    Transport properties of nano-devices: One-dimensional model study

    A 1D model study of charge transport in nano-devices is made by comparing multi-configuration time dependent Hartree-Fock and frozen core calculations. The influence of exchange and Coulomb correlation on the tunneling current is determined. We identify the shape of the tunneling barrier and the resonance structure of the nano-device as the two dominant parameters determining the electron transport. Whereas the barrier shape determines the size of the tunneling current, the resonances determine the structure of the current.Comment: 4 page

    Disordered Carbon nanotube alloys in the Effect Medium Super Cell Approximation

    We investigate a disordered single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) in an effective medium super cell approximation (EMSCA). First type of disorder that we consider is the presence of vacancies. Our results show that the vacancies induce some bound states on their neighbor host sites, leading to the creation of a band around the Fermi energy in the SWCNT average density of states.Second type of disorder considered is a substitutional BcbNcnC1−cb−cnB_{cb}N_{cn}C_{1-cb-cn} alloy due to it's applications in hetrojunctions. We found that for a fixed boron (nitrogen) concentration, by increasing the nitrogen (boron) concentration the averaged semiconducting gap, EgE_{g}, decreases and at a critical concentration it disappears. A consequence of our results for nano electronic devices is that by changing the boron(nitrogen) concentration, one can make a semiconductor SWCNT with a pre-determined energy gap.Comment: 4 page

    Fiber-optical analogue of the event horizon

    The physics at the event horizon resembles the behavior of waves in moving media. Horizons are formed where the local speed of the medium exceeds the wave velocity. We use ultrashort pulses in microstructured optical fibers to demonstrate the formation of an artificial event horizon in optics. We observed a classical optical effect, the blue-shifting of light at a white-hole horizon. We also show by theoretical calculations that such a system is capable of probing the quantum effects of horizons, in particular Hawking radiation.Comment: MEDIA EMBARGO.     Sustainability considerations for organic electronic products.

    The development of organic electronic applications has reached a critical point. While markets, including the Internet of Things, transparent solar and flexible displays, gain momentum, organic light-emitting diode displays lead the way, with a current market size of over $25 billion, helping to create the infrastructure and ecosystem for other applications to follow. It is imperative to design built-in sustainability into the materials selection, processing and device architectures of all of these emerging applications, and to close the loop for a circular approach. In this Perspective, we evaluate the status of embedded carbon in organic electronics, as well as options for more sustainable materials and manufacturing, including engineered recycling solutions that can be applied within the product architecture and at the end of life. This emerging industry has a responsibility to ensure a 'cradle-to-cradle' approach. We highlight that ease of dismantling and recycling needs to closely relate to the product lifetime, and that regeneration should be facilitated in product design.     We present a comprehensive framework for treating the nonlinear interaction of few-cycle pulses using an envelope description that goes beyond the traditional SVEA method. This is applied to a range of simulations that demonstrate how the effect of a χ(2)\chi^{(2)} nonlinearity differs between the many-cycle and few-cycle cases. Our approach, which includes diffraction, dispersion, multiple fields, and a wide range of nonlinearities, builds upon the work of Brabec and Krausz[1] and Porras[2]. No approximations are made until the final stage when a particular problem is considered.     Organizational culture, leadership style and effectiveness: A case study of middle eastern construction clients

    During the last few decades, organizational effectiveness has received a great deal of attention in many industrial sectors. As a result, a variety of models have been formulated which measure organizational performance. In the construction industry, two factors have subsequently captured the imagination and interest of researchers and practitioners alike: the culture of the organization and the leadership style of project managers. This focus places a requirement upon construction organizations to recognize and understand their organizational culture, and equally, to clearly communicate it to their employees as part of their capitalist drive of constantly improving performance, productivity and profit. Traditional ways of conducting construction business require a sound understanding of the technical and managerial demands of executing projects, which in turn, places an increased emphasis upon the management and leadership competencies of individual project managers. The purpose of the research is to explore the relationship between organizational culture, authentic leadership style and effectiveness within the context of a case study investigation centred on Middle Eastern construction clients and their project managers. The outcomes of the investigation, which include the presentation of an explanatory model, indicate that organizational culture is directly and positively related to performance and effectiveness, while project managers' leadership style has an indirect relationship to effectiveness. A strong organizational culture is therefore deemed critical to organizational performance

    Differential regulation of gene expression pathways with dexamethasone and ACTH after early life seizures.

    Early-life seizures (ELS) are associated with persistent cognitive deficits such as ADHD and memory impairment. These co-morbidities have a dramatic negative impact on the quality of life of patients. Therapies that improve cognitive outcomes have enormous potential to improve patients\u27 quality of life. Our previous work in a rat flurothyl-induction model showed that administration of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) at time of seizure induction led to improved learning and memory in the animals despite no effect on seizure latency or duration. Administration of dexamethasone (Dex), a corticosteroid, did not have the same positive effect on learning and memory and has even been shown to exacerbate injury in a rat model of temporal lobe epilepsy. We hypothesized that ACTH exerted positive effects on cognitive outcomes through beneficial changes to gene expression and proposed that administration of ACTH at seizure induction would return gene-expression in the brain towards the normal pattern of expression in the Control animals whereas Dex would not. Twenty-six Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized into vehicle- Control, and ACTH-, Dex-, and vehicle- ELS. Rat pups were subjected to 60 flurothyl seizures from P5 to P14. After seizure induction, brains were removed and the hippocampus and PFC were dissected, RNA was extracted and sequenced, and differential expression analysis was performed using generalized estimating equations. Differential expression analysis showed that ACTH pushes gene expression in the brain back to a more normal state of expression through enrichment of pathways involved in supporting homeostatic balance and down-regulating pathways that might contribute to excitotoxic cell-damage post-ELS

    Few-cycle soliton propagation

We present theoretical results and numerical simulations for both NLS and parametric (χ(2)\chi^{(2)}) ultrashort solitons in the ``generalised few-cycle envelope approximation'' (GFEA) regime, demonstrating their altered propagation.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
