Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder
Disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD), a new diagnosis in The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.; DSMā5; American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2013), is characterized by chronic, severe persistent irritability in children and adolescents. DMDD was added to the DSM-5, in part, to address concerns about potential over-diagnosis and overtreatment of bipolar disorder in children (APA, 2013). DMDD characterizes behavior that is considered outside of the normal range of childhood behavior; the major features of this disorder include severe recurrent temper outbursts manifested verbally (e.g., verbal rages) and/or behaviorally (e.g., physical aggression toward people or property) that are grossly out of proportion in intensity or duration to the situation or provocation (APA, 2013)

Efficacy of the Getting Ready Intervention and the Role of Parental Depression
This study reports the results of a randomized trial of a parent engagement intervention (the Getting Ready Project) on directly observed learning-related social behaviors of children from families of low-income in the context of parent-child interactions. The study explored the moderating effect of parental depression on intervention outcomes. Participants were 204 children and their parents, and 29 Head Start teachers. Semi-structured parent-child interaction tasks were videotaped two times annually over the course of two academic years. Observational codes of child behaviors included agency, persistence, activity level, positive affect, distractibility, and verbalizations. Controlling for gender and disability concerns, relative to children in the control group, those in the treatment condition experienced a significant decline in activity level. Furthermore, compared to children of non-depressed mothers and to control children, those in the experimental condition whose parent reported elevated levels of depression showed greater gains in positive affect and in verbalizations
Biogeochemical processes at hydrothermal vents : microbes and minerals, bioenergetics, and carbon fluxes

However, our understanding of the limits of life in this extreme environment, the extent of biogeochemical transformation that occurs in the crust and overlying ocean, and the impact of vent life on regional and global ocean chemistry is in its infancy. Recently, scientific studies have expanded our view of how vent microbes gain metabolic energy at vents through their use of dissolved chemicals and minerals contained in ocean basalts, seafloor sulfide deposits, and hydrothermal plumes and, in turn, how they catalyze chemical and mineral transformations. The scale of vent environments and the difficulties inherent in the study of life above, on, and below the deep seafloor have led to the development of geochemical and bioenergetic models. These models predict habitability and biological activity based on the chemical composition of hydrothermal fluids, seawater, and the surrounding rock, balanced by the physiological energy demand of cells. This modeling, coupled with field sampling for ground truth and discovery, has led to a better understanding of how hydrothermal vents affect the ocean and global geochemical cycles, and how they influence our views of life on the early Earth and the search for life beyond our own planet.Research for

ā¢ The importance of working meaningfully and constructively with families in promoting a childās learning and adjustment is unequivocal. Home-school partnerships have been shown to relate to many positive outcomes for children, families, teachers, and schools. ā¢ Conjoint Behavioral Consultation (CBC; Sheridan, Kratochwill, & Bergan, 1996) is a structured, indirect model of service delivery whereby parents and teachers are joined to collaboratively address needs and concerns of a child with the assistance of a consultant. Goals of CBC encompass those focused on addressing child needs, and developing home-school partnerships. ā¢ CBC is procedurally operationalized via conjoint interviews (Problem Identification, Problem Analysis, and Treatment Evaluation) aimed at prioritizing shared concerns across home and school settings, evaluating factors contributing to the identified concern, developing an agreeable plan, and evaluating the childās progress toward goals. ā¢ Traditional approaches to CBC emphasize a problem-solving orientation, aimed largely at addressing problems experienced by individual children
Near-field iron and carbon chemistry of non-buoyant hydrothermal plume particles, Southern East Pacific Rise 15Ā°S

from the atmosphere and surface ocean. Over the past few decades, research has focused on
constraining the global Fe cycle and its impacts on the global C cycle. Hydrothermal vents have
become a highly debated potential source of Fe to the surface ocean. Two main mechanisms for
transport of Fe over long distances have been proposed: Fe-bearing nanoparticles and organic C
complexation with Fe in the dissolved (dFe) and particulate (pFe) pools. However, the ubiquity
and importance of these processes is unknown at present, and very few vents have been
investigated for Fe-Corg interactions or the transport of such materials away from the vent. Here
we describe the near-field contributions (first ~100 km from ridge) of pFe and Corg to the
Southern East Pacific Rise (SEPR) plume, one of the largest known hydrothermal plume features
in the global ocean. Plume particles (> 0.2 Ī¼m) were collected as part of the U.S. GEOTRACES
Eastern Pacific Zonal Transect cruise (GP16) by in-situ filtration. Sediment cores were also
collected to investigate the properties of settling particles. In this study, X-ray absorption near
edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy was used in two complementary X-ray synchrotron
approaches, scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) and X-ray microprobe, to
investigate the Fe and C speciation of particles within the near-field non-buoyant SEPR plume.
When used in concert, STXM and X-ray microprobe provide fine-scale and representative
information on particle morphology, elemental co-location, and chemical speciation. Bulk
chemistry depth profiles for particulate Corg (POC), particulate manganese (pMn), and pFe
indicated that the source of these materials to the non-buoyant plume is hydrothermal in origin.
The plume particles at stations within the first ~100 km down-stream of the ridge were
composites of mineral (oxidized Fe) and biological materials (organic C, Corg). Iron chemistry
in the plume and in the core-top suspended sediment fluff layer were both dominated by Fe(III)
phases, such as Fe(III) oxyhydroxides and Fe(III) phyllosilicates. Particulate sulfur (pS) was a
rare component of our plume and sediment samples. When pS was detected, it was in the form of
an Fe sulfide mineral phase, composing ā¤ 0.4% of the Fe on a per atom basis. The resuspended
sediment fluff layer contained a mixture of inorganic (coccolith fragments) and Corg bearing
(lipid-rich biofilm-like) materials. The particle morphology and co-location of C and Fe in the
sediment was different from that in plume particles. This indicates that if the Fe-Corg composite
particles settle rapidly to the sediments, then they experience strong alteration during settling and/or within the sediments. Overall, our observations indicate that the particles within the first ~
100 km of the laterally advected plume are S-depleted, Fe(III)-Corg composites indicative of a
chemically oxidizing plume with strong biological modification. These findings confirm that the
Fe-Corg relationships observed for non-buoyant plume particles within ~ 100 m of the vent site
are representative of particles within this region of the non-buoyant plume (~100 km). These
findings also point to dynamic alteration of Fe-Corg bearing particles during transport and
settling. The specific biogeochemical processes at play, and the implications for nutrient cycling
in the ocean are currently unknown and represent an area of future investigation
The Use of a Visual Motor Test to Identify Lingering Deficits in Concussed Collegiate Athletes
Background: Emerging evidence suggests neurophysiological deficits, such as visual motor coordination (VMC), may persist beyond clinical concussion recovery. Instrumented measurement of upper-limb VMC is critical for neurological evaluation post-concussion and may identify persistent deficits further elucidating persistent neurophysiological impairments not detected by the current clinical assessment battery. Aim: The aim of the study was to determine if a VMC test identifies persistent deficits in concussed collegiate student-athletes who have returned to baseline on clinical concussion assessments. Methods: Thirteen recently concussed intercollegiate student-athletes (male: 7, 18.9Ā±0.7 years, 175.5Ā±12.4 cm, 75.5Ā±23.2 kg), and 13 matched control student-athletes (male: 7, 19.3Ā±1.1 years, 173.5Ā±11.9 cm, 75.8Ā±19.9 kg) completed two testing sessions (T1: \u3c48 h after clinical recovery; T2: 30 days post-concussion) on a visual motor exam. The outcome measures were A* Average score (average number of lights hit on A* exam), simple visual reaction time (SVRT)-RT, and movement time (SVRT-MT) on the Dynavision D2. The dependent variables were compared with a 2 (group) Ć 2 (time) repeated measures ANOVAs. Results: There was no group interaction in A* average score (F(1,24)=0.036, P=0.849), SVRT-RT (F(1,22)=0.319, P=0.575), and SVRT-MT (F(1,22)=1.179, P=0.188). There was a main effect for time on A* average score (T1: 76.3Ā±10.4 hits; T2: 82.7Ā±11.2 hits; F(1,24)=38.1, Pā¤0.001) and SVRT-RT (T1: 0.31Ā±0.04; T2: 0.29Ā±0.04 s; F(1,22)=4.9, P=0.039). There was no main effect for SVRT-MT. There were no group differences at either time point. Conclusions: Among recently concussed collegiate student-athletes, no persistent deficits were identified in VMC beyond clinical recovery when assessed by Dynavision D2. This VMC exam may not provide a useful means of tracking recovery following concussion likely due to a substantial practice effect. Relevance for patients: While post-concussion neurophysiological deficits persist beyond clinical recovery, the laboratory based VMC assessment herein did not identify deficits at critical post-concussion time points. Therefore, other clinically translatable VMC assessments should be further investigated
Obesity Is Not Associated with Antimicrobial Treatment Failure for Intra-Abdominal Infection
Background: Obesity and commonly associated comorbidities are known risk factors for the development of infections. However, the intensity and duration of antimicrobial treatment are rarely conditioned on body mass index (BMI). In particular, the influence of obesity on failure of antimicrobial treatment for intra-abdominal infection (IAI) remains unknown. We hypothesized that obesity is associated with recurrent infectious complications in patients treated for IAI. Methods: Five hundred eighteen patients randomized to treatment in the Surgical Infection Society Study to Optimize Peritoneal Infection Therapy (STOP-IT) trial were evaluated. Patients were stratified by obese (BMI ā„30) versus non-obese (BMIā„30) status. Descriptive comparisons were performed using Chi-square test, Fisher exact test, or Wilcoxon rank-sum tests as appropriate. Multivariable logistic regression using a priori selected variables was performed to assess the independent association between obesity and treatment failure in patients with IAI. Results: Overall, 198 (38.3%) of patients were obese (BMI ā„30) versus 319 (61.7%) who were non-obese. Mean antibiotic d and total hospital d were similar between both groups. Unadjusted outcomes of surgical site infection (9.1% vs. 6.9%, p?=?0.36), recurrent intra-abdominal infection (16.2% vs. 13.8, p?=?0.46), death (1.0% vs. 0.9%, p?=?1.0), and a composite of all complications (25.3% vs. 19.8%, p?=?0.14) were also similar between both groups. After controlling for appropriate demographics, comorbidities, severity of illness, treatment group, and duration of antimicrobial therapy, obesity was not independently associated with treatment failure (c-statistic: 0.64). Conclusions: Obesity is not associated with antimicrobial treatment failure among patients with IAI. Nebraska Agricultural Water Management Demonstration Network (NAWMDN): Integrating Research and Extension/Outreach
Maximizing the net benefits of irrigated plant production through appropriately designed agricultural water management programs is of growing importance in Nebraska, and other western and Midwestern states, because many areas are involved in management and policy changes to conserve irrigation water. In Nebraska, farmers are being challenged to practice conservation methods and use water resources more efficiently while meeting plant water requirements and maintaining high yields. Another challenge Nebraska experiences in it\u27s approximately 3.5āmillionāha irrigated lands is limited adoption of newer technologies/tools to help farmers better manage irrigation, conserve water and energy, and increase plant water use efficiency. In 2005, the Nebraska Agricultural Water Management Demonstration Network (NAWMDN or Network) was formed from an interdisciplinary team of partners including the Natural Resources Districts (NRD); USDAāNRCS; farmers from south central, northeast, west central, and western Nebraska; crop consultants; and University of NebraskaāLincoln faculty. The main goal of the Network is to enable the transfer of high quality researchābased information to Nebraskans through a series of demonstration projects established in farmers\u27 fields and implement newer tools and technologies to address and enhance plant water use efficiency, water conservation, and reduce energy consumption for irrigation. The demonstration projects are supported by the scientificallyābased field research and evaluation projects conducted at the University of NebraskaāLincoln, South Central Agricultural Laboratory located near Clay Center, Nebraska. The Network was formed with only 15 farmers as collaborators in only one of the 23 NRDs in 2005. As of late 2009, the number of active collaborators has increased to over 300 in 12 NRDs and 35 of 93 counties. The Network is impacting both water and energy conservation due to farmers adopting information and newer technologies for irrigation management. The NAWMDN is helping participants to improve irrigation management and efficiency by monitoring plant growth stages and development, soil moisture, and crop evapotranspiration. As a result, they are reducing irrigation water application amounts and associated energy savings is leading to greater profitability to participating farmers. This article describes the goals and objectives of the Network, technical and educational components, operational functions, and procedures used in the NAWMDN.
