    Entrainment coefficient and effective mass for conduction neutrons in neutron star crust: II Macroscopic treatment

    Phenomena such as pulsar frequency glitches are believed to be attributable to differential rotation of a current of ``free'' superfluid neutrons at densities above the ``drip'' threshold in the ionic crust of a neutron star. Such relative flow is shown to be locally describable by adaption of a canonical two fluid treatment that emphasizes the role of the momentum covectors constructed by differentiation of action with respect to the currents, with allowance for stratification whereby the ionic number current may be conserved even when the ionic charge number Z is altered by beta processes. It is demonstrated that the gauge freedom to make different choices of the chemical basis determining which neutrons are counted as ``free'' does not affect their ``superfluid'' momentum covector, which must locally have the form of a gradient (though it does affect the ``normal'' momentum covector characterising the protons and those neutrons that are considered to be ``confined'' in the nuclei). It is shown how the effect of ``entrainment'' (whereby the momentum directions deviate from those of the currents) is controlled by the (gauge independent) mobility coefficient K, estimated in recent microscopical quantum mechanical investigations, which suggest that the corresponding (gauge dependent) ``effective mass'' m* of the free neutrons can become very large in some layers. The relation between this treatment of the crust layers and related work (using different definitions of ``effective mass'') intended for the deeper core layers is discussed.Comment: 21 pages Latex.     Linearized self-forces for branes

    We compute the regularized force density and renormalized action due to fields of external origin coupled to a brane of arbitrary dimension in a spacetime of any dimension. Specifically, we consider forces generated by gravitational, dilatonic and generalized antisymmetric form-fields. The force density is regularized using a recently developed gradient operator. For the case of a Nambu--Goto brane, we show that the regularization leads to a renormalization of the tension, which is seen to be the same in both approaches. We discuss the specific couplings which lead to cancellation of the self-force in this case.Comment: 15 page

    Corporate social responsibility performance and outsourcing: The case of the Bangladesh tragedy

    Multinational firms frequently outsource the manufacturing of their products to factories in less- developed countries to take advantage of much lower labor costs. A tragic disaster occurred in Bangladesh in April 2013 when a clothing factory building collapsed, killing more than a thousand workers. Subsequently, textile companies in the U.S. and in Europe who outsource their manufacturing in Bangladesh had to decide whether to commit to better working conditions by signing one of two worker safety agreements (WSAs) born in the after-math of the tragedy. Although many firms signed one of these agreements, many more did not. This study explores the relationship between an actual corporate social responsibility (CSR) commitment and firm performance, using a sample of companies who signed one of the WSAs after the Bangladesh disaster and those who did not. The results suggest that the decision to sign is positively associated with social visibility, prior CSR performance, and impact in stock price after the tragedy. Regarding subsequent performance, investors favorably responded to the news of firms’ signing on to the WSA agreement

    Placental expression of pituitary hormones is an ancestral feature of therian mammals

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The placenta is essential for supplying nutrients and gases to the developing mammalian young before birth. While all mammals have a functional placenta, only in therian mammals (marsupials and eutherians) does the placenta closely appose or invade the uterine endometrium. The eutherian placenta secretes hormones that are structurally and functionally similar to pituitary growth hormone (GH), prolactin (PRL) and luteinizing hormone (LH). Marsupial and eutherian mammals diverged from a common ancestor approximately 125 to 148 million years ago and developed distinct reproductive strategies. As in eutherians, marsupials rely on a short-lived but functional placenta for embryogenesis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We characterized pituitary GH, GH-R, IGF-2, PRL and LHβ in a macropodid marsupial, the tammar wallaby, <it>Macropus eugenii</it>. These genes were expressed in the tammar placenta during the last third of gestation when most fetal growth occurs and active organogenesis is initiated. The mRNA of key growth genes GH, GH-R, IGF-2 and PRL were expressed during late pregnancy. We found significant up-regulation of GH, GH-R and IGF-2 after the start of the rapid growth phase of organogenesis which suggests that the placental growth hormones regulate the rapid phase of fetal growth.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This is the first demonstration of the existence of pituitary hormones in the marsupial placenta. Placental expression of these pituitary hormones has clearly been conserved in marsupials as in eutherian mammals, suggesting an ancestral origin of the evolution of placental expression and a critical function of these hormones in growth and development of all therian mammals.</p

    Second year technical report on-board processing for future satellite communications systems

    Advanced baseband and microwave switching techniques for large domestic communications satellites operating in the 30/20 GHz frequency bands are discussed. The nominal baseband processor throughput is one million packets per second (1.6 Gb/s) from one thousand T1 carrier rate customer premises terminals. A frequency reuse factor of sixteen is assumed by using 16 spot antenna beams with the same 100 MHz bandwidth per beam and a modulation with a one b/s per Hz bandwidth efficiency. Eight of the beams are fixed on major metropolitan areas and eight are scanning beams which periodically cover the remainder of the U.S. under dynamic control. User signals are regenerated (demodulated/remodulated) and message packages are reformatted on board. Frequency division multiple access and time division multiplex are employed on the uplinks and downlinks, respectively, for terminals within the coverage area and dwell interval of a scanning beam. Link establishment and packet routing protocols are defined. Also described is a detailed design of a separate 100 x 100 microwave switch capable of handling nonregenerated signals occupying the remaining 2.4 GHz bandwidth with 60 dB of isolation, at an estimated weight and power consumption of approximately 400 kg and 100 W, respectively

    Renormalisation of gravitational self interaction for wiggly strings

    It is shown that for any elastic string model with energy density UU and tension TT, the divergent contribution from gravitational self interaction can be allowed for by an action renormalisation proportional to (U−T)2(U-T)^2. This formula is applied to the important special case of a bare model of the transonic type (characterised by a constant value of the product UTUT) that represents the macroscopically averaged effect of shortwavelength wiggles on an underlying microscopic model of the Nambu-Goto type (characterised by U=TU=T).Comment: 11 pages, Latex; original 8 page version extended to include estimates of relevant orders of magnitude.
