Picosecond phase-conjugate reflection from organic dye saturable absorbers
Phase conjugation with conversion efficiences of up to 50% has been obtained in DODCI and other saturable absorbers with picosecond pulses from a mode-locked dye laser. Reflectivity shows a quadratic dependence on pump intensity up to $latex \sim 500 \ MW cm-2
The Origins of Phase Transitions in Small Systems
The identification and classification of phases in small systems, e.g.
nuclei, social and financial networks, clusters, and biological systems, where
the traditional definitions of phase transitions are not applicable, is
important to obtain a deeper understanding of the phenomena observed in such
systems. Within a simple statistical model we investigate the validity and
applicability of different classification schemes for phase transtions in small
systems. We show that the whole complex temperature plane contains necessary

Health insurance is associated with decreased odds for undiagnosed prediabetes and type 2 diabetes in American adults
Over a third of adults in the United States have prediabetes, and many of those with prediabetes will progress to type 2 diabetes within 3–5 years. Health insurance status may factor into a proper diagnosis of prediabetes and diabetes. This study sought to determine the associations between health insurance and undiagnosed prediabetes and diabetes in a national sample of American adults. Publicly available data from 13,029 adults aged 18–64 years from the 2005–2016 waves of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were analyzed. Health insurance type (Medicaid, Private, Other, None) was self-reported. Prediabetes and diabetes status were assessed with measures of self-report, glycohemoglobin, fasting plasma glucose, and two-hour glucose. Covariate-adjusted logistic models were used for the analyses. Overall, 5976 (45.8%) participants had undiagnosed prediabetes, while 897 (6.8%) had undiagnosed diabetes. Having health insurance was associated with decreased odds ratios for undiagnosed prediabetes: 0.87 (95% confidence interval (CI: 0.79, 0.95)) for private insurance, 0.84 (CI: 0.73, 0.95) for other insurance, and 0.78 (CI: 0.67, 0.90) for Medicaid. Moreover, having private health insurance was associated with 0.82 (CI: 0.67, 0.99) decreased odds for undiagnosed diabetes. Health insurance coverage and screening opportunities for uninsured individuals may reduce prediabetes and diabetes misclassifications
Spatio-temporal Organization During Ventricular Fibrillation in the Human Heart
In this paper, we present a novel approach to quantify the spatio-temporal organization of electrical activation during human ventricular fibrillation (VF). We propose three different methods based on correlation analysis, graph theoretical measures and hierarchical clustering. Using the proposed approach, we quantified the level of spatio-temporal organization during three episodes of VF in ten patients, recorded using multi-electrode epicardial recordings with 30Â s coronary perfusion, 150Â s global myocardial ischaemia and 30Â s reflow. Our findings show a steady decline in spatio-temporal organization from the onset of VF with coronary perfusion. We observed transient increases in spatio-temporal organization during global myocardial ischaemia. However, the decline in spatio-temporal organization continued during reflow. Our results were consistent across all patients, and were consistent with the numbers of phase singularities. Our findings show that the complex spatio-temporal patterns can be studied using complex network analysis

Photon-axion conversion in intergalactic magnetic fields and cosmological consequences
Photon-axion conversion induced by intergalactic magnetic fields causes an
apparent dimming of distant sources, notably of cosmic standard candles such as
supernovae of type Ia (SNe Ia). We review the impact of this mechanism on the
luminosity-redshift relation of SNe Ia, on the dispersion of quasar spectra,
and on the spectrum of the cosmic microwave background. The original idea of
explaining the apparent dimming of distant SNe Ia without cosmic acceleration
is strongly constrained by these arguments. However, the cosmic equation of
state extracted from the SN Ia luminosity-redshift relation remains sensitive

Antiresonant hollow core fiber with an octave spanning bandwidth for short haul data communications
We report an effectively single mode tubular antiresonant hollow core fiber with minimum loss of ~25 dB/km at ~1200 nm, and an extremely wide low loss transmission window (lower than 30 dB/km loss from 1000 nm to 1400 nm and 6 dB bandwidth exceeding 1000 nm). Despite the relatively large mode field diameter of 32 µm, the fiber can be interfaced to SMF28 to produce fully connectorized samples. Exploiting an excellent modal purity arising from large modal differential loss and low intermodal coupling, we demonstrate penalty-free 10G on-off keying data transmission through 100m of fiber, at wavelengths of 1065, 1565 and 1963nm

Hollow core fibre technology for data transmission
We review our recent progress in developing hollow core photonic bandgap fibers for high capacity data transmission. Novel numerical and characterization tools developed to improve fiber performance and yield will be discussed
Collisional-inhomogeneity-induced generation of matter-wave dark solitons
We propose an experimentally relevant protocol for the controlled generation
of matter-wave dark solitons in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). In
particular, using direct numerical simulations, we show that by switching-on a
spatially inhomogeneous (step-like) change of the s-wave scattering length, it
is possible to generate a controllable number of dark solitons in a
quasi-one-dimensional BEC. A similar phenomenology is also found in the
two-dimensional setting of "disk-shaped" BECs but, as the solitons are subject
to the snaking instability, they decay into vortex structures. A detailed
investigation of how the parameters involved affect the emergence and evolution
