ISICSoo: a class for the calculation of ionization cross sections from ECPSSR and PWBA theory
ISICS, originally a C language program for calculating K-, L- and M-shell
ionization and X-ray production cross sections from ECPSSR and PWBA theory, has
been reengineered into a C++ language class, named ISICSoo. The new software
design enables the use of ISICS functionality in other software systems. The
code, originally developed for Microsoft Windows operating systems, has been
ported to Linux and Mac OS platforms to facilitate its use in a wider
scientific environment. The reengineered software also includes some fixes to
the original implementation, which ensure more robust computational results and
a review of some physics parameters used in the computation. The paper
describes the software design and the modifications to the implementation with
respect to the previous version; it also documents the test process and

Socioeconomic factors that affect artisanal fishers’ readiness to exit a declining fishery
The emerging world crisis created by declining fish stocks poses a challenge to resource users and managers. The problem is particularly acute in poor nations, such as those in East Africa, where fishing is an important subsistence activity but high fishing intensity and use of destructive gear have resulted in declining catches. In this context developing effective management strategies requires an understanding of how fishers may respond to declines in catch. We examined the readiness of 141 Kenyan fishers to stop fishing under hypothetical scenarios of declines in catch and how socioeconomic conditions influenced their decisions. As expected, the proportion of fishers that would exit the fishery increased with magnitude of decline in catch. Fishers were more likely to say they would stop fishing if they were from households that had a higher material style of life and a greater number of occupations. Variables such as capital investment in the fishery and the proportion of catch sold had weak, nonsignificant relationships. Our finding that fishers from poorer households would be less likely to exit a severely declining fishery is consistent with the literature on poverty traps, which suggests the poor are unable to mobilize the necessary resources to overcome either shocks or chronic low-income situations and consequently may remain in poverty. that wealth generation and employment opportunities directed at the poorest fishers may help reduce fishing effort on overexploited fisheries, but successful interventions such as these will require an understanding of the socioeconomic context in which fishers operate. \u

Socioeconomic inequalities in molecular risk for chronic diseases observed in young adulthood
Many common chronic diseases of aging are negatively associated with socioeconomic status (SES). This study examines whether inequalities can already be observed in the molecular underpinnings of such diseases in the 30s, before many of them become prevalent. Data come from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health), a large, nationally representative sample of US subjects who were followed for over two decades beginning in adolescence. We now have transcriptomic data (mRNA-seq) from a random subset of 4,543 of these young adults. SES in the household-of-origin and in young adulthood were examined as covariates of
a priori
-defined mRNA-based disease signatures and of specific gene transcripts identified
de novo
. An SES composite from young adulthood predicted many disease signatures, as did income and subjective status. Analyses highlighted SES-based inequalities in immune, inflammatory, ribosomal, and metabolic pathways, several of which play central roles in senescence. Many genes are also involved in transcription, translation, and diverse signaling mechanisms. Average causal-mediated effect models suggest that body mass index plays a key role in accounting for these relationships. Overall, the results reveal inequalities in molecular risk factors for chronic diseases often decades before diagnoses and suggest future directions for social signal transduction models that trace how social circumstances regulate the human genome
Elemental energy spectra of cosmic rays measured by CREAM-II
We present new measurements of the energy spectra of cosmic-ray (CR) nuclei
from the second flight of the balloon-borne experiment CREAM (Cosmic Ray
Energetics And Mass). The instrument (CREAM-II) was comprised of detectors
based on different techniques (Cherenkov light, specific ionization in
scintillators and silicon sensors) to provide a redundant charge identification
and a thin ionization calorimeter capable of measuring the energy of cosmic
rays up to several hundreds of TeV. The data analysis is described and the
individual energy spectra of C, O, Ne, Mg, Si and Fe are reported up to ~ 10^14
eV. The spectral shape looks nearly the same for all the primary elements and
can be expressed as a power law in energy E^{-2.66+/-0.04}. The nitrogen

During its second Antarctic flight, the CREAM (Cosmic Ray Energetics And
Mass) balloon experiment collected data for 28 days, measuring the charge and
the energy of cosmic rays (CR) with a redundant system of particle
identification and an imaging thin ionization calorimeter. Preliminary direct
measurements of the absolute intensities of individual CR nuclei are reported

First trimester elevation in circulating endothelin-1 and arterial stiffness are predictive of late pregnancy preeclampsia
Preeclampsia (PE) is characterized by late pregnancy hypertension and proteinuria. PE causes significant morbidity for the maternal-fetal unit. Circulating endothelin-1 (ET-1), a potent vasoconstrictor, is elevated at the time of diagnosis of human PE. In addition, women with PE demonstrate arterial stiffness as early as the end of the first trimester. However, it is unknown if arterial stiffness is associated with a first trimester elevation in ET-1 and post-delivery placental ET-1. We hypothesized that 1) first trimester plasma ET-1 is elevated and is associated with arterial stiffness in women who develop PE; 2) first trimester ET-1 is predictive of PE; and 3) placental ET-1 is increased in PE.
