    Gamma Ray Burst Host Galaxies Have `Normal' Luminosities

    The galactic environment of Gamma Ray Bursts can provide good evidence about the nature of the progenitor system, with two old arguments implying that the burst host galaxies are significantly subluminous. New data and new analysis have now reversed this picture: (A) Even though the first two known host galaxies are indeed greatly subluminous, the next eight hosts have absolute magnitudes typical for a population of field galaxies. A detailed analysis of the 16 known hosts (ten with red shifts) shows them to be consistent with a Schechter luminosity function with R∗=−21.8±1.0R^{*} = -21.8 \pm 1.0 as expected for normal galaxies. (B) Bright bursts from the Interplanetary Network are typically 18 times brighter than the faint bursts with red shifts, however the bright bursts do not have galaxies inside their error boxes to limits deeper than expected based on the luminosities for the two samples being identical. A new solution to this dilemma is that a broad burst luminosity function along with a burst number density varying as the star formation rate will require the average luminosity of the bright sample (>>6×1058ph⋅s−16 \times 10^{58} ph \cdot s^{-1} or >>1.7×1052⋅erg⋅s−11.7 \times 10^{52} \cdot erg \cdot s^{-1}) to be much greater than the average luminosity of the faint sample (∼1058ph⋅s−1\sim 10^{58} ph \cdot s^{-1} or ∼3×1051erg⋅s−1\sim 3 \times 10^{51} erg \cdot s^{-1}). This places the bright bursts at distances for which host galaxies with a normal luminosity will not violate the observed limits.     Deriving Bounds on the Size of Spatial Areas

    Many application domains such as surveillance, environmental monitoring or sensor-data processing need upper and lower bounds on areas that are covered by a certain feature. For example, a smart-city infrastructure might need bounds on the size of an area polluted with fine-dust, to re-route combustion-engine traffic. Obtaining such bounds is challenging, because in almost any real-world application, information about the region of interest is incomplete, e.g., the database of sensor data contains only a limited number of samples. Existing approaches cannot provide upper and lower bounds or depend on restrictive assumptions, e.g., the area must be convex. Our approach in turn is based on the natural assumption that it is possible to specify a minimal diameter for the feature in question. Given this assumption, we formally derive bounds on the area size, and we provide algorithms that compute these bounds from a database of sensor data, based on geometrical considerations. We evaluate our algorithms both with a real-world case study and with synthetic data

    An Analytical Study for Subsonic Oblique Wing Transport Concept

    The oblique wing concept has been investigated for subsonic transport application for a cruise Mach number of 0.95. Three different mission applications were considered and the concept analyzed against the selected mission requirements. Configuration studies determined the best area of applicability to be a commercial passenger transport mission. The critical parameter for the oblique wing concept was found to be aspect ratio which was limited to a value of 6.0 due to aeroelastic divergence. Comparison of the concept final configuration was made with fixed winged configurations designed to cruise at Mach 0.85 and 0.95. The crossover Mach number for the oblique wing concept was found to be Mach 0.91 for takeoff gross weight and direct operating cost. Benefits include reduced takeoff distance, installed thrust and mission block fuel and improved community noise characteristics. The variable geometry feature enables the final configuration to increase range by 10% at Mach 0.712 and to increase endurance by as much as 44%

    Viral RNA at two stages of reovirus infection is required for the induction of necroptosis

    Necroptosis, a regulated form of necrotic cell death, requires the activation of the RIP3 kinase. Here, we identify that infection of host cells with reovirus can result in necroptosis. We find that necroptosis requires sensing of the genomic RNA within incoming virus particles via cytoplasmic RNA sensors to produce type I interferon (IFN). While these events that occur prior to the de novo synthesis of viral RNA are required for the induction of necroptosis, they are not sufficient. The induction of necroptosis also requires late stages of reovirus infection. Specifically, efficient synthesis of double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) within infected cells is required for necroptosis. These data indicate that viral RNA interfaces with host components at two different stages of infection to induce necroptosis. This work provides new molecular details about events in the viral replication cycle that contribute to the induction of necroptosis following infection with an RNA virus. IMPORTANCE An appreciation of how cell death pathways are regulated following viral infection may reveal strategies to limit tissue destruction and prevent the onset of disease. Cell death following virus infection can occur by apoptosis or a regulated form of necrosis known as necroptosis. Apoptotic cells are typically disposed of without activating the immune system. In contrast, necroptotic cells alert the immune system, resulting in inflammation and tissue damage. While apoptosis following virus infection has been extensively investigated, how necroptosis is unleashed following virus infection is understood for only a small group of viruses. Here, using mammalian reovirus, we highlight the molecular mechanism by which infection with a dsRNA virus results in necroptosis

    Symmetry analysis of crystalline spin textures in dipolar spinor condensates

    We study periodic crystalline spin textures in spinor condensates with dipolar interactions via a systematic symmetry analysis of the low-energy effective theory. By considering symmetry operations which combine real and spin space operations, we classify symmetry groups consistent with non-trivial experimental and theoretical constraints.     Spin domain formation in spinor Bose-Einstein condensation

    The spatial structure of the spinor Bose-Einstein condensates with the spin degrees of freedom is analyzed based on the generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GP) in the light of the present spin domain experiment on m_F=\pm 1, and 0 of the hyperfine state F=1 of ^{23}Na atom gases. The GP solutions in three- and one-spatial dimensional cases reproduce the observed spin domain structures, revealing the length scale associated with the existence of the weak interaction of the spin-spin channel, other than the ordinary coherence length related to the density-density channel. The obtained domain structure in GP is compared with the result in Thomas-Fermi approximation. The former solution is found to better describe the observed features than the latter.Comment: 9 pages, 14 figure

    Air and Spray Mixture Temperature Effects on Atomization of Agricultural Sprays

    spray drift associated with agrochemical operations is highly dependent upon the physical properties of the spray solution with respect to how they influence atomization.  This study examined two spray solutions across a wide range of solution temperatures for two nozzles spraying into two high speed airstreams.  The dynamic surface tension and viscosity of the spray solutions were also measured across the range of temperatures.  Generally as the solution temperature increased, the dynamic surface tension and viscosity both decreased.  This decrease in physical properties was directly related to the decrease in spray droplet size for all nozzles and airspeeds tested.  Monitoring of spray solution temperature throughout the spray system of a typical agricultural aircraft demonstrated that while changes in the spray solutions temperature do occur, the range is much less than the ranges across which this atomization study covered.  During a typical aerial application scenario, the temperature of a spray solution and the associated physical properties and atomization characteristics would not be expected to see significant variation
