Use of oligosaccharides from food side streams towards sour beer production
This master's thesis explores the potential of Raffinose family oligosaccharides (RFO) from food side streams as an adjunct in sour beer production. The study investigates the effects of RFO on mixed fermentation with different bacterial strains and their enzymatic ability to hydrolyze oligosaccharides, the effect on yeast metabolism, and the overall flavor profile. A series of experiments were conducted using RFO enhanced wort as the base substrate, co-fermenting with various lactic acid producing bacterial strains, and yeasts. The fermentation process was monitored for sugar utilization, attenuation, organic acid production, pH, and volatile compound production. Tetrad analysis was performed to see if there was any discernable difference when adding RFOs. The study evaluated the different metabolic activities of a total of 10 bacterial strains and 4 yeasts. Their ability to metabolize RFO was assessed by monitoring their growth curves, as well as by a variety of chemical analysis techniques, at time intervals of 7, 14, and 19 days with the aim of producing sour beer within the normal time frame of traditional non-sour beer. The results suggest that the use of RFO as substrate in the production of beer is contributing beneficially towards the overall flavor and fermentation profile. It led to an increase in ethanol concentration in beer fermented with Saccharomyces cerevisiae, demonstrating that at least a proportion of the RFO extract can be fermented by brewer’s yeast. However, the impact of RFOs on mixed fermentation, including the utilization of the oligosaccharide constituents, showed mixed results. Multiple strains demonstrated the ability to ferment individual constituents of RFO, but in co-fermentations, the fermentation conditions appeared to primarily promote organic acid production, rapidly lowering the wort's pH, inducing stress to the yeast, and affecting the production of metabolites, especially aldehydes and esters. The sensory evaluation of the experimental beer fermented with RFOs displayed a discernible differentiation from the beer fermented without RFOs, without increasing unwanted off-flavor associated compounds. This demonstrates that incorporating RFOs as an adjunct in the production of sour beers has promising potential. In conclusion, the incorporation of RFOs as a substrate in sour beer fermentation holds promise, with a discernable difference in organic compounds produced, but a more comprehensive understanding of the process and optimization of fermentation conditions are crucial to achieving consistent and desirable outcomes, as well as to quantify the enzymatic ability to hydrolyze the constituents of RFO

Eg har derfor analysert romanen ut frå følgande problemstilling: Korleis blir melankoli framstilt i Brit Bildøens roman Sju dagar i august? For å svare på problemstillinga nyttar eg ein hermeneutisk lesemåte.
Eg lar ulik teori belyse funna mine i analysen.

Effects of Interfacial Geometry on Laser Joining of Dissimilar NiTi to Stainless Steel Wires
Joining of the dissimilar metal pair NiTi to stainless steel is of great interest for implantable biomedical applications. Formation of brittle intermetallic phases requires that the joining processes limit the amount of over-melting and mixing along the interface. Thus, laser joining is a preferred method due to its ability to precisely control heat input. This study explores a method of using a cup and cone interfacial geometry, with no filler material, to increase the tensile strength of the joint. Not only does the cup and cone geometry increase the surface area of the interface, but it also introduces a shear component, which is shown to be beneficial to tensile strength of the wire as well. The fracture strength for various cone apex angles and laser powers is determined. Compositional profiles of the interfaces are analyzed. A numerical model is used for explanation of the processing

Joining and Deformation Processes with Corrosion Resistance
Dissimilar metal joining was performed with the main goal being maximization of the strength of the joined samples, but because of some potential applications of the dissimilar joints, analyzing their corrosion behavior also becomes crucial. Starting with materials that initially have suitable corrosion resistance, ensuring that the laser processing does not diminish this property is necessary. Conversely, the laser shock peening processing was implemented with a complete focus on improving the corrosion behavior of the workpiece. Thus, many commonalities occur between these two manufacturing processes, and this thesis goes on to analyze the thermal and mechanical influence of laser processing on materials’ corrosion resistances.
Brittle intermetallic phases can form at the interfaces of dissimilar metal joints. A process called autogenous laser brazing has been explored as a method to minimize the brittle intermetallic formation and therefore increase the fracture strength of joints. In particular, joining of nickel titanium to stainless steel wires is performed with a cup/cone interfacial geometry. This geometry provides beneficial mechanical effects at the interface to increase the fracture strength and also enables high-speed rotation of the wires during irradiation, providing temperature uniformity throughout the depth of the wires. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, tensile testing, and a numerical thermal modelling are used for the analysis.
The material pair of nickel titanium and stainless steel have many applications in implantable medical devices, owing to nickel titanium’s special properties of shape memory and superelasticity. In order for an implantable medical device to be used in the body, it must be ensured that upon exposure to body fluid it does not corrode in harmful ways. The effect that laser autogenous brazing has on the biocompatibility of dissimilar joined nickel titanium to stainless steel samples is thus explored. While initially both of these materials are considered to be biocompatible on their own, the laser treatment may change much of the behavior. Thermally induced changes in the oxide layers, grain refinement, and galvanic effects all influence the biocompatibility. Nickel release rate, polarization, hemolysis, and cytotoxicity tests are used to help quantify the changes and ascertain the biocompatibility of the joints.
To directly exert a beneficial influence on materials’ corrosion properties laser shock peening (LSP) is performed, with a particular focus on the stress corrosion cracking (SCC) behavior. Resulting from the combination of an applied load on a susceptible material exposed to a corrosive environment, SCC can cause sudden material failure. Stainless steel, high strength steel, and brass are subjected to LSP and their differing corrosion responses are determined via cathodic charging, hardness, mechanical U-bend, Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy, and SEM imaging. A description accounting for the differing behavior of each material is provided as well as considerations for improving the effectiveness of the process.
SCC can occur by several different physical processes, and to fully encapsulate the ways in which LSP provides mitigation, the interaction of microstructure changes induced by LSP on SCC mechanisms is determined. Hydrogen absorbed from the corrosive environment can cause phase changes to the material. Cathodic charging and subsequent X-ray diffraction is used to analyze the phase change of sample with and without LSP processing. Lattice dislocations play an important role, and transmission electron microscopy helps to aid in the analysis. A finite element model providing spatially resolved dislocation densities from LSP processing is performed
