are designed with higher densities and encourage a diversity of land uses, while traditional neighborhood developments have a monotone land use pattern with medium-to- low densities. Two neighborhoods within the city of Austin, Texas- Mueller, a new urbanist development, and Circle C Ranch, a traditional neighborhood development- were used to study the effect of development type on potential surface runoff. Using satellite imagery coupled to the HEC-HMS model nested within the Watershed Modeling System (WMS), potential surface runoff was calculated for the two different neighborhoods for a 10-year 24 hour storm scenario. Results initially suggest that total runoff volume and peak surface runoff significantly increase for the new urbanist neighborhood over the traditional development as a function of the higher density urban footprint associated with the new urbanist design. However a higher number of residential units are available at Mueller over the same area as Circle C Ranch. When taking this into account the increased potential surface runoff is negated at the new urbanist site. Although new urbanist neighborhoods will usually contain more residential units than traditional developments when compared at the same scale, the higher urban density associated with these developments necessitates the construction of more efficient stormwater retention measures within these neighborhoods

    A bioinformatics approach to the development of immunoassays for specified risk material in canned meat products

    A bioinformatics approach to developing antibodies to specific proteins has been evaluated for the production of antibodies to heat-processed specified risk tissues from ruminants (brain and eye tissue). The approach involved the identification of proteins specific to ruminant tissues by interrogation of the annotation fields within the Swissprot database. These protein sequences were then interrogated for peptide sequences that were unique to the protein. Peptides were selected that met these criteria as close as possible and that were also theoretically resistant to either pepsin or trypsin. The selected peptides were synthesised and used as immunogens to raise monoclonal antibodies. Antibodies specific for the synthetic peptides were raised to half of the selected peptides. These antibodies have each been incorporated into a competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and shown to be able to detect the heat-processed parent protein after digestion with either pepsin or trypsin. One antibody, specific for alpha crystallin peptide (from bovine eye tissue), was able to detect the peptide in canned meat products spiked with 10% eye tissue. These results, although preliminary in nature, show that bioinformatics in conjunction with enzyme digestion can be used to develop ELISA for proteins in high-temperature processed foods and demonstrate that the approach is worth further stud

    Dynamic PRA: an Overview of New Algorithms to Generate, Analyze and Visualize Data

    State of the art PRA methods, i.e. Dynamic PRA (DPRA) methodologies, largely employ system simulator codes to accurately model system dynamics. Typically, these system simulator codes (e.g., RELAP5 ) are coupled with other codes (e.g., ADAPT, RAVEN that monitor and control the simulation. The latter codes, in particular, introduce both deterministic (e.g., system control logic, operating procedures) and stochastic (e.g., component failures, variable uncertainties) elements into the simulation. A typical DPRA analysis is performed by: 1. Sampling values of a set of parameters from the uncertainty space of interest 2. Simulating the system behavior for that specific set of parameter values 3. Analyzing the set of simulation runs 4.
