    Area Quantization in Quasi-Extreme Black Holes

    Jarlskog-like invariants for theories with scalars and fermions

    Within the framework of theories where both scalars and fermions are present, we develop a systematic prescription for the construction of CP-violating quantities that are invariant under basis transformations of those matter fields. In theories with Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking, the analysis involves the vevs' transformation properties under a scalar basis change, with a considerable simplification of the study of CP violation in the scalar sector. These techniques are then applied in detail to the two Higgs-doublet model with quarks. It is shown that there are new invariants involving scalar-fermion interactions, besides those already derived in previous analyses for the fermion-gauge and scalar-gauge sectors.Comment: 12 pages, Latex, no figure

    Spontaneous leptonic CP violation and nonzero θ13\theta_{13}

    We consider a simple extension of the Standard Model by adding two Higgs triplets and a complex scalar singlet to its particle content. In this framework, the CP symmetry is spontaneously broken at high energies by the complex vacuum expectation value of the scalar singlet. Such a breaking leads to leptonic CP violation at low energies. The model also exhibits an A4×Z4A_4\times Z_4 flavour symmetry which, after being spontaneously broken at a high-energy scale, yields a tribimaximal pattern in the lepton sector. We consider small perturbations around the tribimaximal vacuum alignment condition in order to generate nonzero values of θ13\theta_{13}, as required by the latest neutrino oscillation data. It is shown that the value of θ13\theta_{13} recently measured by the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment can be accommodated in our framework together with large Dirac-type CP violation. We also address the viability of leptogenesis in our model through the out-of-equilibrium decays of the Higgs triplets. In particular, the CP asymmetries in the triplet decays into two leptons are computed and it is shown that the effective leptogenesis and low-energy CP-violating phases are directly linked.Comment: 17 pages; 6 figures; references added and typos corrected.     The D0 same-charge dimuon asymmetry and possibile new CP violation sources in the Bs−BˉsB_s-\bar{B}_s system

    Recently, the D0 collaboration reported a large CP violation in the same-sign dimuon charge asymmetry which has the 3.2σ3.2 \sigma deviation from the value estimated in the Standard Model. In this paper, several new physics models are considered: the MSSM, two Higgs doublet model, the recent dodeca model, and a new Z′Z' model. Generally, it is hard to achieve such a large CP violation consistently with other experimental constraints. We find that a scheme with extra non-anomalous U(1)′' gauge symmetry is barely consistent. In general, the extra Z′Z' gauge boson induces the flavor changing neutral current interactions at tree level, which is the basic reason allowing a large new physics CP violation. To preserve the U(1)′' symmetry at high energy, SU(2)L_L singlet exotic heavy quarks of mass above 1 TeV and the Standard Model gauge singlet scalars are introduced.Comment: 12 pages, 13 figure

    Basis invariant conditions for supersymmetry in the two-Higgs-doublet model

    The minimal supersymmetric standard model involves a rather restrictive Higgs potential with two Higgs fields. Recently, the full set of classes of symmetries allowed in the most general two Higgs doublet model was identified; these classes do not include the supersymmetric limit as a particular class. Thus, a physically meaningful definition of the supersymmetric limit must involve the interaction of the Higgs sector with other sectors of the theory.     A New Approach to the Yukawa Puzzle

    We do a systematic analysis of the question of calculability of CKM matrix elements in terms of quark mass ratios, within the framework of the hypothesis of universality of strength for Yukawa couplings (USY), where all Yukawa couplings have equal moduli, and the flavor dependence is only in their phases. We use the fact that the limit mu=md=0m_u=m_d=0 is specially simple in USY, to construct the various ans\"atze. It is shown that the experimentally observed CKM matrix can be obtained within USY ans\"atze corresponding to simple relations among phases of Yukawa couplings. Within USY, one finds a natural explanation why Cabibbo mixing is significantly larger than the other CKM mixings. In the most successful of the USY ans\"atze, one obtains in leading order: ∣Vus∣=md/ms|V_{us}|=\sqrt{m_d/{m_s}} ; ∣Vcb∣=2(ms/mb) |V_{cb}|=\sqrt{2}(m_s/m_b) ∣Vub∣=(1/2)mdms/mb2 |V_{ub}|= (1/\sqrt{2})\sqrt{m_dm_s/m_b^2} ; ∣Vtd∣=3∣Vub∣|V_{td}|= 3|V_{ub}|.     Hierarchy plus anarchy in quark masses and mixings

    We introduce a new parameterisation of the effect of unknown corrections from new physics on quark and lepton mass matrices. This parameterisation is used in order to study how the hierarchies of quark masses and mixing angles are modified by random perturbations of the Yukawa matrices. We discuss several examples of flavour relations predicted by different textures, analysing how these relations are influenced by the random perturbations. We also comment on the unlikely possibility that unknown corrections contribute significantly to the hierarchy of masses and mixings.Comment: LaTeX, 18 pages, 16 PS figure

    D0−Dˉ0D^0 - \bar D^0 Mixing in the Presence of Isosinglet Quarks

    We analyse ΔC=2\Delta C=2 transitions in the framework of a minimal extension of the Standard Model where either a Q=2/3Q=2/3 or a Q=−1/3Q=-1/3 isosinglet quark is added to the standard quark spectrum. In the case of a Q=2/3Q=2/3 isosinglet quark, it is shown that there is a significant region of parameter space where D0−Dˉ0D^0 - \bar D^0 mixing is sufficiently enhanced to be observed at the next round of experiments. On the contrary, in the case of a Q=−1/3Q=-1/3 isosinglet quark, it is pointed out that obtaining a substancial enhancement of D0−Dˉ0D^0 - \bar D^0 mixing, while complying with the experimental constraints on rare kaon decays, requires a contrived choice of parameters.Comment: 10 pages plus four figures.
